Robin! What a lovely video. The excitement in your voice alone remotivates me!! And the way you looked at your bookshelf and said "I LOVE THEM" hahaha I actually laughed out loud. Definitely relate to that feeling. Also it really touched me when you mentioned wanting to return to some previous homes especially to make peace with them. It's nice to know someone else feels that way. Traveling entails so many different thrilling experiences, the good AND the not so good, especially when you settle there for more than just a little while. It's almost impossible not to be caught up in the chaos and stress and emotion that sometimes is left unresolved because we're constantly on the move to the next adventure. Like magical story books that have to be left with the bookmark in the middle (hopefully an OK analogy lol). There are a couple places for me that sometimes I even cringe at when remembering because of my situation at the time and the person I was because of it. And that shouldn't be the case at all. Anyway, it was just really nice to hear your input on some very relatable topics and a big thank you for inspiring me every. single. time. Great Robin. A very valuable video. Personally motivation is something that doesn't worry me. My way for those that may be interested is that I give in to " the lack of it " My enthusiasm is always there so I just lean back into it because I know it will return and I will see it with fresh eyes again. Like meeting up with an old friend . You might think that being 68 now I ought to speed up with less years ahead of me , but that would be a very silly way to view the learning process. I'll enjoy it whilst I'm alive !!!

I don't feel i'm a good language learner but i keep trying because as you said the "goal" is too great and this keeps me going to become fluent in a language.I always look for better methods for learning and keep going...hopefully one day it will pay off.

Thank you a lot man. Great video. What I most do to motivate myself is to search new approaches to learn a new language and estimate how much time I'll spend doing what I'm doing til become the speaker I want to be.

Thank you so much, Robin, I've taken English up for almost one year, it's amazing the amount of stuff I have already done with the language I've learned, writing my own story, watch Tv shows, doing what I love with English, but for some reason that God knows why, I've lost a little bit of this "fire" since last month, I really don't know why, but this video, it was the part that was missing to me... thank you man I had some ideas to solve this problem thanks to you

Cool that you're giving Finnish a go. Despite it's difficulty, it's quite consistent. I started learning it as a teenager. It set off an interest for me in all the languages that are spoken around the Baltic Sea. And that's quite a few.

I enjoyed visiting coffee shops in Stockholm - in fact, I enjoyed visiting a lot of different shops in Stockholm! It never occurred to me to learn any Swedish in advance, and I regretted it later. You would greatly enjoy that city and I hope you get to have some wonderful conversations (and coffees) there!

Actually, the fact that coffee is a running thing in your videos makes me think. I'm a Starbucks employee. Theoretically, I could transfer to a branch in Japan if I wanted to. After all, I'm a Japanese learner with plans to live and work in the country as a fiction writer in the future. The only thing holding me back is that I'm a poor 22 year old college student (granted, the school is online and Starbucks pays for it as long as I keep my grades up, but moving overseas would be too much pressure at this point, even without the...erm, "global conditions"). I have ordered a Japanese-English bilingual book straight from Japan, and I'm still waiting for it to arrive. So I guess I'll try my hand at reading it in the same way you have once it comes. Any tips or techniques that would be handy?

a pimsleur japanese subscription ($15 a month right now) will help you tremendously. Pimsleur is repetitive, but it will have you speaking like a native in no time

As someone with a similar path and temperament and 13 years in the future (I'm 35), all I can say is -- do it. When you're young and poor there's a lot of stress but you learn it's the best time to do something like that. In the future it's still possible but with more money comes more responsibility and it gets harder. I ended up living in Osaka and New York with no money and it was hard but I wouldn't trade those experiences for anything. Best of luck!

Hi Robin! I know you have answered the question of "Can you become fluent in a language without living in the country for a long period?" before and you answered yes and spoke of your time in Japan and France but what are the best ways to this? There is only so much grammar and set phrases that one person can learn without getting a chance to put them into practice! Thanks!

some ways to put your language into practice are making friends, online or offline! there are some language exchange, language tutoring sites where you can talk to native speakers :) some popular ones are hellotalk, tandem, my language exchange, etc. also robin has made some videos on 'how to become fluent without going to the country' and 'how to immerse' just look em up!

I watched Shogun back in 1980. I bought the book and I have read it so many times. Although I'm quite new to learning Italian I have ordered it in the italian version. It will be hard work but I think it will help me enormously as I know the story so well. Am I crazy ? No, I don't think so .
