*I don't think the SOTF plot is unsalvageable.* If you collect all the notes, Jianyu and Puffton actually make a fair bit of sense and are reasonably written characters. Jianyu held a grudge for being fired. Puffton feared Jianyu. Both saw visions that made them obsessed. I would change 3 things in terms of the plot: *1) Jack Holt* They should establish Jack Holt's connection, skills and motivations better. Puffton trusts Jack Holt(and wrote instructions to send Jack in case Jianyu assassinated him) But why? Because Jack Holt wrote a biography? No, let's write that Jack Holt had a on again off again fling with Virginia in the past. Thus Puffton saw Jack Holt as her daughter's ex boyfriend. Boom, makes the ending less awkward. Plus, Pufftons' visions that he had before the activation can further help support why he trusted Jack so much. *2) Establish why Jack Holt seeked the cube* This one should be easy, just add some more notes in the mid game bunker. We know that anyone outside the cube will mutate. We know that the cube would activate soon. But why does Jack Holt know that? Add a note in like, the entertainment bunker and boom, now it makes sense. Also good to give him a reason that he can't leave the island as soon as he find the Pufftons, like lack of outside awareness or contact. *3) Choose between Cultish fantasy and sci fi* They don't even need to get rid of the crosses and stuff. We can establish that instead of Christianity being real, we say the crosses are effective because the old missionaries used the crucifix to seal the 6 piece artifact, thus tying Christian faith to the artifacts and mutants' without necessitating that Christianity has to be true. Beyond those three main points, just clean up the details: -Who/what are the cannibals? Are they Natives? lesser mutants? Imported by Puffcorp? -Why was Virginia ok? Because she had a pure soul? Because Puffton put her in a special bunker due to his visions? -Why did Jianyu spare us and Kelvin? We know he shot us down for our laptop and keys, but why not finish us off? Is it because of Apathy? Perhaps did he want us to unlock the golden door? Or did he want us to go out and do Journalism to destroy Puffcorp's reputation? -The who and what of the golden city/spaceship can remain as a mystery to be unraveled in future games

It actually makes sense that Jianyu doesn’t kill you. Specially once you notice that his helicopter is actually flying around the island often times like following you. Like he’s actually setting you loose on the island to open the doors and clear out the path for him to reach the cube. This also explains why he only decides to let you live after realising you were Holt by the “press” badge. Someone who knows Puffton and knows what he thought like at least. As for the cube, I think Jianyu didn’t activate it, rather the next cycle began by itself. It is also implied Puffton had a bunch of dreams and visions, and he probably knew you’d come. It is also possible he saw that you’d save Virginia and that she’d survive, seeing that he rewrote his entire will so that everything will be passed down to her. So he probably foresaw that you’d save Virginia so he made sure you’d be there when shit hits the fan to save her, following his visions.

*Jianyu didn't start as a Sahara spy.* He was a normal employee of Puffcorp. Notably, according to one of the notes we find, he doesn't believe in the artifacts or the cube, calling Puffton obsessed with a 'fairy tale'. However, the employees kept finding copious amounts of dead bodies. That stress, combined with the cultists constantly trespassing on the island to commit religious suicide, caused Jianyu to snap, with him and his men executing some cultists. Puffton saw this, and fired Jianyu, according to the email "get off my island". Ironically, this saved Jianyu's life, as Jianyu was off the island when the cube triggered. Puffton had suspected Jianyu held a grudge and was losing it,. Fearing assassination by Jianyu, he instructed his company, that if he ever disappeared, send a investigative reporter Jack Holt(us) to find out what happened to him. Sahara eventually figured out there were artifacts on the island, and so hired and sent Jianyu with mercenaries to go investigate and, if possible, steal the artifacts. Which is why Jianyu's mercs shot us down, they were after our laptop, which had keys and maps for Holosprings. thus, the start of the game. There's alot about the lore I still haven't made sense of, but I'm at least pretty confident about the above.

To be fair, they may be planning something from another perspective (like Timmy's or back to Eric's) that has more of the connective tissue but misses out on certain major moments; that could tie together a lot of loose ends. A lot of the missing stuff could also be included in findable evidence in a third game, where it would be up to the players to connect them properly. There's all sorts of things they could do to connect the dots, it's more a question of will they do it right even if they do it.

Got a theory to why the cannibals on the island don't mutate because of the cube. If the cube activates every lunar cycle I assume it probably leaks radiation but at lower doses while deactivated. I assume the cannibals only get a little exposure on the surface which results in the titan, muddy, and the female claw cannibal variants, Mutated only slightly so no extra limbs. Cannibals that venture into the cave to hunt mutants end up mutating if the cube activates while they're inside, resulting in the underground caves being filled with mutants. As to why the mutants venture up from the caves I can only assume that the activity from Puffcorp using firearms, hiring loud construction teams, and all the vehicles combined with the already aggressive cannibals attracts them out the caves.

