The version I buy of this battle (and I've watched actual DOCUMENTARIES about this battle) is that the end result was essentially a stalemate. Both sides got HEAVILY mauled and suffered IMMENSE casualties, the reason for which is because Attila delayed the battle until the late afternoon, meaning that when the fighting was at its heaviest, it was getting very dark. At one point it DID look like Aetius was going to finally crush Attila, to the point where he created a funeral pyre for himself and was planning to burn himself alive so that he would die undefeated, but right at that moment, Aetius's chief ally, Theoderic of the Visigoths, was killed, so the Huns started to get their morale back a little. But by then, it was pitch black, akin to the battle in the American Civil War where Stonewall Jackson was mortally injured by friendly fire, so Aetius had to disengage. The next morning, the Huns were in possession of their baggage train, but the Romans and their allies were in possession of the battlefield. Technically, this meant that the Romans won the battle, but it could not be called a TOTAL victory, because Attila was still alive! As such, he and the Huns were able to escape. What is more, instead of pursuing them and actually ENSURING a total victory by destroying Attila there and then, Aetius let him go, for reasons that will forever remain unknown.
@seanweston29073 жыл бұрын
Aetius never disengaged it was Atilla who did, with the Roman ally cavalry smashing into atillas left causing his German troops to route and in fear of being encircled atilla retreated and Aetius had to stop his allies from giving chase which would have ended atillas reign early even possibly taking his life rather than be killed
@seanweston29073 жыл бұрын
It was a decisive Roman victory which secured it’s borders until its collapse
@thealmightygonk26442 жыл бұрын
I would argue that it was a complete victory for the Romans, the Visigoths are leaderless, Attila has been temporarily defeated, and when he comes back he will be able to keep the other Germanic tribes in check.
@soedirmanfighter53192 жыл бұрын
Greatest general as he was, Aetius realized that it was Attila and his army that keeps the Germanic hordes from directing their focus to Western Roman Empire. He *needs* Attila, as the presence of Attila and his empire contributed to survival of Roman Empire. He just needs to gave Attila and his Huns harsh lessons, so they would go to Germanic Tribes instead Roman Empire. But the death of Attila become the unexpected end of Hunnic Empire, and thus the Germanic hordes starts directing their focus to Roman Empire again. Either that, or he was just tired, lol.

You are aware that the Battle of the Catalaunian plains was a Roman victory, Right? Attila was forced to withdraw from Gaul. Despite managing to Return to raid the western empire, The huns never posed the same threat they once did, And Attila died two years after the battle. I'm just going to assume this battle wasn't mean to be historical.

@gamelot120936 жыл бұрын
Well it was a mostly barbarian army allied with the Romans. By that stage the Western Roman Empire couldnt afford to field big armies because of the loss of North Africa which was the main source of tax revenue, and the rich were allowed to buy exemptions from military service, and people in cities/towns werent allowed to join the army. Atilla invaded Italy the following year and sacked Milan and wiped Aquelia off the face of the earth (its refugees founded Venice) so Im sceptical that this battle was as decisive as some believe.

Donald lisberg You did see the final line of text at the very end of the video, right? It explicitly says, "The battle is considered a controversial Roman victory."

Wait. Never heard there was a night battle. I was sure Atius let Attila go because he needed to keep a common enemy to hold his alliance. Attila on his part had delayed the start of the battle to 1PM precisely because his forces might start to lose and nightfall would save them as it did. This cartoon over dramatizes and overuses 🔥 fire

This battle served its purpose, to stop Attila-so, it is a strategic and decisive Roman victory! Furthermore, this battle marks the descend of the Hunnic people as a threat...about 20 years later there won't be anywhere in Europe!

The huns were still in eastern europe and central asia. Ernak would expand the empire to include the lands of Yadegard of Persia as a vassal. The saxons were still called huns even to this day as a derogatory term from the time they were huns. Hun is a political term, not an ethnic one. The avars still called them huns until the bulgar turks destroyed them completely. fterall the avars were subjects of the Hephthalites according to the romans until Gokturk conquest.

@@Platanis2008 absolutely, the Ostrogothic empire of Ermanaric was incorporated. Remember Hun is a political term like American. Mexican American, Chinese American, etc. however it wouldn’t be recorded in Roman sources due to poor understanding of the nomads, seeing them like a bunch of war bands than Khaganates. It doesn’t help that they are the only recorded khaganate to use semi nomadic peoples like the Germans and Slavs which confused scholars as to the political nature of the Huns. It’s like if the Mongols assimilated the Iroquois or Cherokee or Wampanoag.

Hhhh yeah that's rather right , but it takes two massive and devastating armies to achieve that 😉😊 beside , the visigoth king got killed in the battlefield and that battle in a way or other was the beginning of the end for the western roman empire and Attila had the ability to conquer the whole empire but the pope told him smth no one knows about so he could have simply walked away 🤔
@imperator78286 жыл бұрын
shang Massive and devastating armies? What are you on about lad? Stop lying to yourself, the west was weak and had been fighting countless barbarians for years. There are many other reasons for its decline and fall, such as political instability, overinflation and too much reliance on foederati troops. If you're gonna blame a battle, then the battle of the frigidus played a much more important role. The western Roman empire fought against the Eastern Empire and lost most of its veteran legions. Combine that with the constant barbarian invasions, they were given no chance to recover. Attila had NO ability whatsoever to conquer the whole empire nor did the pope exist yet. You're being very anachronistic. There was no catholicism or orthodoxy therefore no pope. Also the empire was too large for attila to conquer and keep. The huns were shit at administration and organization hence why their empire fell immediately after the death of attila.
