University of Nebraska-Lincoln economics professor Carlos Asarta was on the observation deck of the 1,091 foot Tokyo Tower when the 2011 earthquake and tsunami hit. He captured the reactions of people on the tour. Asarta can be seen at 1:27 in this video. Hours later, Asarta recounts the experience in this video: • Nebraska Professor Tal...

You have to love the Japanese guy's calm reaction initially, "But it's safe." Thumbs up for Japanese Engineering!

My sister has been to japan several times, and Tokyo Tower as well. We realized today how scary it must have been to be in the tower at that time. I was surprised to find this video, and very pleased to see everyone was safe.

That's my professor! So hardcore. He told us not to worry and that he'd be back on Monday to teach us more economics

I've watched several videos from this earthquake -- I'll betcha the people you can hear shrieking in terror in the background aren't Japanese. In almost every one of the videos I've seen the Japanese are calm -- scared, but calm. They are taught from a young age what to do in an earthquake, and they just do it and wait for it to be over. Japanese discipline is amazing.

Not really. If your life is in real danger you may scream as well no matter how much training you had specially on things so out of control and so powerful as this earthquake. I remember when I was in Japan back in 2016, my colleagues and I were at Tokyo municipality towers. I was feeling small seisms before going to one of the towers and my Chilean colleague (also used to earthquakes) got trapped in the elevator when a 5.6 earthquake happened and he and other Japanese people did leave it when it was safe but all of them were still so scared. I witnessed the scared Japanese people while I was in the lobby waiting for my colleagues. When 3/11 happened my Japanese boss was so worried about his family in Iwate he cried. We humans are not immune to fear

I was up there myself once, several years back. As I rode the elevator up, one of the Japanese women on it couldn't stop saying kowai kowai (scary scary). Now, being on the obs. deck during the most powerful earthquake in Japanese history - that's fucking kowai.

I have to wonder about the mentality of some people, this is not a criticism to who was filming but those people who are filming or just standing right next to the windows...I'm sure those windows are strong but this is an earthquake, your near the top of a very tall building, one guy can barely keep his balance while filming near window, you have to wonder what they are thinking, its a natural extinct to get away from windows during an earthquake, glass can break, even employees came along an told them to get away from the windows,so why would you be standing right next to them during a quake, especially at that height.
