The way the wire kept the character of Avon Barksdale kind of a mystery was brilliant. They made him a presence without really to much screen time initially. In effect Stringer was the focal point in the first season until the end. But once we got to see Avon after his release from prison the dude was an absolute tour de force. I mean this guy was so cool, so raw, so unbelievably Baltimore it was mind boggling. Seriously that character made the show in my opinion. Shocking screen presence. Still my favorite character and there were a bunch on that show.

Just a sec. This clip is a triumph of sound design. Avon and his trucks stereo are like Jaws here, with his theme announcing his proximity and giving you a sense of dread and awe subconsciously. The echo off the buildings, the bass thumping when he’s barely close enough to hear, all of this was carefully crafted. It even has a “we need a bigger boat” moment at the end. Every person who worked on the Wire was great and firing on all cylinders every day. The tone even changes at the end to tell us he’s gotten away (Doppler effect). Master class in audio, this segment.

American cars are so fucking massive and these huge streets have like 2-3 people on them just sat there and no traffic except one drug lord and a few dipshit cops, idk is it like that everywhere or just Baltimore.
@KINGDAVID2307 жыл бұрын
its a good ass vehicle. I owned one lasted years i wrecked it. Avon was in a Ford though

Notice the 1st season had those crazy camera angles they ditched in the later seasons. Was probably some new age cinematography shit in 2002 lol.

Either Avon turned his music down once he lost them and then turned it back up at the end just to flex, or he had it blaring the whole time and didn’t even care. I don’t know which is cooler, but both are hilarious

Marlo had the right type of stomach for the game, but Avon is that nigga to me. He much more charismatic. He is immersed with the community, camouflaged so to speak, yet he is arguably the sole most important person in those hoods during his reign. He is humble and wise enough to navigate West Baltimore as innately as breathing.

they need a new show like this that focuses a little more on the criminal side of things sort of like breaking bad.
@WithoutRemorse1210 жыл бұрын
Complex crime dramas are harder to produce. They require patience while the writers develop character and world building. Generally have to focus less on the cat mouse game between cops and criminals.

indeed....the show got pretty boring every time it just focused on the cops
@laphonz10 жыл бұрын
***** It was boring to *you*. You just didn't have the attention span to try and understand the arcs that involved politics and the police system. You are probably the type of viewer who are only pleased with action packed sequences, instead of the ones that settle you down and teach you. I recommend you to watch the series over again and try to understand the genius of this show throughout all of the arcs.
@Mydickisaweapon9 жыл бұрын
the cops,and politicians (and the actors who played them) and all the scenes with them were all boring...and the show was awesome every time the criminals were on the screen...class dismissed

There’s something genius in this scene about how they recorded this audio-an eeriness to the flute part reverberating off the acoustics of the neighborhood doubled by the uncanny shift in pitch when Avon drives away from the camera. It adds to the unsettling feeling that you’re in his domain now.

Avon was a smart dude he ran lights and everything just to get a perspective of what they wanted and why they were following him and him running the lights and them not pulling him over proved his point they was tryna see where he would go
