I just put a 70s dodge external regulator on my squarebody 12 valve to use the Cummins alternator . Simple to install , saves money

At what voltage will this run? I don’t have grid heaters I’m worried if it’ll over charge I recently installed a transpo voltage regulator the one that requires screwing 4 different wires and it charges but like barely to 12.3- 12.8 when driving around not sure if it’s good it’s my first dodge truck

This is self igniting so the board in the regular handles it. I have been lot of these with no issue. My first gen sit for months and is always good

So if I have paid attention there is only one wire connected to the big stud that goes to the battery!? And maybe a extra ground wire to the block for security!? No wires connected to the contact point on the regulator needed?

If you want to do it to a 99 engine you want to use the older alternator. Not the unit with the plug on it

Most of the time guys do it when the pcm dies or the engine is going into a swap . But you can do it with a working one

Hey Rob . I just did this conversion on a new 1992 alternator and have the factory ground wire to the block and my hot wire hooked up and it doesn't seem to be charging. I even hooked up a jumper wire from the battery neg. to the mounting screw on the alternator and still no charging. Do you have any suggestions ? Thanks

these are better brushes , i am sure you could make the stock style work but i like the upgrade

The stock brushes do not work with this one-wire regulator. Holes are too far apart.

Would this work on a 1997 dodge ram 3500 5.9 12v it has the same one charge wire, however I have a question you don’t bolt on the stock harness? Just the charge wire? No ground?

It will charge 14 ish. With this you just want a good ground from alt to block and main power wire

It should if its the voltmeter style. If it is a 89-90 with the ammeter it may not depending on how you hook it up.

I just did the install on my 12v. Keep in mind the engine has been sitting for years. Im just now finishing up my project. Install was easy. After i connected my one wire and a ground to the battery the heat dissapating fins started to warm up. Looking to get a mew alternator. Do you trust the ebay "denso" reman alternator or should i go through a parts store. Any preferred brands?

I got a new alternator, swapped the brushes and self excitor into the alternator. Once i plug my old alternator connector on the back of the alternator the heat dissipator fins begin warming up when the engine is off just sitting. Should i just run a cable from back of alternator to battery? Alternator is grounded to battery to ground tab on back of alternator.

I used a Denso style reman unbranded from amazon or ebay. It burned up the alternator. I just opted for the 200 amp alternator w tac signal wire from PA Performance. I used the wrong alternator im sure. Just went w the easier fix PA Performance 1 wire w tac signal wire.

I tried this and it didn’t work. I bought the amazon 12v oil pump for black diesel you recommended too. It sucks over heats and stops working after about 10 gallons of pumping. Everything you have recommended was a failure. Safe to say I’m done watching your videos
