@@S-ACV It does, subtly. All craft in Nebulous have always had a 'max speed', and all craft have more thrust in back than laterally, and the interceptor just has an extreme version of that coupled with an AI that Does Not Stop for anything.

It might be worth giving Skiffs an Electronic warfare loadout that could say Jam enemy missiles or provide limited counter inteligence/stealth for friendly wings Would definately make Carriers and "planes" a more juicy prospect for both sides to engage and use as opposed to just being a screening and scouting tool

not quite AWACS, IRL ship born helos can have a radar but it's mostly for over the horizon ship detection rather than long range aircraft detection

Getting technical, AWACS is a specific AEW&C system and seeing how the Skiff is described and how Neb is an RTS, I feel simply AEW is a better description.

Honestly, if there's anything to be learned from modern trends super-generalist multirole aerospace fighters are probably exactly what the Alliance Navy needs for its role anyway. Especially considering the current situation in the lore where they're acting as more of an expeditionary force: having a hangar full of dedicated space superiority fighters might help securing the orbitals, but not so much once you need to transition into groundside operations (be they peacekeeping or "pacification" of local holdouts). I _do_ like the look of the OSP's dedicated spacefighters though, very much looking the part of the "rugged utilitarian warmachine". They manage to look outdated but still dangerous.

Look closer, those are triple ejectors. Plus two internal S1s or one internal S2. External S2s may also be a thing for the interceptors, but I'd expect those to be only one per pylon.

Yeah. My guess it came about when the Alliance Navy standardised all of its ships, they wanted to reduce the amount of individual models/classes of ships and aircraft/strikecraft so they made most of their small craft spaceplanes (or multi domain)

@@basedeltazero714If we want a real physics answer as well as the multi domain answer, having wings provides more “leverage” for the RCS. Small thruster that can exert a large roll force.

Hey Mazer, on that unity ML training for the fighters; perhaps grab snapshots of the model as it learns. This could give you gradation to the pilot skill levels. A greenhorn has an almost 0 ML snapshot, where as an ace pilot might use the "finished product" of 1000s of ML hours.

Being able to spend points on better pilots or drop some off to get a slightly better loadout for the craft would be amazing. I can definitely see that being used to great effect with the skiff which shouldn’t be getting into dogfights anyway.

mixed pilot skill lvl, like in irl you dont always want 4 elite pilots in a flight. Maybe 1 max skill lvl, 2 med skill lvl, and 1 low skill lvl ,you make the lowest be your dedicated bomber with just torps on and let the other fly escort

Imagine taking it further and pilots become aware about 1 circle (radius) & 2 circle (rate) fights as part of the "ballet" . Maybe there's some energy fighting aspects as well, so as pilots get more experience, they better understand when keeping inertia and speed matters more (like shown with making larger radius turns to keep tempo and avoid jousting) versus when it's better to trading it in ("energy") for leading high angle of attack shots or a very tight turn (lots of RCS used), or maybe doing the ultimate energy reverse by flipping the ship over (180), shooting while still having inertia, boosting to go back the way it came (like Homeworld 1). Maybe "elite" pilots, also know about notching against long distance radar missiles. Either way, what's already shown is way beyond cool already, and leagues ahead of many other games.

I like the enable/disable weapon thing and the "autonomous" control. It represents a more hands-off approach of letting a pilot figure out how best to accomplish the mission within the parameters you've set.

This update looks awesome!!! A couple ideas/suggestions: -Second the idea someone offered of having a strike craft type with more anti-ship capabilities -It would be cool if the fighters had little particle effects for the RCS jets when turning or maneuvering -Just a minor thing... it would be cool if the fighter landings look like the way ships dock with the ISS, where they translate until they're aligned with the docking point first, then move directly towards it.

