It's probably about how culture perceives life after death. In Greek mythology, if someone was dedicated enough, they could walk out of Hades. Christianity on the other hand see it as a reward or punishment for how person lived. Then necromancy is going to be evil, as the dead can escape Hell, or a soul can be brought back down to earth from heaven even if for short pierod of time it's going to be an act against will of the God.

@@TragedysHalo It's near impossible to walk out of the Underworld, but people can walk into the Underworld. The most famous story of this is the musician Orpheus who went to the Underworld to save his wife Eurydice, who died young. Orpheus went before Hades and Persephone and played his music for them, and it was so beautiful that Hades was brought to tears. So, Hades allowed Orpheus to leave the Underworld with his wife, on the condition that he must walk in front of her and never look back at her until both of them were back to the world of the living. Well, fear and anxiety got the better of him, and the closer they got to the surface, more the fear grew that his wife may not really be behind him at all during their trip. When Orpheus reached the surface world, he was so overjoyed that he immediately looked back to his wife, forgetting that they both had to reach the surface before he could look back at her; she was still far enough back to still be in the Underworld. The deal broken, she was pulled back to the Underworld and Orpheus was left alone.

If we were going to include Christianity and Lord into the argument, an ill example of necromancy would be King Saul raising the spirit of the judge Samuel in a desperate attempt to find the word of God. I remember that one guy doing a 1-on-1 tabletop session as a necromancer. He was doing great as a necromancer until the heroes came. It turns that he'd been playing as the villain to another campaign of the GM, and he did great as he used necromancy as a way to alleviate the need for workforce and to work the farms, giving freedom to the people who had lived on subsistence farming. The heroes were just blindly following the words of the people who preferred the status quo and just doomed the people he freed back to the hands of the ones who would kept them powerless. The GM praised him for how beautifully he used his necromancy to create a compelling villain and how it actually left a strong impression on the other side of the campaign.

In my opinion, the difference between the "good" necromancy and the "bad" is simple, in the first case you are politely asking for the dead to answer, in the second case you wrench them from their resting place and force them to do your bidding. In a more fantasy-ish way, communing with the dead is good, using them as tools is wrong. This of course supposes that in the case of raising the dead, they have a soul, otherwise moving an empty dead body is not really "evil" in my opinion. On the church thing, abrahamic religions see the cycle of life and death as especially sacred, and in medieval theology "good" souls have no interest in leaving Heaven, so, the only souls that would answer are those of Hell, or devils themselves. Thus necromancy, in a judeo-christian perspective, is basically calling forth an evil presence.

