I'm playing my #epiphone #noelgallagher Riviera. I really like the AC30 BLUE 2x12 - XR IR PACK from ‪@Tone_Factor‬ . I use @BogStreet picks, the Battle Axe medium textured. I'm playing with my good friends at Oak Ridge Baptist Church.
I make these videos for a few reasons. The main reason is that I’m a tone junkie and always looking to tweak my gear to get the best sound I can from it. I like the sound of my gear by itself, but to me the pinnacle of good tone is when it sounds great in a band context. Producing these videos gives me the opportunity to compare changes that I make.
The second reason I do this is that it makes me a better player. When you are playing, you can’t grasp all the nuances like you can when you listen to a recording of yourself. The missed notes that left everyone’s minds quickly during the performance stick around in a recording. As does the bad timing. As do other aspects, like over playing, under playing, too much of an effect, etc. A song that you think that you’ve nailed while playing it may not be as polished when you listen to the recording.
Being able to listen to all of these details in a recording helps you identify things that you can improve. That’s what I like about this. It’s a live recording and sometimes I don’t do everything right. Plus, in the worship music world, we don’t play the same 20 songs every weekend for a year like a band does that is touring their new album. And for a hobbyist guitar player, I don’t have 40 hours to devote to a handful of songs each week. I don’t have time to record myself at home, listen back, and adjust. You and I get to do that together via KZbin 😉.
Anyway, I wanted to write this out for anyone who reads the notes that either might wonder if I know that sometimes I play poorly, or that are too afraid to try this themselves. Look, I’m still here, playing. I haven’t been asked to not play. The internet has not (yet) featured me in a Guitar Fails video. And I could not possibly care any less about what people think about my ability. These videos are helping me to learn and improve and serve as a history of how I played a song in case I need to remember it in the future.
Go ahead and record 1st takes of yourself and post them. You’ll be better for it.
