Hi and thanks for this great DIY video. I'm just about to use it to upgrade CPU, RAM and swap HDD for SSD on a Touchsmart 600-1305t. I have a question that is only vaguely related but I figure this is the community that would have the best likelihood of knowing the answer. Since the machine is more than 10 years old, it no longer shows up on HP's support web site. Does anyone know of, or would be willing to share with me, the latest BIOS for this machine? I'm currently running "6.08 7/15/10".

Just so that others know, mine says 600-1050uk. However, if you look at 2:29, this video show 600 1000 (at the back) and that matches with mine as well. So I assume 600-1000 is the technical model and other variations (like 1050uk or 1140de ) are just commercial namings.

As I wrote in my answer to your other comment, the 820 does NOT have an integrated GPU. So if your machine does not have a GPU installed in the MXM slot, you cannot use that one, since you will have no GPU at all then.

This is something, you could try. I don't know, if it will work. You can try first just to remove the Video Card form the Slot. Maybe the motherboad will automatically switch to the GPU inside the CPU, if available. I also think, I remember, that there is a second LVDS (Display) connector on the motherboard. Maybe this could be used for the internal GPU. I think it is close to the SATA-Ports somwhere. If the display cable is long enough, you could try plugging it in there (with the dedicated video card removed).

@NebukadV5 жыл бұрын
Knowing your exact current configuration would help ;) You will never make this a fast workstation or gaming-PC as of todays standards, but here are the things you can swap (from easiest to hardest as well as from most to least effective): 1) HDD --> SSD will improve the overall reativeness and fidelity of the system vastly. 2) RAM upgrade to 8GB - that's all you'll ever need in a machine like this. 3) CPU upgrade - either to a fast dual-core ( i.e. i7-620M) or if you're really keen and have a need for high thread count a quad-core (i.e. Intel Core i7 820QM Quad Core) 4) GPU - I have not done it and dont know, what GPUs might work in this machine. It's possible, but complicated and you could end up with incompatibilities.

Do you think that I could replace the motherboard from a touchsmart 600 1100t to the motherboard in this model? I ask for two reasons 1) this model motherboard accepts cpus above intel duo cores, allowing me to use i3 and above 2) my model uses the built in gpu you mentioned in this video and I am not sure that the bios allows for the mxm1 gpu slot to be used since my model 1100t didn’t come installed with one. I know that if I do this I will also need to add a heat sink and fan for the gpu, as mine lacks those items, but in that case, as it was massed produced, the case does allow for that. Just wondering, though I know that since this is an old video I may never hear back. My model uses the pegatron e60 board and the one in this video is the e66. More details, this board is the impip m5 I believe, mine is the ipp7a m5. Just looking for your thoughts. Thanks!

Btw I got this computer for free. I have much newer and better systems, this is more of just an experiment.
@NebukadV3 жыл бұрын
Interesting idea. If found the HP support Document for the E60 board: support.hp.com/us-en/document/c01903963 If you compare this to the Document for the E66: support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02017992 They look almost identical. Same phsycial dimensions, same connectors in the same spots. The CPU socket is in a different position, so you will need the matching heat-sink. As for the GPU: I'm not sure, if the motherboard is able to switch between onboard and MXM video simply by adding or removing the MXM card. Maybe the BIOS is written in a way, that it only works one configuration for a given machine. This would have to be tested. Also make sure, your power adaptor is strong enough. With the E66 board, possible i7 processor and maybe MXM GPU, the unit will take up to 150Watts instead of the 120Watts, which the 1100t is rated for.