@maggiemoonpie2168 Жыл бұрын
@@christbenitez8797 I respectfully disagree my friend. Whether it's used for good or bad is irrelevant, or should I say, the problem. Even if used for good, you're controlling people and situations to suit your desires, which is incredibly controlling and narcissistic. It's like the ruler of North Korea, Kim Jung, he is quite literally a psychopathic control freak and he thinks he's fooling everyone, and everyone is going along with his pathetic charade, smiling and nodding maniacally. He replaced his name with the name Jesus in all the bibles and tells them he's the reincarnation of their savior, yet they drop dead like flies because they are starving. Any money to save them is being used to manufacture the charade. The wizard of oz. Only those without control of their own lives seek to control others. Only by relinquishing control to God can we then be in control. White magic is this, in a nutshell, as is black. It's playing God, pretending to know better than He. It always backfires because a relationship with God is a symbiotic one, we are nothing without Him and everything with Him. That's because He is within us, otherwise we will never be whole and always be incomplete. You cannot be truly happy and at peace without Him. Moreover it's literally impossible to be depressed and suicidal when we relinquish ourselves to Jesus, mind, body and soul- it all ties in. And even situations deemed tragic are necessary, we should not go against the natural order. Pain and adversity are gifts. When we reflect and process it all properly, using our experience to help others and having learned our lessons, we become better human beings and evolve the soul exponentially. Therefore it is not only arrogant to think we know better than God but we may be depriving ourselves of the life experience and deprive other people of our wisdom and sage advice borne of life experience. They would benefit from our compassion, empathy and an overall innate understanding we wouldn't have otherwise given. Life changing experience we and they, are richer for. We pay for the sins of out mothers and fathers, that's why we're continuously living out cycles of tragic situations, grief, dysfunction, addiction and illnesses, like some sort of groundhog day movie, we're compelled to do it until we get it right or for at least two generations or more, whichever comes first, because it's all borne of sin, which stems from the demonic and sure Jesus paid our debt and yes, sin may be forgiven, but that doesn't mean anyone is off the hook, it doesn't just go away. In fact we're judged not on the sin but how that sin has negatively affected others, only it's tenfold, to account for the ripple effect, and it always comes back to bite you in the ass. The universe is a mirror, hurting others is actually a form of self loathing because you're only hurting yourself and your children and grandchildren. So sin should be paid for and purified, there's no getting around it, maybe it's delayed but that's only making things worse, it's cheating. I always pray that God's will be done, you can't go wrong. And lastly, both white and black magic involves communication with gods, demons and the like. Familiars are generational demons with a pretty name, but they are demons - disembodied souls of the nephilim or some variation disembodied energetic beings that are in rebellion with God. Demons lie, pose as angels, spirit guides and loved ones passed on, and demons always double cross, period. It's their nature. Their nature is one of deception, with an insatiable blood lust so they mean us harm! There's just so much we don't know about traversing the unseen realm. White magic is a sigil, it's a state of bondage that inevitably leads us down darker and darker paths and all those roads lead to hell. That's why the Bible warns us that if we take this route, come judgement day Jesus will utter those dreaded words- depart from Me- I no longer know ye- I hope I didn't come off as condescending, but I learned the hard way-

I personally like the Necromancers from Diablo the most. They fight to preserve the balance between Light and Darkness and they're among the only mortals to have never fallen to corruption. I'll leave a quote here : "Although their art is considered "dark," and the people of the outside world shun the priests who practice these arts, these mysterious cultists never suffered the epidemic of corruption that plagued the ancient mages. They will accept any spellwork provided it does not cause its user to become corrupted. Pragmatists in the truest sense, they are above temptation. They see death merely as a natural part of life and do not seek to deny its arrival. These ideals, coupled with an understanding of the natural balance between Order and Chaos, explain why they have not fallen prey to the influences of evil. However, their serious demeanor and the powers of life and death they manipulate often lead others to suspect them of having more sinister motives." Or, a similar example : "The Priests of Rathma live and die by a simple philosophy: that the eternal struggle between light and darkness is never-ending, and that Sanctuary is threatened by both sides of that war. Only by preserving the Balance and keeping those opposing forces at bay, one can hope to make the world a better place."

If we are talking about the core aspect of Necromancy "Communicating with the dead" then every aspect of Shamanism seen in fiction, or even in historic tribal areas, can also be seen as Necromancy such as with the Scandinavian Druids or the Native American Medicine women or Augur. I just see Necromancy as another form of Magic but with how often it is used in fiction, and the manner upon which it is used which often changes based on the story, makes it a discipline that is very difficult not to abuse. As they say "Power corrupts but Absolute Power corrupts Absolutely" and what power could be considered greater than having access to the unlimited resource of the souls of the departed, willingly or not?

Necromancy is based on decay and death energy they focus on communing with the dead and preparing the recently deceased for the afterlife they can't raise skeleton but they can call the spirits of the dead to defend or protect a person or earth. The man purpose of necromancer is communing with the dead and preparing the deceased for the after life. Now shamanism can commune with the dead as well prepare the descased for the after life.

I've noticed in your videos that you tend to avoid Biblical examples - if that's because you just don't know much about those stories, I'd love to be of service! Im a Bible college graduate who went on to become an athiest story teller. If you avoid those stories to just not cause yourself problems with fanatics, well, I can understand that too! Keep up the awesome work, I'm loving your style!

