What are the herbs that used to be used in necromancy?
@ArithHärger
@ArithHärger 3 жыл бұрын
One was Leek, that's for sure and comes in the sources as well, and in Swedish traditional folk magic still used. The others I'm still trying to figure them out. Could also be Aconite, but that one I'm not sure it was used in the north, but rather in southern Atlantic countries, as it was still used in modern witchcraft related to Necromancy in the British Isles, Gallician and Portuguese folk magic. The dirt of a burial mound/grave is often mentioned in later sources, 16th century onwards, which may include mold and lichen formed in such environment.

Fun fact, not saying it's an clear heathen practise, but there were uses of deadmans fingers in sweden. Used for different kinds of magical practises. So much, if i remember correctly, it became a problem. This was, i think, in the 1800's. Språk och folkminnes Institutet could have something written about it.

First and foremost - most fascinating video, it was a delight for a curious mind. Secondly, from what I gather the acts of necromancy for the Norse (and their gods) was to just get the information/sword/etc. from the dead and then let them go back peacefully to their eternal slumber? Are there any records on rising the dead for the purpose of bringing back to life some dear person, or pet? I mean reanimating the untimely deceased beloved ones, and such.

I use to have the craziest dreams and one of them was really amazing and insightful more than anything ive ever learned actually. Within, an answer rendered about creation. When we focus our thought enough we dream these things. Imagine particular outcomes to dream them. Once you dream them your subconscious accepts it as an inevitability. And when that happens its attracted to you like...how do i put this...without pursuit?

Arith, you speak of the Christian influences on the Sagas. Actual changes to the original text. I'm sure Beowulf is another example of changes made to an original text to make it more Christian. An old story of Danes and Geats fighting supernatural forces, but written in Old English and discovered in an English monestary of all places. It would be wonderful to have the true and original text of these historic tales as told in their original language.

I am curious that it was recorded that the dead could not speak. Perhaps newly dead could but the longer they were dead they could not? Or whether an intercessor such as Hekate nearby would be why the dead could speak, because it is she who has summoned them as the Norse deities did.

Nice video. A few nitpicks. I don't think that syllable vol in voluspa is not the same as the val in valhalla. en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Völuspá. IIRC Jackson Crawford mentioned that the kind of magic named Seidr was only practiced by women, and we know little about it, so Odins death galdr cannot have been seidr. As you say we don't have archeological evidence of riruals in which the living norse tried to contact the dead, but in the saga named Helgakvida, a woman wakes up her dead father in a graveyard to inherit his sword.

He did indeed; a very famous necromancer. He passed on the knowledge to his disciples so they could perform the ritual and bring him back. Smart move. Always give the right tools to your best buddies so in the future it will turn to your advantage. It's like nurturing the soil with care and love to harvest the best fruits. But jokes aside, yes Christianity has some degree of necromantic knowledge and ritual since it was created by the Romans. Only with the increasing Jewish religious understandings and the alterations throughout history, certain aspects were "buried" and quite forgoten, but certain Roman ceremonial performances are still there.

your presentations are great because they are a must.there is something i'd like to add. freya summoned vithar (thor) to the hall of gerther (jord) which was his birth cave and jord's burial place. she pretended that jord's spirit had risen from the tomb by holding a necromancy rite. by using jord's bones as a medium and performing a shaman dance, she commanded thor to avenge his father's death by claiming to have spoken in jord's name.thank you for your presentations, meytal menkin, rechovot , israel

Well 2 years later & no books. He is such a knowledgeable person. I keep thinking "we wil lose everything, if he doesnt get a book out at least one" because WHEN the internet goes down & it will we will lose all his information forever. There will be no next generation of pagans/heatherns, etc. I can not retain all this info. To teach my kids. I'm so sad. And ive been practicing for years , just recently got into Viking though.

In another video you mentioned notions of reincarnation, and I have heard this from many others too. But then I hear of these stories of spirit meetings and ancestor commune. How do these two things exist at the same time? As of now I hear two different reasons: 1. Each being has 2 spirits within, and one becomes the next reincarnation, while the other is the one that stays behind and either becomes a spirit or goes to another realm (this is a shamanic belief seen in Mongolia too) 2. Between reincarnation phases is when one goes to one of the 9 realms, depending. You only go to these realms usually temporarily until you reincarnate again sometime later. Spirits exist because they somehow get stuck and cannot reincarnate or go to the other realm for reasons such as curses or emotional reasons. Are either of these correct? I would love to hear your take on this

I'm not against necromancy, BUT... just from a biological perspective (especially with out using proper protection), it's just not good to play with dead things, or disturbing the dead! GREAT VIDEO and BEST REGARDS TO ALL!

Thank you very much. Well, maybe you don't know this but I'm an archaeologist, which means 90% of my work is spending time with old bones: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5jbhWaMjtdsnKc here's a video I've made giving a glimpse of the work. But I totally understand what you say, believe me.

Great video as always! I was wondering about drug use in the ancient norse world. You have alluded to it in past videos but an inclusive video of all aspects would be wonderful. Farewell from Kentucky!
