Shaun Davey's music for Waking Ned Devine, a scene in which Jackie extemporises an oration to a living friend in the congregation. Uilleann pipes played by John McSherry.

My best Pal of 33 years was from Belfast. I sponsored him for his "Green Card", and he introduced me to this movie. We made a promise to do this piece at the funeral of the one of us who went first. I wound up doing it for him as the opening to his eulogy before about a thousand mourners who turned out for a transplanted solicitor who practiced law in a Mid-Atlantic County seat. I can never watch this clip without a tear in the eye and thoughts of him and our friendship!

This scene always reminds me of trying to get my granny in her coffin out of her narrow corridor house. She ended up in every position possible. Had she been alive there would have been roars of laughter coming from the coffin.

“He had his faults”. The Irish way. Don’t let you’re mate get a big ego.

One of the truly great moments in cinema. Whoever wrote that scene understood what life is about... and to match it with such poignant background music was truly inspired too - poetry!

I have walked my path of almost 64 years now, and alone for the greater part with no such friend until i turned tonight and looked at my sleeping Wife and thought....That which you spent your life looking for Frank is sleeping beside me, and has been since i was a very young Man, and never any reason to explain myself to Zoe, for Zoe is my Misses, and i call her Misses, which she often told me that she likes me to call her Misses, with the greatest Respect of course on my behalf, and maybe for the first time in my life, but there is no need for the WORD MAYBE, but for the first time in my Life i no longer feel alone...and with never a need to explain myself....Never!

Brings a tear to my eye every time ... "the words spoken at a funeral, spoken too late for the man that is dead" ... such beautiful words. I love the 'he had his faults' as a wonderful leveler. This movie is perfect

This makes it even more heartbreaking when you realise Ian Bannen died 1 year later after the film was released in a car accident.

I tend to visit this clip in my cups at night, lost my dad over 30 years ago and mum passed last year at 93 . They were the best Irish I have ever known, kind, forgiving, open and caring, understanding and considerate......and ferocious when protecting their own. And their own included many other immigrants who werent Irish. They were my parents and I wish I was their equal x

One of my favorite characters in this movie is The Lotto Man. Sure, he represents a threat to the whole plot that these small-town, would be schemers have cooked up. But other than being in that position due to the plot, everything we see of him is a genuinely nice guy just going about business. He even gets an emotional reaction shot in this scene.