First things first! Thank you so much for your response. I had spent about a week researching this and found nothing online. I saw the same spec pages you posted but I was more interested in the I/o layout then I was noticing the placement of the cpu and the power requirements(obviously I’m a novice and both of those should have been red flags). At the point I posed this question I had already ordered ram and a t9900 duo core. But I had mainly had questions about adding the mxm graphics card and the heat sink and fan. After looking up the prices for all the various components required, the whole objective is a waste of time. I’m better off just buying the e66 build and replacing the cpu and ram, but the mental exercise was enjoyable and your response was the cake topper! I had been watching this video as soon as a friend of mine asked me to get all their old data off it, which I did, and they gave me the computer as payment. I just thought it would be a good kitchen computer for the family. I had some old ddr3 4gb sodimm ram laying around so I bumped it from 4gb to 6gb, I have another 4gb coming to make it max out at 8gb. I’m sure it will work fine as is, for what I want to use it for. For 2009 the screen is large and of good quality. It’s not a gaming PC but for streaming videos while I wash dishes, it should work just fine! Thanks so much again for your timely response and the quality of your answer. Please post more videos! Thanks!

@NebukadV Жыл бұрын
As you can see in my video, there is an external video card plugged into that slot. If your machine does not have one installed, I am not sure, that any card you put in there will be recognized. If you have a card installed, you can change it. The Slot is called MXM. However, every MXM card can be different in terms of size, layout (cooler-position) and power consumption. You can try putting another card in that slot, but it might just not work.

@@TheSkoto1 As for the MXM Slot I can not give you further advice, since I did not play around with that. I do not know, if the slot can be used at all, if there was no card installed from the factory, nor do I know, which cards can work in that slot. All I can tell you is, that my machine had a NVIDIA GeForce G210M installed. As for the CPU: Some CPUs come with integrated Graphics and some don't. If you don't have a dedicated card installed in the MXM slot, you need to choose a CPU with integrated graphics. For example the 820 and 720QM do not have a graphics card. Pretty sure you can swap the WiFi card. About the CPU, you'd have to try yourself and maybe let everyone know. The CPU I used was also not on the HP support list. On the other hand, the 840qm and 940qm need more power so the MoBo might have issues to power them.

@@NebukadV lagging, never leading. Also depends on how often I turn on the pc. If I leave it off for a few days, it could be as far out as a few days but if I turn on every day, the lag could be from a few minutes
@NebukadV4 жыл бұрын
@@hweilynong1424 That's actually a behaviour, that I have never encoutered before ^^ My own PC clock has always been a little bit "slow", so it laggs behind about one minute after one week. But this has nothing to do with the battery, it's just that my RTC (Real Time Clock) chip seems to be not very precise. Your case however is different. What I find strange is the fact, that depends on the PC beeing switched on or not. Usually, the RTC is powered also in standy. Meaning, as long as the AC power is attached, the RTC should be powered by that. Only if you disconnect the AC power adapter, the RTC should run off of the CMOS battery. If that is what you mean by "leave it off for a few days", than it could indeed be the CMOS battery. If on your machine, the CMOS battery is right next the the RAM slots, you could easily give it a try and just swap it out for a new one and see, if that fixes it.

There's a couple of things, I could tell you at this point: If you just want to get the OS running on the new drive as it was before, so you don't necessarily want to do a fresh install, there is another way: You could simply clone the content of the old hard drive 1:1 to the new one. I believe, there is even a Samsung-Tool, that helps you with that. If you want to proceed with a fresh install, there is some things to take care of. - USB drives are often not shown as dedicated "USB"-Drives. On a lot of older systems, they show up in the regular "Hard drives" list and then you have to select the order of harddrives accordingly. - In order to make USB drives be detected by the BIOS, they have to be formatted in a certain way before copying the installation files to them. There are a lot of tutorials and small tools out there, to get you up and running. - But it might just be the case, that this machine does not support booting from USB after all. I honestly don't remeber, if mine did. But booting from DVD should always be possible. The original Backup-Disc was also a DVD. In that case, it's just a matter of properly burning the image to the disc. I can only tell you these things, but I cannot really guide you trough the setup 1:1.

