That's easily a 75 mph stretch of interstate if I ever saw one. Conventional wisdom would tell you that if that many motorists are being cited for "speeding," then the 65 mph limit is artificially low and is only in place for the sole purpose of revenue generation, not safety. By the way, the only thing speed kills on an open interstate such as this one is your wallet. However, poor driving skills and inattentiveness does by all means kill.

Right now the speed limit on most rural highways is around 65-70. Most drivers go around 75-80 (10-15 mph over the speed limit). If we raise the speed limit 10 mph, then the speeds of other drivers will also go up, increasing the risk of an accident happening. If speed limits are raised, then they have to be stricter

personally I'd rather just get rid of speed limits entirely so you can drive as fast as you want on the freeway. however, the more important part is the public safety benefit that would come. speed limits were originally for a good purpose, but now that they've become a revenue collecting tool instead of an important rule, cops often just camp on dangerous streets and hand out tickets instead of fixing the problem. without that ability, municipalities would be forced to fix the dangerous streets. this would strike a nice balance between speeders who want to drive like they're running from someone and speed limit karens who don't want their kid to be hit by a car

Ok I agree anything over 100mph warrants an immediate ticket, but speed limits on highways in the US are usually way too slow. In comparison in cities they should be lowered. In European countries speed limits are on average higher. In Poland the standard speed limit on divided highways is 87 mph. The police also let you speed about 10 mph before ticketing you. The fatality rate? Exactly the same in the US, although admittingly drivers in Poland do receive more training. You'd think the country with "freedom" and with insane distances would have the faster speed limits.

We need to update our "speeding" laws. If the weather is clear and traffic is light and you are driving a half way decent car, then driving 100 mph is no big deal. 100 mile per hour speed limits will then become antiquated as vehicle technology and the design of our roads improve. here's my wild concept: get rid of speed limits entirely. this will remove a source of revenue farming for municipalities and they will be forced to either stop bothering people who drive fast or fix their dangerous and terribly designed streets. about the only issue this might cause is access for emergency vehicles, which could be provided through automatic gates that give them direct access from roads to streets and some more automatic gates that block cars but let pedestrians, cyclists and emergency vehicles through, plus some automatic bollards that let them use bicycle paths and crazy good suspension that lets them drive over intentionally rough surfaces and artificial potholes. this would strike a balance between chronic speed limit breakers and chronic speed limit karens

@@fireflames3639 maybe cars that do less than 40 meters per second (90 miles per hour) could have a mandatory slow driver light installed on the back and be legally required to take the right lane, whereas cars that do less than 30 meters per second (67.5 miles per hour) would be banned from the freeway unless no alternative route exists, and in that case there would be a secondary road next to the freeway. I used meters per second for the official thresholds because I feel like meters per second is a more useful velocity unit than miles per hour since miles per hour is only useful for measuring your estimated time of arrival, whereas meters per second can tell you how outlandish your speed is for the current space you're in

@SafeSpeeder The real reason people speed is because nearly all Speed Limits are set too low, in my home country Ukraine legal speed limit outside of cities are 80mph-130km and there is less car accidents in Ukraine then the U.S . Those people who are cited for Speeding are involved in less traffic accidents than drivers who obey the Limit, I got my license in the States 7 years ago and I got only into one accident but it wasn't even my fault and I always speed never got into accident while driving 85mph in 60zone. In Germany or Italy, drivers who routinely travel 100MPH or more are involved in far fewer accidents than those who travel 75MPH or less. Why? Because faster drivers are much more alert and aware of their surroundings. They are not fooling with the radio or involved in a conversation with passengers. One of the facts Governments and the Insurance Industry keep secret is, only slightly over 35% of accidents are caused by someone driving below the speed limit or hogging left lane. If an accident is caused because a driver runs a stop sign or fails to yield right-of-way, speed is always reported as a factor. Regular Italian highways that are free they have speed limits 140km. So why all Europe has higher speed limits or unlimited speed limits and only one U.S. state Texas has the highest speed limit because it's big money for government and insurance companies to lie for people that fast speed kills.