It would be cool to have hangars available to the carrier hulls that aren't landing pads. Something like the hangar decks on the CIS Providence ships from Star Wars. Those would allow a much faster sortie rate since spacecraft can use one side to land and the other to launch without waiting for elevators. Since there aren't any shields to hold in the atmosphere on the deck like in Star Wars, the hangars could have two states: A pressurized state where the blast doors are closed with the deck pressurized and a depressurized state with the blast doors open. While the blast doors are open, spacecraft can land and launch quickly and possibly with multiple "lanes", but the flight technicians will be slow to refuel/rearm/repair the spacecraft since they have to work in cumbersome space suits and the spacecraft + technicians will be exposed to incoming fire! While the blast doors are closed, the craft and crew will be protected by the carrier's armor and the technicians can work more quickly. This would lead to two main sortie strategies: one where you leave the blast doors open and have a continuous stream of craft coming and going or a more micro-heavy strategy of constantly cycling the hangar and launching larger strike packages in bursts. One of the variables to tweak for balance would be how fast the atmosphere can be cycled. P.S. leaving your hangar deck open would probably leave the carrier vulnerable to boarding, if/when that gets added to the game.

Oh hell yeah between having AWACS, EW and Strike craft I can see this becoming a very engaging mechanic, as well as them being able to intercept missiles. The idea of AWACS as well is amazing as games rarely being that type of capability depicted so using them in conjunction with the interceptors will hopefully give them a much easier time keeping tabs on the enemy.

Honestly I was more interested in Carriers than Conquest originally, while I eventually started to get excited for conquest and was a bit disappointed on its cancellation, I am still genuinely more interested in carriers. The fact that combat is currently all gun and missile fighting has helped drive some of the weirdness in how Alliance and OSP play compared to each other in my opinion and this could potentially make them feel how they’re supposed to feel. Also, with what my dad's told me about projects like the Fast Attack Vehicle those procurement nightmares where everybody wants something to do everything isn't a uniquely naval problem.

I love the space f-35s, it would be cool to see a stealth/speed/maneuverability engine choice for them. It would let you fit your craft into defined attack/interceptor/fighter roles without having to make a whole new model for a craft.

I'm really interested to see how this turns out. I've got a few ideas for this but I have no idea how well they would work out since i have very limited game design knowledge. You mentioned two types of craft in the video, those being a type of "utility craft" and some kind of "interceptor craft", but I feel like it could make the game more interesting if there were three types. Allow me to explain. These three types would include: - Utility craft: basically just the skiffs you mentioned in the video - Strike craft: a version of the fighter more oriented towards attack runs on larger ships. These would be able to be equipped with fewer weapons, but these weapons would be larger - potentially cannons and torpedoes - than those that the third type could equip. These would also be much larger, slower, and less maneuverable than the third type. - Interceptor craft: These craft would be much smaller than strike craft and be specifically designed to destroy other strike craft. They would be much smaller and more maneuverable than strike craft. They would also be able to carry more weapons than strike craft, however these weapons would be limited to much smaller types like size 1 missiles and point defense style weapons. These weapons would be almost completely ineffective against larger ships and as such interceptors would be limited to a much more defensive role. This would make the player choose between superior defense against small craft provided by interceptors, the tactical advantages provided by utility craft, and the offensive capabilities of strike craft, leading to a lot more strategy involved in building their fleets. It would also make it so that a lot more thought would have to be put into where and when strike craft were used, as enough interceptors on the enemy side could lead to total air(???) superiority. Once again, this is all coming from someone with very limited game design knowledge. These are just suggestions from an unenlightened member of the masses. That being said, feel free to use or tweak any of this in any way that you deem appropriate. Keep up the good work!

In a similar manner to corvette vs shuttle, frigate vs tug, and battleship vs lineship, AN craft can be called Planes because they can go into atmosphere while OSP craft can be called Boats because they're mini spaceships. Also torpedo bombers you say? I wonder if they'll make torpedo corvettes obsolete.

Have the wing mounts increase RCS that is a noted problem with the F-35: in order to carry wing mounted weaponry it has to basically give up stealth from what i heard. It also opens up a bevy of fun options: stealth craft that load quicker, are harder to see, but don't hit as hard, or the heavier hitting, but easier seen full load craft almost bombers. It might be nice to have a UI reference for when you're increasing rcs in the design phase of the load-outs

Just wanted to ask, on the ANS main attack craft, do the exhaust nozzles move? I see they have an F-22 like thrust vector nozzle but was hard to see if they move as well. Would be cool if they move! Small detail of course. Also, will craft pilots gain experience from each fight and be slightly "better" by the time the end of the match comes? Will any of the crew stuff from previous dev log still appear, even if not as detailed? Anyway, loving all of this!

