For those at home, the low volume is due to Osc A. For most (but not all) Operator algorithms, if Osc A is turned down you won’t hear anything regardless of the other oscillators. So depending on which algorithm you use, it may be best to leave Osc A up full and unmapped.

@@Lephrenic You made perfect sense. I was screaming at the screen everytime I saw Osc A at minimum, obvs not on the parallel algo's.

Just tried this with Drift and the sounds which this has produced is powerful and very little effort. This has just opened up an whole other level of sound design. Simple...But...Effective. Thanks Ned

that's why i put a parameter randomizer in every one of my plugins these days. there's much potential in just getting inspired by chance. it's incredible how rarely the random sounds suck in this synth

Great video. I really like how the sounds kept on evolving as you added more and more variables. Surprising it worked so well on the kick drum too, really loved the 1st randomised kick.

Damn, so nice! Never gonna use ableton presets again. Even created a very Sitar-like sound with this by clicking on random! Keep it up! THX

This is a lot easier than composing a symphony sheet score with probability instructions Which reminds me, prob some Foley of rolling dice is appropriate, say with grain delay. And someone shitting themselves at a casino SFX. Thnx for the video, dope methods and very amusing

This is a great idea for a tutorial, Ned. There is a long lost Max 4 Live randomization plugin that is pretty defunct these days but does attempt to randomize any Ableton or Max instrument parameter with some mapping capability. I think yours is a better solution now, and of course has a veritably unlimited palette given how one can group groups of macros, adjust their potential ranges, and could also consider using the modulation randomization of the expression editor in this chain as well. It would be cool to figure out how to randomize the potential ranges of effect separately as well. As well.

I wish we could assign a control to the variations, tho. :/ I want to make a bunch and randomize between those. I guess I could do it with clips, but I'm a bit tired of follow actions right now. :) There's so much we can do now, but still I find walls to hit. One of these days, there won't be any walls left, right? I call this 'MMT-8 Syndrome.' "Nope! Out of memory, mate!" But...but...I had just gotten to the best bits! AW, SHUCKS. Currently experiencing it with Expression Control, which is messed-up right now.

Seems strange how certain buttons remain un-mapable....... Seems like such a simple oversight this far into Ableton's existence. You can't map the random button to LFO or similar devices either. It would be really nice if you could save midi & key mapping at device level too...... I've just built a random rack with all the various drum synth modules and It's a massive pain to have to re-map a dozen 'random' buttons to the same key every time I want to drag it into a session. .......I'd kill for 'chance groups' in the piano roll too, but that's another complaint entirely.

You can map a midi cc to the variations, then use a midi controller in the form of an LFO to switch them.

@@NedRush I just wanna map the LFOs to it, but this is a workaround I wasn't aware of, as I don't use CC for much anymore these days, just hit Map buttons. Thanks!

I've been making these but my operator didn't work as well as yours, I did make a really good multi effect based on camel space though, the random is the best part (as it was on camel plugs).
