It is fascinating that the Old Norse concept of 'Önd', which stands for breath, breath of life, the spirit re spark awakening one's life and sustaining life, as explained so wonderful in this video, we also find in ancient Egyptian myth as 'On', in ancient Indian traditions as 'Om', and in South African Bushman Khoi-San language as 'n/om'. All derive from a common, earlier proto-concept.

Traces of this even in modern Norse languages. In Swedish "Anda" is breath, and "Ande" is spirit.

I love how the parts of the self have relational properties- they connect & define relationships between the various parts of oneself, but also to one's community & to other beings. This is such a contrast to the idea of the self being a binary (ie: soul & body) & an oppositional binary at that (ie: soul is good, body is sinful). This is such a nuanced & sophisticated "map" as it were of all the aspects of oneself. Truly beautiful!

Another fun observation, we have that in Danish as well, but we also say "vejrtrækning", literally translated as "weather pulling". This one makes more sense on its own, but also note that the breath was given to us by Odin, who used to be a weather God, so we're pulling in his gift or aspect. There's lots of fun etymology in this.

I am a shaman that has totem spirit animal and I have travelled in other realms either changing into a spirit form similar to my guide or riding on my guide's back. I always knew that this spirit has different attributes than my normal guides and what you said about Fylgja just resonated with how I perceived that spirit. I am a Shaman that draw from various Pagan traditions (not Christian like some people incorporate angels and Roman Catholic lore into their belief system which is to me like oil and water because you can't mix monotheism and Polytheism, just doesn't feel right to me, but I won't judge people that do) and I have had experiences with Nordic (hope it is the right term) entities. @@WolfShadowwhisper Monotheism and polytheism can mix well if you percieve gods as hypostases or aspects of one absolute godhead. In many philosophical systems that was actually a case (for example neoplatonic). Besides even in bible if I remember correctly (I would have to check this to be sure) there are fragments that sugests that some gods in which pagans belive may be in (biblical) reality angels of Yahweh, to whom Yahweh gave permission to rule pagans. Although in judaism/christianity choosing to serve those angels (which some if I remember correctly would have fallen nature) after coming to knowledge about Yahweh/christ would be seen as bad.

Alright, for all that inspiration from your videos for the past few days I want to give something back. I do not know if you will read this or if my words manifest themselves in your world in a relatable way but I try my best :) The Self is probably exactly what you describe: an entity that got different parts that make it what it is. The phenomenon you describe, that certain parts have a life of their own, I can agree with. At least that is what my personal experience and observation shows me. For example: when you take a distance to everything you perceive, or sense, not only the outer world but also your thoughts and emotions, your beliefs etc. and imagine to be only the silent observer, a spectator of your life, you create a new form of self awareness. This position of the observer is a new form of self, it is already a kind of shapeshifting because you become the observer, or spectator, instead of actively being involved in the scene. Once someone understands this and can identify with this form of self one realizes that, somehow, that what one precieved as his or her self is only a fraction of what he or she truly is. As the observer, one can not only observe but also interact with the "former self". One becomes two conscious beings in one body. The conscious connection, the bridge, between conscious and subconscious is built. It is a symbiotic relationship. The "new self" as observer is "born" out of the "old self" or entity of some sort. Your "former self" ALLOWS you to identify with something else than "it". This position as the observer is what you then can transfer to other parts of this world, or other spiritual realities but it is of utmost importance to get to know what has "born" you as the observer. To differentiate between the observing part and the part that "does things" is, in my opinion, an important early step in spiritual development because the position of the observer ties all of your fractions, or parts, together because, with practice, it is able to perceive, or sense, all of them. One needs to also keep in mind that the observer part has also been there since birth. With realizing it is a part of ones self one shifts his or her consciousness towards that part. Some call it the "higher self" but it is of the exact same value as other parts of ones self. It is, like I said, a position that grants a greater view on the own perception of the world. And finally, to include my interpretation of your words to me: from an animistic point of view one can picture that all what carried you through life, the entity that gave "birth" to the observer, is a person one can interact with. A part of oneself that has a consciousness and life of its own. And before one is truly able to communicate with Non-Human or Other-Than-Human or More-Than-Human entities, at least in my opinion, one has to be able to differentiate between the parts that are, in a certain sense, closer to oneself and those of other entities. Alright, I hope that makes some sense to you. I am writing this early in the morning and need to go to work now, haha. Wishing you only the best, René

Great video! Love your work, Arith! You might also consider that Christian theology has had differing expressions of the dualism or nondualism of body and soul (or spirit, mind, whatever). Much of Christian theological history has been dominated by an application of Neoplatonic body/soul dualism. But we might not necessarily say that this is fundamental to Christianity. There’s no way we could get into a robust discussion of corporeality in Christian theology here. But perhaps just take note that there is a deep and vital tradition of the indivisibility of body and spirit in Christian theology, represented not least of all in Jesus himself-perceived as the revelation of divinity and humanity unified. This indivisibility is crucial to Christian theology once you get deep into the tradition.

So I do appreciate your support and it makes me really happy to know people enjoy the content I create ^^

31:20 Golden nuggets for the day. Arith, thx for sharing you're knowledge about this. Makes much more sense and gives a feeling of ease than the doctrine that I've been conditioned with.

