NFS 2 with the 3dfx patch or NFS 3 on the PC with a 3dfx card were awesome times back in those days! 2 things not mentioned in this review: 1. In NFS 3 on the PC it is possible to create/import custom cars and do wacky stuff with that. 2. The LAN multiplayer aspects of those games on the PC. Up to 8 players were seriously good times! Back in those days it was one of many games like the original Half Life, Counter Strike 1.6, Command & Conquer/Red Alert & Starcraft that my friends and I played at a lot of LAN parties!

@@tristanholley7141 Look, I do prefer glide mode, I've played it in Glide mode and also in D3D mode, I really didn't see much of a difference. In fact if anything it looks a little worse in glide because a voodoo didn't have good fps with anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering at 800x600 when compared to a GeForce or Radeon. Ironically, Glide mode now looks the best on modern systems with a glide wrapper and fan patch implemented, especially since the glide wrapper can convert any game to native 32bit color.

Both versions were my childhood. I hold them in such high regard, that I find it hard to even pick which one is superior. The PSX version will always hold a special place in my heart though because it was a true companion when I was going through a rough patch in my life - I'd be sitting in my home, dead of night, just blasting around the secret tracks in the CLK-GTR. I loved this game, but I always saw it as a PC game. The PC version looked way better, and actually had a huge modding scene as DLC cars were actually a thing, even in 1998, and people figured out how to model their own cars and easily provide them for people to download (which also worked with Porsche Unleashed). This is probably a massive void of lost media, I remember stuff like the flying DeLorean, Herbie the Love Bug, and all sorts of legendary cars as fan DLC for NFS III.

Agreed. This was one of very few PS1 racers that really resonated with me (preferring Sega's approach generally) but this was epic. I remember when I was working in a game shop at the time and me and my colleaguespent a whole afternoon playing this - way better than Gran Turismo. Super fun, super frenetic, fantastic performance from the PS1 hardware Tight controls meant you were able to absolutely push the limits and feel like you were right on the edge of losing it. Other thing I distinctly remember is that this game supported the short lived DualAnalogue controller (the one with the concave control sticks and the precursor to the Dual Shock controller) believe it meant the controls were like an RC car i.e. one stick controlling acceleration and braking, the other steering. Worked really well. Also the tracks were some of the better designed tracks from a non Sega or Namco racer. A true gem!

Cool Story: this game was the first 3d racing game that me and a friend ever played. His family was celebrating his grandma anniversary and invited me to the party as well, we started playing NFS Hot Pursuit on his brand new PS1 but we were stuck taking turns in a certain race which was too difficulty for both of us. As soon as my turn came (for the 20th or so time) his family asked for his help to clean up the dishes, while he was there, i managed to beat the race, and soon i was waiting for the game to save, the lights went out on the city, the game failed to save, i told him i truly managed to beat that stage, but he didn't believe me, that was simply too hard for him to believe.

This game is a thing a beauty. My memories are a bit jaded since I played it a bit late (in 2000 on up) on a Pentium 2 PC with a proper graphics card. Playing the Playstation version later? It's an embarrassment graphically. It always annoyed me that the cops are basically just cardboard boxes with lights. BUT... I will give the Playstation version this: the GAMEPLAY is there. It plays BEAUTIFULLY. It just LOOKS like pixelated hot garbage. lol But... at the same time? It STILL looks FAR better than the VAST majority of racing games on the console at the time.

This was one of my first FAV racing games ever. The psx version was nothing I would ever play though. I only had it on PC with a 3Dfx Voodoo with modded cars after a time. By far one of my favorite racing games of my youth. The PSX version isnt anything to write home about. If my friends showed me that, "while there was already GT2 out" I would have shown them my car mod manager with a mcClaren that almost crashed my PC every time I loaded the car because of it's polygon count, and they would always sh*t their pants. The PSX version is terrible, and you obviously know that. Don't be a shill. Back in the day, the PC version was and always will be the best version of this game, along with the Porcha Unleashed. Don't give more credit to a sub par console with Subpar graphics, and sub par everything. This is a shitty port of a great game. Love your Saturn vids, but the PSX version of this game is garbage. Sry

Aong with Tekken 3, this was one of my two first PS1 games ever. I had a lot of fun with both of them as a teen and love them till today, dearly. They also still play quite well, despite their age :)

There was a cheat code I used a lot in this game that made it so when you honked your horn, it flipped all cars up in the air in front of you. It was hilarious.

