Drugs. Oracles always are “inspired” by drugs and in music, recitation... There are ways to change human conciense, but you need drugs and a very calculated atmosphere. Many religions are good doing that. It happened and still happens today in many cultures.

Long Caly this is a consultation with the Nechung Oracle. It is, by definition, a spirit possession of the person who was the center of attention wearing the elaborate crown and, apparently also the old woman as well. As the story goes, thousands of years ago there were wild demon spirits with omniscient knowledge of the universe who were conquered and tamed by the Buddha who made them swear to act as servants of the human world and protectors of Dharma. They still communicate with these spirits on a regular basis, and this is what you're seeing here. As for the old woman; it is not uncommon for another spirit to need to pay homage to the Nechung Oracle while in human form and, instead of taking rebirth in our world to do so, they take possession of someone like the woman you see here at the same time as the Nechung has possession of the Llama acting as medium, such that that interaction can take place.

+Fernando Beletini the Oracle appointed by the patmasambawa as the Guardian of tibetan buddhism.(history) but I think it does not necessarily need to represent buddha's teaching. these are guardians to protect it(at least that's what we believe) I also think it was created to integrate Buddha's teaching into Tibetan society.

Doesn't all this ritual kinda contradict the teachings of Buddhism? I'm pretty sure they teach against superstition (like consulting an oracle) and the worshipping of idols/deities. Not that they're worshipping a deity here or anything, but it does seem like a lot of unnecessary ceremony. I have a lot of respect for Tibetan culture and Vajrayana though, it looks so intricate and beautiful.

TheViking Pro well,there's a whole lineage of buddhists who practise tantric buddhism and Tibet was known for it practise of magic (mostly black magic) so basically this is a form of culture more than buddhism itself.

I have uncles who are tibetan buddhist lamas and know lamas who have gone deep into woods/ caves to practise meditation/tantric buddhism and if you ask every learned lama,he will know that there is a whole lineage in tibetan buddhist clan who solely practise tantric buddhism as i stated earlier in my statement ( the first comment),i have read books on milerapa, who is a prime example of early tantric buddhist lama/yogis in tibet and have read countless books but sure,go ahead and twist my words again. I've had enough of this, I will no longer be replying, I'm not really a practising buddhist who has the patience for this.

Before Buddhism was introduced to Tibet, indigenous Tibetans practiced Bon religion (similar to shamanism) so it is rooted in our culture. The oracles/deities (Nechung, Khandro La, etc reside in the spiritual realm and natural world). They inform us about the future, and offer advice, and acts as a guard to protect his Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama. It's said that Nechung advised HH Dalai Lama to leave the Potala palace before china's invasion of Tibet in 1959 (the night before chinese army arrived to the palace & killed/tortured millions of Tibetans, there's ongoing human rights violation in Tibet, china exploiting Tibet's natural resources that's contributing to climate change). I'm happy to share my knowledge, and inform you. We have a rich history that is beyond what you see here.

The Tenma Goddesses are Twelve Guardian Deities of Tibetan Buddhism. In Dharamsala, India, there is a Tenma oracle, consulted and honoured by HH Dalai Lama. I'd like to add that the Nechung Oracle (State oracle of Tibet) is the personal oracle of HH Dalai Lama and is considered very highly. Oracles are normally called upon as protectors and healers. However, their primary function is to protect the Buddha Dharma and its practitioners.
