Buju Banton 100% correct. Agencies could give a damn about some gangsters killing each other in a street war. But killing a state senator? A public official? You will have the governments full attention. Not local police, Feds. And the Feds are respected, bc they don’t lose. What’s the Feds conviction rate, something like 98.7%? You don’t go pissing them off cause you lost a couple grand on a stupid deal. Bad business.

@@KtotheG Killing Clay Davis was not the problem. Slim could have easily dropped him with help from Stringer. The problem is that a more skilled person was needed to kill Clay in a way that didn't lead back to Avon and Stringer. Poisoning Clay in a restaurant requires an elaborate plan with multiple co-conspirators (the restaurant not wanting any part of if of course). And even that would have led a trail of evidence that would be hard for Stringer to elude (especially if the Wire detectives were included on the case).

Actually, you can. You don't think politicians are gangsta? Remember the conversation between Michael and Kay in The Godfather? Kay: "But presidents and senators don't kill people, Michael." Michael: "Oh, now who's being naive, Kay." GWB left plenty of bodies in his wake to maintain his power... and look how Trump became president, by colluding with the Russians and fixing the election, then firing everybody who attempted to investigate him. Back in the 1800s and shit, there was even a duel between two US Congressmen. I forget who, though. I want to say Andrew Jackson and somebody. You can look it up. One thing I love about Avon is that he’s always calculating. He could’ve rolled up on Stringer and Slim when Stringer asked for Avon, but he laid back in the shadows and waited for Stringer to say what he needed to say to Slim Charles. A true king never reveals himself when it is not needed or necessary, he waited for Stringer to be emotionally angry and then he came in-“Ayo, I think Slim gonna have to sit this one out, boss.“ Avon is a true king, a true boss.

Maverick The Day of the Jackal is novel and film from the 1970s. It's about a highly skilled international hitman who is hired by a terrorist group to kill the French prime minister. Avon is basically saying that it would take an extremely elite assassin to kill a high profile politician like Davis, which is obviously not practical. The reason I find the line so amusing is that you would not normally expect the average inner city gangster to make a reference to an old political thriller like The Day of the Jackal.

He was reading in prison as well in season 2. He most likely read more than Stringer for that period of time too. He realized prison was no thing for him. He owns the game in or out of prison and is comfortable with either. He knew who he was. Stringer got torn every which way to be legit and to go hard but you cant make criminals reform. Because you can't go to the cops. That means violence for all the illegal things. The streets were the point.
@Tadaia2 жыл бұрын
This is one of the best scenes in the entire series. All the Wood Harris and Idris Elba scenes were absolutely epic. I still laugh even now when people try to justify Stringer’s narcissistic delusions and his woeful lack of self-awareness. Avon summed him up well in an earlier scene. “I bleed red. You bleed green.” “You know what you are? A man without a country.” “You ain’t hard enough for this over here and maybe… just maybe not smart enough for that over there.” Good looks and nice suits aside, Stringer got played by nearly everyone he came in contact with… Clay Davis, his contractors, Prop Joe… Even Marlo was laughing at him posturing like a big shot financial advisor and talking down to him about a co-op and how he was going to help him with his finances. Marlo right after that meeting: “Yo Chris… tell my people to tool up.” Lol And yet instinctively, without ever even meeting him, Avon (always very self aware) knew EXACTLY who and what Marlo was. There IS NO legitimizing or elimination of violence in a very ILLEGAL, highly volatile and highly profitable drug enterprise, regardless of how many co-ops and commissions you organize or how many legitimate businesses you try and launder your money thru. It’s going to always come down to its foundation… gangsters in the streets, or as Avon puts it... “dem cornahs”. Pablo Escobar didn’t become the world’s richest and most powerful drug lord simply because he was a good businessman. It’s because that fool was willing to kill indiscriminately and even take down an entire commercial flight killing dozens of innocents just to get at one man. He was a ruthless sociopathic killer, as have been countless gangsters and so-called businessmen of illegal enterprises since the Prohibition era and beyond. Stringer was a fantastic character, portrayed immortally by Elba, that drew a lot of polarized opinions. But IMO he was also bereft of character, code, loyalty and an arrogant asshole that strayed well beyond his purview.

The dubious, but very funny concept of the 'Sunday Morning Truce' aside... ultimately, the Barksdales will kill anyone - man, woman, or child - player or civilian - who threatens their business. That's not to say that Avon didn't exhibit moments of humanity though. Letting Cutty go, and acknowledging Cutty's courage in admitting that he couldn't do the gangster life anymore was one such example. Would Stringer have made a similar decision..? I think maybe not!

The most impressive thing about this scene is the fact that someone like Avon has watched Day of the Jackal.

I just love how the song "Locked up" is playing in the background. It reflects how Stringer is locked in a world that he can't get out. That affect on him lead him to make an highly dishonorable move by setting his best friend, Avon, to the police. Stringer was full of flaws but he was too self-centered to realize and fix his mistakes as a temporary leader and a so called "Business man".

When Stringer told Avon Clay Davis took "our money", he expected Avon to get as mad as he was, but it didn't work. String was a master manipulator and schemer but that didn't work on Avon.

Davis stole $250K brother. Absolute peanuts to Avon who was probably pulling in dozens of millions a year.

@@eternalyfeful Avon was a drug king worth millions in legit clean money(he laundered the drug money through Orlando's, the funeral parlor and his Druid Park apartments). He wouldn't care too much about a powerful state senator stealing $250K. Plus, he cared way more about his name and rep than the money.

@@SelectiveApathy82 yup. The money was just a byproduct of the work he did in the streets. But the streets is what mattered to Avon.

"Naw you business man you don't wanna get all gangsta wild with it and shit right? What I tell you about playing away games." One of the best quotes of the series from Avon. Stringer was playing a game in an arena he had no business trying to play, and got hosed because he didn't know the arena. Great sports analogy by the writers. This scene is money.