If I'm being honest, I think 'fighter jet' is a really efficient shape for armaments and operations.(Exception being tail fins and winglets.) And sure, we could just go sphere or box, but now you're limited in design and if you ask me thats a bigger target. Terrible compromise versus the portability of flattened shapes. All in all, very excited for this update. Inspiring work.

Carriers are looking good! Tho I must admit, I am a little bit confused about the need to make carrier hulls for the OSP. I thought that part of the initial design for the Moorline Line Ship hull was as a dual cargo container / strike carrier?

One thing I really want to see from this before I get too excited, is I'd like to see a bomber that's capable of carrying missiles of a size that are a threat to larger ships. Think the Avenger or the Dauntless of WWII or the F/18 of today. As a bonus, I also wonder about what the place of a Jammer aircraft like the Growler configuration could be in this game. As a retired Navy officer, sure you have a better appreciation than I do about how carriers and their variable strike packages changed modern warfare, and I'd love to see that reflected here.

I wasn't sold on the space F35's at first, but I really like the explanation of them being a jack of all trade's kind of craft for atmosphere and space. I think it's a great explanation for why the newest alliance tech isn't mopping the floor with the OSPs older stuff.

Very solid-looking design, you've definitely caught my interest. I'm not particularly familiar with your game, but I have a few off-the-cuff thoughts that you might find useful: -Limited flights makes sense, but rather than just having a static cap at all times, a more nuanced option could be to have it be based on the ships deployed. A given hull could have a default number of flights it can support (0 for most, more for carriers and perhaps command-specialised ships), as well as a limit to how many additional flights it could gain from modular components (probably just 1 in most cases). You could also have the hull apply a limit to the number of craft per flight in addition to the model of craft (also increasable to some limit by modifying the design), so that even if both sides have the same number of flights and craft available dedicated carrier hulls would still generally have an advantage by merit of being able to have more stuff active at once. -Manually loading a loadout (or switching loadouts) without it being strictly tied to the launch process strikes me as a good option to include, as it still requires the same time investment and introduces an interesting risk-reward element - it could allow for a fast launch while keeping the craft safe and fully fueled/powered (assuming that's even a thing) if you have the correct equipment prepped, but would slow you down significantly if you need to even partially switch loadouts first. I'm assuming that the time to switch from loadout A to loadout B is based on the time required to remove everything in A that is not in B, then the time to add everything in B that is not in A, by the way. -You said you wanted fighter combat to be more missile-focused, but to the best of my observation most if not all of the kills in the video were delivered by guns, even if the target had taken an earlier missile hit. I'm not sure if this is a problem per se, but it does highlight an important balance consideration: If missiles aren't effective enough then the combat becomes gun-focused by default, but if they're too effective you run the risk of making dogfights a bit on the boring side, as they would likely boil down to "whichever side gets the first shot off and/or has the most fighters will probably win, with significant losses if their enemy gets a good chance to return fire." I don't exactly have a solution to offer, but I do think it's a good example of where the "realistic" option isn't necessarily the fun one, and you might want to temper your design goals accordingly. On the other hand, the addition of greater craft variety (bombers, for example, or just more types of fighters) may add enough tactical depth to smooth things over, and you could potentially spice it up by tweaking the balance in another area - some sort of quantity versus quality factor, perhaps. Will you be able to set your point defense to prioritize spacecraft/ will they be an option like size 1, 2, and 3 for PD missiles in the missile designer? Will there be larger spacecraft sizes that can carry more missiles (F-15EX style)? I have so many questions and I'm so excited for this update!!

I seem to recall you said you stopped developing the campaign and if this is the result, well seems like a good decision. That said once you get all the amazing skirmish mode stuff done, hopefully doing the campaign mode will come back online and with hella cool, complex, and complete space warfare and naval architecture systems. Glad I got in on this early even if the Academy is kicking my space ass. :)

Yeah, this game is hella dope and even if I wash out of the Academy, I’ll still love watching the footage and getting the Dev Reports. Awesome game, amazing work, you and your team are doing great work. Keep it up!

