As an adult I purposely moved near a train track...it's one of the most beautiful sounds to my ears, the horn blowing in the distance at 3am. It's comforting bc it takes me back to a time when I thought this world was a good place- my head was full of dreams then. Rain and train sounds: Perfection.

In Columbus, Ohio trains used to creep through areas so close to the homes you could see them from your bedroom window. Trains would have to signal at certain large crossings, then it was just the soothing sounds of hundreds of heavy railcars, rolling along, gently rumbling,...punctuated by clicks and clacks.

When I was a young child, the edge of my backyard had railroad tracks. They were busy because we lived between Chicago and Milwaukee. I've never lived in the south but I live in a fairly modern area that has trains going through it alot. Awhile back I would visit my dad who lived in an apartment complex on the sixth floor with train tracks running across a parking lot. I would constantly hear trains throughout the day/night. We were at the perfect distance to hear it clearly but not to the point where it was loud or shook the walls and somehow it offered me comfort and relaxation. I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who gains this outlook from train noises

Love it! Reminds me of staying at my grandparents in the summer time. They lived 4 blocks from the CSX (former Clinchfield RR) mainline that was once a busy coal hauling route. They kept the windows open with a fan running so hearing the train coming through at night with passing storms sounded about like this. Now with the coal industry slowly dying, the rail line only sees 2 to 4 trains a day compared to 15 to 20 a day.
