You've got the story basically, but what you receive when you read is her beautiful writing style. I've read all of her books. Each is a jewel. I often stop or reread passages for the delicious satisfaction of her writing.

Ther story is excellent in characterizing people well. It seems to drag in the beginning but I like the long introduction of characters. It may have facts included like the 7 days gangs although it's very well planned secrecy. Im not entirely finished to the end but I bought this book and I'll definitely buy others of Toni Morrisons. Thank you.

Hey, thanks for the comment. Definitely recommend other Toni Morrison books (I love "Jazz," and "Beloved"), but a few others I've read that are kind of in the same vein as this one are "White is for Witching" by Helen Oyeyemi, "Sing, Unburied, Sing" by Jesmyn Ward, and "Parable of the Sower," by Octavia E. Butler. Hope this helps.

@@p810-n2b Another great magical realism novel is Gabriel Garcia Marquez' 100 years of Solitude. It has the same kind of dreamy time concepts as Song of Solomon. Great review and I'll check out your other recs. fun update- just reserved all of them at my library, tysm!

@@tirzahgayla If your library has it, The Old Drift by Namwali Serpell is a book that came out a few years ago that has been compared to 100 Years of Solitude. It's very good as well.