Do you think this would lead into some new size 1 missile chassis or new capabilities? Say for example ship size 1 missiles being able to be dual or quadpacked into a standard size 2 VLS cell like the IRL ESSM. I feel like that could allow further specialization in fleets and the creation of fleet air defense builds. Overall I love the direction the game is taking

What I'm excited about with carriers is that they'll bring an entirely new dimension to area defense. Currently, it's basically a box you tick to be fairly safe from missiles. With strike craft, being able to establish a large A2/AD bubble will become very valuable. Finally I can justify all of those defensive missiles and Sarissas lol. On that note, do you plan on adding new PD options with the update?

Fun design pick with the difference in design and make a lot of sense. Your mention of "comitee ASF " vs "actually for space" made me think of a less "usual" type of fighter in fiction: the Imperial Valkyrie ( Walküre) in LotGH. Its in three sections, an engine + pilot in the middle with a pair of large laser cannon on either side that can pivot somewhat freely to engage targets that the fighter doesn't have to move toward.

I'm still a bit salty over conquest mode but this helps. I imagine the skiff will indeed see a lot of play, though it's not *immediately* obviously superior to a barebones scout corvette. Would have liked to see smallcraft vs ship combat, imagine that's coming soon. The machine learning sounds... ambitious, but potentially cool. Also potentially a huge resource hog?

After watching this for the 5th time, I agree with some others, hopefully the ANS craft has some RCS thrusters, especially when it "kicks off" from the launch pad or when doing yawing or rotation movements or trying to go against their inertia. It does look a bit odd by just having rear thrusters with some of the movements; it doesn't "sell" the movement visually as much. For dual engine craft, having one off or one boosting more (bigger flame) while doing a pivoting yaw, would look good too. EDIT: saw the RCS holes on the close up of the model weapons part in the video 👍

I don't know if you can still do it but my favorite thing to do used to be to have missile ships go up on the flanks with cruise missiles that had the armor piercer head that did more damage the faster it was going and use them in combo with ewar ships to blind them to the missiles until they were too close to counter

Looks great so far. The mechanics should integrate reasonably well and I like the drawbacks of the different types with directional radar and all that. Why not call them Strik Craft? Rolls well off the tongue and sounds so much better than planes. I really like the hangar animation and the design of the crafts. The lore explanation for aerodynamic chassis seems fine for ANS and I love the classic homeworld vibes on the OSP recon craft. The variety seems nice. Some constructive criticism (aka nitpicking). I'm not a big fan of the wheels on the crafts and would much prefer skids for both factions that touch down with a satisfying clang. I also feel like some kind of persistent wreckage or other form of battle remnants would be really cool - maybe just ejected cockpits/pods with emergency lights and a few smoke/debris clouds. Anyway, looking forward to it. Cheers o/

I decided that "strike craft" was too specific, because the term "strike" has specific connotations in the air warfare community. There are other types of small craft that will be in the game, such as the skiff or scout, which don't really fit under that narrow umbrella. The only thing that would technically be a "strike craft" would be a bomber or an interceptor configured with the S2 bay. Wheels vs skids were contentious. Wheels were selected because, while the hangar you see in this video is self-contained, the carrier hulls themselves will have internal hangars separate from the launch pads and wheels make much more sense for enabling easy movement inside the ship by deck crews. Imagine how quickly a deck would wear out dragging skid-equipped fighters across it dozens of times a day every day.

I wonder how the small craft will interact with ships. I could see a flight of interceptors being able to run QRF with small motor, big HE warhead S1s. Ooh, I get the feeling that ANS Interceptors will be doing a LOT of hunter-killer missions on OSP offset spotters.

@xinguan2681 I meant more strike craft mounted to the hull of a larger ship, not another strike craft. Instead of an internal hanger you just mount a bunch of strike craft to the exterior hull of a larger warship.

A question I have though: Will missiles be resized? I could be wrong but these planes seem rather small and having missiles the size of fighters seems a bit wild if said missile is a S1, especially if these fighters also carry them

The missiles as they are currently actually fit really nicely with no resizing required. The S1s you're seeing on the fighters in the video are the same ones you're using in the game today. A single S2 can even fit comfortably inside the belly of the interceptor.