As always great video. I had to bail halfway through cause I noticed a high pitch chittering around the point of hugr and minni that was too piercing to keep listening. I guess the flipside of lodur's blessing

Very interesting Arith, thanks, I like that you throw some science in there too. Minni kinda reminds of the recent discoveries in epigenetics, I do at least see some aspects in common. See you on the next vid!

Some religions deny science, but I think science is a great way to understand the mind of our ancestors and it's actually through science that we come to explain spirituality. Science doesn't deny the spiritual, if anything it actually helps to understand out surroundings. As I often say, the gods manifest themselves through nature, and if we understand the nature of all things we understand the presence of the divine ^^ Thank you for your time and I'm glad you enjoyed this one as well. See you on the next video! :D

As if you took the words out of my mouth =D That's the beauty in paganism, it's intimately related to nature and us forming part of it, something we've distanced ourselves from in the last millenia, when we break the link we've got with nature we end up harming ourselves in multiple ways. Also, I really think people in ancient times were far more aware of natural phenomenons and how the world works than first assumed.

To respond to your closing comments, I appreciate your efforts to speak slowly and clearly. Now it is up to me to try and remember as much of what you have shared, as I can. The Norse "Parts of the Self", as you said, is more complex and involved than the Judeo.Christian and Urantian concepts of Mind, Body and Soul". I must ask you if you, yourself, have actually experienced all, most of, or some of the Norse Parts Of The Self? I did experience a totem animal once....briefly. It was a Mallard Duck, I named "Quackers". It had waddled into my tipi one morning, like it always had (seemed comfortable and familiar with this, though it had never been there before) after I went up on top of it to ask for a Spirit Guide in the full Moon night. I may be delusional, but this little episode, was a happy experience, where "Quackers" showed me how to spread my limbs in greeting to the Sun and delve into dark waters with my heinee in the air. I only experienced "Quackers" for about a week and then lost the privilege of his guidance, by letting my Female Companion threaten him with my bow and arrow. I told her to stop and she let fly. He lifted his wing and let the arrow pass and disappeared...while I was scolding "La" for what she did. Looked for him, but never saw him again and didn't feel worthy enough to call him back. This was probably my most unique "Spiritual" experience thus far.

Thank you for putting this knowledge out in an acceptable way. The more videos I see the better I can visualize many abstract concepts and it helps me put together other things. Do you happen to have a pdf or some type of written presentation that tou could share ? Or have you publish something related to this ?

I wonder how many cultures have a similar concept to Minni, this idea that a memory is not stuck inside one person's brain but that memory can be outside an individual. That is worth diving into.

This is such a great video, well presented and thought provoking - I took notes :) Where did you get the info on the rock carvings and their gesture being linked to megin? It seems very plausible, but just wondering about the source. I grew up in the region where some of the biggest rock carvings are found, so its extra interesting for me to know what the images are most likely portraying.

Another question, can we somehow find any relation between the self in norse sense with the self in vedic sense? In far east they also had 4 dimensions of intelligence, one being the memory like mimir, intellectual mind as hugr, but they also had the part of self concerned with identity (egomind) that could relate to a point with "hamr". The fourth dimension of human intelligence was beyond intellect and more direct, something like insight, intuition and individual potential as in the sense of "maegen" But they also had the concept of higher self (cosmic consciousness) related to enlightenment and the lower self (ego) related to our society induced delusions. Could the norse self somehow relate to the higher self with "Od"? Or more parts? Did the norse somehow had any sense about weakness, limitations, delusions of mind or self in terms of the EGO that is factually a real problem that worsend with the rise of civilisation, our tendency to confuse reality with our mental projections, or symbols and abstract constructs within our social psychodynamics. Did the norse pagans had any way of inner dicipline to demask the ego and raise awareness beyond what we call "selfishness or ego centered self" or did they embrace ego as part of the soul and see our tendencies to be delusive as natyral or nonproblematic?

So I’m starting to watch through this video. I’ve been obsessed with bears since I was a toddler, and my fathers side of the family jokes that they’re all bears (Germanic descent, mostly Danish). They even act like bears, mostly the men. When I was about 10, my father gave me a stuffed polar bear toy with a baby bear and said that was him and I. To think of him when I hugged it. He passed away about 13 years ago, he fought it and said he had more to do and wasn’t going to die. There have been crazy signs of him being around somehow afterward, though it’s finally been fading somewhat over the past couple years. I started seeing polar bears everywhere after moving back to Alaska, where he always wanted to return to. I know there are bear drawings etc up here and not every single polar bear image reminds me of him, but sometimes it’s like being hit by bricks. I also dreamt about polar bears a few time and they were like messengers. I did dream about a giant polar bear once about 8 years before my father passed, and it said to not be afraid, that it would protect me. This was around the time I moved back to be with my father in Washington. (Our family split up when I was a teenager) Anyway I’ve always wondered about polar bears with my father since he passed. Not sure what’s going on there or how it works since he’s gone but also seeming to linger somehow to watch over my kids as they’ve grown. He loved them dearly and wanted to watch them grow up. Since they’ve been reaching adult age, his presence has been fading. I’ve been wondering, too, if I have a polar bear as well. My family has been about the ice and cold forever, almost all of them moved to Alaska or wanted to move back here. Maybe that’s our family animal? I always thought for me it was a grizzly or a panda. It’s interesting to consider. Anyway I appreciate this video. I’ll be sure to watch through all of it.