Awesome video!! I agree with everthing. I also had a PlayStation and a computer at the same time, but I used the computer for, well, computer stuff and the only videogames I played were the C&C RA types of games. I was playing the NFS2 and later NFS3 when someone lend me the NFS3 for computers. And everything was just as you tell it. And, yeah, totally agree that there are no more games like that since years. Last year I borrow from someone the NFS Rivals and I still can't believe how can exist a racing game with no manual transmission.

Amazing game. Rented it one weekend and fell in love. Probably rented it 6 times before I got the game for my birthday.

Something a lot of people dont mention is the use of rumble. This game had one of the best use of it onnany game Ive played. I remember how it would rumble slightly different on different types of road.

This game was the approach of the apex, High Stakes was the highest point and anything from Porsche Unleashed and beyond the series went just flat out down hill.

I agree. Underground made me all confused because all of a sudden NFS was now about story and driving a Honda Civic? Where's the Ferraris, Lambos, and Corvettes? I still prefer 3 over High Stakes (mostly because it's a little more wacky than the latter, and has a fixed 3rd person camera mode) but still all these games in the late 90s were great.

Except NFS Hot Pursuit 2 (ONLY the PS2 version).

I agree totally with the only exception being Hot Pursuit 2 the PS2 version. The original 4 games on PS1 though, they were Need For Speed's soul that I feel has long since been lost

I like the game engine/physics of NFS III better, but HS is better in that the cops positions are randomized + more tracks

@@captain3186 Hot Pursuit 2 is ok-ok. However , just like Hot Pursuit 2010. It's just not Need For Speed 3: Hot Pursuit. Same with Need For Speed : High Stakes, and Porsche Unleashed for PC. I'll give Need For Speed Underground 1 and 2 some credit . While Need For Speed Heat. I'll put it with the rest ive mentioned with High Stakes and etc. Most Wanted and others are too overrated .

Need for Speed 3 on PC was amazing at the time.... went from playing old games like Test Drive, Stunt Drivin, then the original NFS to this was outstanding. Never owned a Playstation until after playing the PC version and thought it was trash...actually sold the Playstation soon after... Total PC master-racer back then as the only games I couldn't really get on the PC were the 3D fighters.

I still have my original copy for the PC from 1998 if you can believe it. I PLAYED THE HELL OUT OF THIS GAME.

I remember someone posting NFS3 for PC on the dorm network (which was an unlimited free-for-all) back in the day. Video and music content all was stripped out of course. It was a pretty significant improvement over NFS2.

I still play this game to this day on PlayStation and its PlayStation 2 sequel. Two of my favorite racing games of all time in this franchise and all around. They really did a great job. This game is still very challenging.

It's surprising, but PC and PlayStation versions of this same game felt quite differently. In the PS version, the physics and steering feel easier and more arcade-like. When driving down sloped surfaces, the car doesn't go airborne like in the PC version but stays glued to the road, which makes maneuvering much easier (this is noticeable in the channels on Aquatica track for instance). However, the biggest difference is in how the cops behave. In the PlayStation version, they closely chase the player's car, often bumping into it and trying to perform PIT maneuvers. In the PC version, the cops are always far behind and only catch up when the player crashes and comes to a stop.

My brother and I used to play Hide and Seek in split screen mode. My favorite hiding place was to pull into a driveway face the garage and enter bumper cam.

Dude you are the only other person i know who thinks that this is the best Need for Speed game besides me. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE NFS3, all the games after this with the exception of of Most Wanted for PS2, ARE GARBAGE. Great video SLX. If you get a chance I just put up my review of Shenmue 1 for DC, would you be kind enough to check it out

I love this game and it's music, especially the rock tunes.