Seeing a picture of MTG’s Liliana Vess reminds me of the fact that her career began as a healer, with necromancy coming as a later extension of her powers. That’s a fascinating connection (ie both arts defy death) that I think few ppl actually explore in their magic systems!
@sarahgrace34883 жыл бұрын
One must-watch (or must-read, for those so inclined) for a nuanced portrayal of necromancy is The Untamed (or The Grandmaster Of Demonic Cultivation for the book, which has a lot more necromancy and moral greyness)-where the main character is a necromancer. Wei Wuxian is the fallen hero/villain of his world, who died in a horrific and tragic way 13/16 years before he is brought back as a way to get revenge for somebody, and gets wrapped up in a murder mystery/epic romance with an upright and moral old enemy of his. Wei Wuxian is a DELIGHT of a character-he's fun, outrageous, flawed and even if a lot of what he's done was VERY wrong and messed up in comparison to the correct and conventional ways of magic (like raising up an entire army of the dead to go home and murder their families, communicating with the dead through living their experiences, using the resentment of dead people as energy for magic, etc.), it's understandable _why_ he does it-and he's by no means an evil character. The Untamed is a 50 episode, 1 season long series, available for free (with ads, but good quality subtitles) on Rakuten Viki. It's a bit confusing at first, but I'd say it's well worth it if you love good depictions of necromancy (especially past the 20 episode mark).

you work till you die and then you work some more. hmm explains why he has a nonestop work scheduale. all the elves are undead. also one source of santa was Odin, who was god of the dead and summoned up the spirit of a Völva to ask for wisdom
@nekrouni84974 жыл бұрын
Markus Nävergård not to mention, Odin was a master of magic and sought to know all knowledge in the nine realms. This may help to explain how Santa is capable of knowing where everybody wants, lives, Been bad or good, and when they’re sleeping or awake and can deliver all of their presents in one day and night.

Thanks for making a video explaining what a necromancer is and what they do to an more nutrial and educational stance the necromancer archetype is one of my favorites of all time because of how they can use their powers who they keep around them for their image to the world and the moral delima that each and every character has to think about personally especially in a situation that you could find yourself in in a did game my favorite party I've ever played in had a necromancer and a holy palidan in the same party and everything that either one did was a extreme moral delima for the other and it just impossible to explain that thought process unless you done it with a serious roleplay heavy party but it's amazing thank you again for the honor you have done

All I could think about was the Deathly Hallows from Harry Potter, mainly the resurrection stone and elder wand,while listening to your explanation of what necromancy is. Harry spoke to the spirits of his fallen family before he went off to face Voldemort and even revived himself afterwards. Harry wasn't evil like Voldemort. So I agree that not all necromancers are evil.

That's a healthy way to explore your fear and I would definitely encourage it. The horror genre is basically a tool humanity can use to look at the monsters within and around us, and perhaps come to terms with it. Psychologically speaking, facing your fear in a safe environment is a great way to either overcome it or develop coping mechanisms. Something else to ponder: we hate and fear in others what we contain within ourselves and refuse to recognize. That is kind of a short explanation of a shadow self. They're shadow because you are too scared to look at them. But you'll find, when you do amass the courage to turn and look, that the shadow self (in this case, the magical part of yourself) is cold, lonely beyond words, malnourished, fearful, perhaps angry, but generally willing to speak with you. You can ask her name and ask what she wants to say to you, as you've unknowingly been ignoring and neglecting her for a very long time. Ideally the two of you can build a relationship. This is the power of mythology and stories - to transform us and make us whole.

I actually do have a necromancer DnD character. She isn't evil, but started communing with spirits because her mother had little time for her as a child, and she discovered a book of necromantic rituals one day while perusing a castle library unsupervised. She definitely falls on the 'knowledge' side of things, and sees necromancy more as a field of study than as a means to gain power.

jesus, too, would qualify as a necromancer. he did raise lazarus, after all. then too, would not jesus' father -- who is also jesus him self, according to the stories -- be a necromancer? for, come the end of times, jesus' father would raise the dead before bringing them to "judgment". so.. that would make the abrahamic god its very self a necromancer. so..

I've always liked Orochimaru from Naruto in terms of his necromancy. He raises the dead to fight for him (the past Hokage), but the bodies are conscious, and realize they have been raised from the dead. The dead know it is vile, that they don't belong in the living world, and hate that they have been raised, but they don't have control over their actions. It's a nice little twist to the normal brainless-corpse type necromancy.