@@NebukadV thank you for your reply! When I turned on again in, I tried to check again the boot menu and the flash drive was there, in the list of bootable drivers. So I realized that the problem was the flash drive used the first time it's a USB 3.0 and maybe the BIOS can't read that: I just tried another Windows 10 USB installation, this time with a 2.0 flash drive, and it worked like a charm! Now with a SSD SamsungEVO my old hp touchsmart starts in 20 seconds and it's reborn!

@@NebukadV Can you also tell me which graphics card can be installed at most? I currently have a Geforce 3900M GS installed. Unfortunately, this is a bit too slow.
@NebukadV Жыл бұрын
@@rhein-sondler No, I cannot, since I did not concern myself with the GPU at all. However, here are some hints for your research: Try to find a GPU with the same interface ( MXM 3.0 TypeA) and similar power requirements as the one installed. For example the GeForce GT 230M would work most likely.

Is there a way to upgrade the motherboard of this?
@NebukadV4 жыл бұрын
I don't actually know, if that's possible, but I doubt it. You would have to find a board with the exact same dimensions (outlines, screw positions etc.) as well as the exact same connectors on the same positions.
@JoshCartman4 жыл бұрын
@@NebukadV so possibly, but it would require heavy modification, and maybe even 3D printing to fit in an ATX- Mini board. Doable, but beyond my skillset.
@NebukadV4 жыл бұрын
@@JoshCartman I thought, your idea was to use the motherboard form another TouchSmart machine. Using a regular mini-ATX/-ITX board presents you with a whole new set of challanges ;) Some examples: You would need a Pico-PSU or something similar to create all the needed voltages, you would need to replace nearly every connector in the machine (fan connectors, power connectors, front panel USB), since they are all non-standard and then there is the graphics. Maybe you can use the integrated GPU from your new CPU, but you would have to have a ribbon connector with an LVDS connector on it to control the build-in screen. Non regular motherboard I know of has that.

@@NebukadV I basically want to upgrade the thing. So much hardware involved and the thing looks nice, too, it's just VERY slow. The fastest CPU I saw compatible was the I7-840QM, but that doesn't support GPU like the stock one, correct? Then what do I do for GPU, is there one dedicated inside? Also, would you know if the WiFi is upgradable?

what ssd do you recommend?
@NebukadV4 жыл бұрын
Don't go for the really cheap no-name china crap. If you're a regular user, just take the cheapest brand ssd you can find (SanDisk, Crucial, etc.). If you are kind of a power-user and want some more confidence or need a certain workload, go for Samsung EVO.

@@NebukadV Is the seagate barracude 2 GB sold on amazon a decent SSD?
@NebukadV4 жыл бұрын
@@arnoldogonzalezjr8658 "2GB"? I think you meas "2TB" which is a lot, especially for a old machine like this. But if you got the money, why not^^ "Sold on amazon" - why does it matter, where it's sold? Aparat from that: I don't have experience with Seagate SSDs, but as I said in my previous reply: As long as you go for a real name brand - and Seagate certainly is - you should be fine.
@arnoldogonzalezjr86584 жыл бұрын
NebukadV thanks for the speedy reply! Sorry I was looking at ram and hard drives and got mixed up. Yes, it’s a 2TB SSD. With an upgrade in ssd, ram and cpu, is there anything else that should be replaced on this old unit to keep up with the new hardware? I have an HP 600-1050. I am very new to computer repair/rebuilding. The hard drive I was looking at is an HDD not an SSD. Does that matter?
@NebukadV4 жыл бұрын
@@arnoldogonzalezjr8658 "to keep up with the new hardware" This unit will not be as good/fast as a machine will all new parts, that's just not gonna happen. It will just be a lot faster than it might be now. Nope, there is nothing else that I would replace. HDD vs. SSD: It does not matter so much for the upgrade process, but it makes a big or even huge difference in the outcome. I would suggest to just google "HDD vs. SSD" or watch the next best video you can find on youtube ...
