In this video I talk about using Imagery in your writing.
For me, the best kind of imagery is that which has purpose as well as being nicely written. Imagery doesn't have to be all about beauty, it can be about utility and moving your story forwards too.
Imagery can also be used to direct the reader's imagination and to create stronger impressions of your story in their mind.

Love some of these descriptions: 'as tall as my longing for home' and 'plump on other people's grief' (might not have quoted these 100% correctly!)

Thanks for the video Kieren. Still trying to find that spark to start writing again. Currently reading Catcher in the Rye, it’s a good book that’s giving me some ideas.

I enjoyed that book too, I think it’s a good example of a character driven novel ☺️ hang in there mate, it will come back, the spark is elusive 😕

I liked your flash fiction, it reminded me of camping in the woods far from civilaztion and all you see is the sky going to dark blue. I often get the inspiration of my stories from images that flash in my brain at the most mundane moments of the day, like doing the dishes or waiting to pick up my kids. Imagery often is one those aspects of fiction I enjoy, like painting my story with just the right words. Thanks I enjoyed your video a lot!

Thank you so much, I'm glad the story brought an image to mind for you. I also get inspiration from small flashes in my mind. It's amazing how those mindane moments can just allow a little bit of creativity to make it's way through!

Great video. This imagery can work like seasoning on a bland text, so the text doesn't necessarily need to be reworked to improve it. It's more like a change of tone.

I guess it's a matter of taste, but by "...high vaulted ceilings," I'd have been out of there. That prose has veered irrevocably into the purple zone. The smilies don't land for me, and I'm not pulled into the scene. The language does not function to 'show' his style of oration, nor does it provide subtext, hinting as the character's misbelief. I'm at a loss to understand what the writer is trying to achieve with that imagery.
