How to measure neck thickness of cartridge cases using a neck thickness micrometer.

Beware, I have a Mitutoyo 547-561S Digimatic thickness gauge (same type as used here) and there is one huge problem with using this instrument to measure neck thickness. In order to get an accurate measurement, the case has to be absolutely square with the flat upper measuring rod. If it isn't, you'll get wildly differing measurements because the distance between the upper shaft and the fixed anvil changes. It's possible to get accurate measurements but it is very time consuming and you certainly can't spin the case to get a reading on how the thickness varies. This is not the case for the neck thickness tools by Redding and Sinclair witch support the case with a rod that goes through the flash hole. I'm going to be selling my Mitutoyo and pick up a tube micrometer since that should be easier to get an accurate measurement at one point.

Interesting product, I can see some advantages for some types of measuring that needs to be done but for case neck thickness, I will stick to my ball micrometer mounted in a vice holder.

These are superior as the measurement is dynamic unlike standard micrometers. Also called snap micrometers. You can spin the case and see the gauge move with having to reset as with most micrometers.

I would love to procure this product but unfortunately I can’t find one anywhere.