This game has always made me giggle when it comes to how they created it. On one hand you have to give it to them for making crazy looking enemies to fight. And then stuff to do. Things to build, things to collect, etc. Then when they finished all of that they had to sit around and go "How do we put it all together?" I think the devs sometime during development had a crazy shift in creative ideas. SOMEONE on the dev team, perhaps the "Writer" played Doom Eternal and thought "hey, this s*it's cool". So instead of continuing the investigation story, they shifted to... You're now Doomguy because reasons. Kill Demons (or fight demons). Here's a golden shotgun. Demonic rituals. And a wheelie that can jump 2000ft into the air using the glider launcher. The story and creative vision makes about as much sense as a drunken sailor talking about mermaids.

I thought the original concept of being a merc on a rescue mission was quite cool and a good enough obscure backstory since you’re there, your stranded and you’re gonna face things you’d never have imagined. I think they had their priorities right when designing the game. If you had the limited budget, would you have split it in any other way? The story is really just an add-on to the game. Optional if you may - and they knew. As others in the comments said, it is not about the big picture, that is just background noise, it is about the little details you find throughout the world to piece some things together while focusing on survival and not getting eaten by cannibals. And Mansions, countless mansions with palisades. :D

great video. i for my part love the "wing it" nature of the writing of SOTF; theres just something to it that catches me, i remember the first time i saw the spaceship and was like "okay what the fuck this is cool asf" (might just be my inner child tho idk xDDD). imo these two are the best survival games made in the past 10 years, even if the story is a little "off" sometimes, i love that for some reason. endnight is just always in for a suprise XD

actually in the first game it's implied that anyone else that survived the plane crash was killed by the cannibals, you can go and find all of them and it's one of the side quests (if that counts as a side quest?)

I felt like in the first game, even though there were ancient alien civilizations and resurrection machines and crazy mutant monsters, it still somehow felt kind of grounded? Maybe "grounded" isn't the word, I don't know, but I think that despite there being a lot of mystery it was still a fairly simple story with easy to understand lore and context about what was going on. You also didn't NEED the collectible notes to get the story, like you could just only do the essential story stuff and still get it. But this game's story is just batshit insane. I've actually sat here for five minutes trying to type a sentence that truly conveys how insane it is and I can't do it. I want to say it was way too ambitious but I think that would imply there was at least some big idea they were reaching for, and I don't even think they had that. It wasn't "well there are some wild ideas here but the execution is just sloppy", it was "the writers literally had no idea what the fuck they wanted to do."

Well Timmy went back to try and find a cure, which in the end wasn't successful. However, he brought back something that did help him, at least for a time. Guessing this ore has some other kinds of secrets tied to it that now brings up a 3rd installment to the series, hopefully also answering all the questions that were raise playing Sons Of The Forest.

I played Sons of the Forest a little before the full story good thing I never payed attention I thought you were playing as Timmy as an adult, who managed to enroll in a team assigned to explore and research the 2nd Island, Either as a researcher or security (explainign the tattoo) Him being the only one to have a connection with Virginia since he is also half mutant. "Kelvin Fahrenheit" (as I call him) becoming your "pet". As an ironic twist, that mutants adopt a human. But also thought he was your best friend from childhood or even the friend tho got you into this role and opportunity....I dunno. By not paying attention, I came with a better story than the actual story

I don’t think Virginia is the same one from the previous game because I’d assume Timmy is at least 25 which would mean the last game would have had to happen at least a decade and a half prior, so she wouldn’t be only 20 as her file indicates.

I thought they did a pretty good job with the sequel, both in gameplay and story. It was obvious from the first game there were scifi supernatural elements incoming and its interesting on how they expanded on them. The devs are consistent with unconventional twists. The way you build bases and craft horrendous abominations to progress, and the story having these huge reveals and mysterious moments that only lead to more questions. Going from ancient alien obelisks in the first game that lead to the spawn of horrific mutant creatures to a giant alien cube in the second game that alters those around it (or something) and connects with parallel dimensions isn't that far of a stretch in retrospect.

If I play the forest just by grinding to make a super huge and protected base, and I don't super give a shit about exploring, am I still playing right, or do the devs not really expect you to sit and stay in one area. Because I'm more of a "hunker downer", but I feel like the game wants more from me. I'll explore rarely, but if my character gets hurt you can bet I'll return to base and just chill for a long while. Usually I'll get full bone armor, take a danger walk, and return until I'm back to full. I definitely am not interested in finishing the game though. Is that unintended?

you can beat the game without ever building a base. i did it. there are camp sites all over the place, use them to save and rest. they are also in the caves. without looking anything up i was able to beat the game in about 9 hours by just constantly exploring and saving/resting at the camp sites. you can do this in the second one as well. alternatively, you can pretty much live indefinitely in the forest and build a nice big house. with the artifact at your house you will never get attacked there. only after beating the game i built a nice house and planted the artifact there so it doesnt get destroyed

1 thing that I wish they would of done better was the "boss battle" at the end. They give you all this ammo and meds then show him breaking out of the ground and destroying a helicopter. Only for the battle to last like 2 minutes and the dude die in like 4-5 c4 hits. It felt like all the build up lead to an underwelming fight especialy for how much they give you right before.

There is 3 artifacts in the forest 1, you forgot about the one you get if you dont become a murderer and drop a plane, its the artifact in the boat, the one that cauues agression or make the cannibals passive.
