Good video It's great you've gone into winter with still plenty of grass and maize silage The cows and heifers are looking really well ahead of calving Farmers in the UK are pulling there hair out a bit I think, We had a very cold wet spring so cows went out very late but then it did warm up and most people had a huge first cut silage but then it's gone very hot and dry and now they're chasing grass for grazing and 2nd cut will not be anywhere near as good It's cooling down a bit this week and there has been some rain for most but there is rumours of several more hot dry spells with some speculation we could even see 40c record temperatures like last year which was supposed to be a 1 in 1000 Yr event we've already had low 30s

Thanks Keith, I’m actually really short of grass and feed now, just haven’t seen good growth rates which we usually do. So a little bit scary. 40 is getting pretty up there for you guys over there, that’s roasting. Didn’t you have a dry summer last year as well?

Always great videos. We do a fair amount of cow races and the cheapest thing a farmer can do is to spray the edges of the race. And if the bottom wires are taken off you can poke ya digger bucket under the wire, not always possible because of calf movements I understand but it really helps us digger drivers making a good job 😂

Things can be pretty touchy with the farm tracks. One of the Councils had a crack at someone I knew for something fairly trivial.(Looking up the FEP etc, using the right contractor, the registered civil engineer for the larger jobs). 1) Back in the day for the farm track, I would have put a dirt berm in the topside paddock, to reduce water runoff on the farm track. Depending on the rule book etc widening the farm track a wee bit, making a topside culvert for the track, crowning the track, putting concrete or other material pipes across the track at intervals, adjusting the lowerside fence so some type of tractor scraper/ blade/ bar can get under the fence, to keep the build up knocked down. (Probably preferable to the large total vet bill for lame cows some places add up) 2) Might put some type of marked off poles in the drains so you can measure the water heights through the year. Some councils suggest to clean the drains when using adigger to clear some and leave some lengths of drain.(probably trying to limit the effects on eels)
@TheOnceADayFarmer
@TheOnceADayFarmer Жыл бұрын
Yep you’ve got to be a bit careful around waterways where tracks are, but most people understand so hopefully council doesn’t have to get involved in to many instances like that 😅 I guess they all have different rules though

Just wondering Andrew why don't you hire a small excavator for the weekend with a mud bucket and clean all the drains out properly?
@TheOnceADayFarmer
@TheOnceADayFarmer Жыл бұрын
I think in the summer when it dries out a bit I might just do that, generally it’s pretty effective and efficient getting a big one in as they are real quick and get through it so quick

Andrew, re Tow n Fert. Fantastic machines but if it just for urea you can achieve the same with a mixing tank, petrol pump and an ordinary sprayer. My set up cost a 1/4 of the Tow and Fert. I have taken off the booms and just have 3 nozzles which spread at 15m. Be careful with scorch. Spread/spray on cool dull days or dusk.
@TheOnceADayFarmer
@TheOnceADayFarmer Жыл бұрын
Thats handy! and a massive saving, we do have that little tow behind sprayer so maybe I should try that first, the tanks not that big though

U should try catch a few rats and but them in a big barrel that they can’t get out and let them starve and they will eat each other until one survives then that rat will only eat flesh and will get rid of the other rats

Tow and Fert have a good reputation. Made by Metalform in Dannevirke, that grew out of the older Easton Engineering. (they built bridge girders & other things) You should contact them for a sponsorship, they are a great company, with a very long history.
