Also, after punching keyes head out covenant spec op units will arrive on the ship (Colored Black, White or Gray). There should be 1 elite with a needler near the end. The Maw - Not sure specifically but I know 1 Elite has a needler. I think it's the hallway that connects the armory room (the one actually filled with ammo) and engine room. I used to mod Halo 1 on PC back in the early-to-mid 2000's, and a needle shotgun was one the first weapons I made. I also made a "grunt launcher" that shot screaming grunts which explode like a plasma grenade when they hit something. (All of this was back when I still used to be smart). Also had a Covenant flamethrower that used the plasma grenade's particle system effect for the blue flames..... and it (unsurprisingly) slowed the frame-rate to a crawl.

To be honest, that's pretty fitting with the canon. Sangheili have taken the role in the Covenant as warriors and embraced that role fully. Meaning that scientists weren't especially needed or valued. Meaning Sangheili understanding of their own tech was laughably bad. And why bother to learn when you can just kick a grunt and tell them to fix it or have a Huragok deal with it? That's why Sangheili like Kasha 'Hilot, who are intelligent and well-versed enough in things other than "HONOR! SMASH! KILL!" are working alongside humans/UNSC on a joint research project. And, of course, this benefits humanity greatly as well. We get access to Covenant tech we couldn't reliably get (and in pristine working condition) and the people that know how to use it and service them to a degree and the Sangheili get to learn their own tech and get benefits from human manufacturing technology (which apparently when the Sangheili artisans learned the full context of were very eager to investigate because mass production isn't their strong suit). Which is why ONI attempting to cause issues with the Swords of Sangheilios and the Arbiter pisses me off to no end because it's such short sighted stupidity to do so. Especially right after the war ended. Don't get me wrong, I'm not naive, I know ONI has to spy on everyone - including and especially allies - to remain ahead of the game, but... Don't rock the boat.

@matchesburn5 жыл бұрын
@@brawlgasm56 Nah. Needler wounds are supposedly far worse than Spiker rounds by far because of the shattering and fragmentation effects of the crystal. If a Spiker round impaled you and blew into several thousand tiny pieces of shrapnel, you'd have a point. But as it stands, the Needler rounds are much more dangerous even if you don't take into the critical mass explosion mechanism if you get hit by enough of them. Because even a single crystal eventually shatters and explodes. Inside your body. Basically turning that localized area into ground chuck. And, to make matters worse... those pieces of shrapnel stay in your body. Someone has to go through and pick that shit out of your body, assuming you even live, so as to prevent infection/gangrene. And, if they don't, it's going to stay in there and cause issues because you have an alien crystal with unknown properties in your body with very, very sharp edges that is eventually going to do something terrible to your body or come out like some metal shrapnel does. And if you really want to see nasty stuff, look up the lore of the Covenant carbine. Getting shot with those rounds, which were high velocity irradiated rounds, were basically a death sentence even if a Medic was there to immediately remove it since the rounds were so heavy metal toxic and radioactive and would often spread it throughout the body material from the round got transmitted to the body tissue and blood it hit. Can you imagine how much it would suck to get hit in the arm and barely hurt by the round only to realize it was from a Covenant carbine and that you were basically almost doomed to certain death as soon as it hit? Ugh. And, oh yeah, radiation sickness is a very bad way to die, to make matters even worse. Look at those poor bastards that were part of the "Liquidators" crew. Horrific deaths.

I've always thought of the needler as similar to the staff weapon in Star Gate, it is more of a weapon of terror than a weapon of war. The people who put it in wide spread use within the Covenant were simply impressed by it's potential destruction, not whether it is an effective weapon of war. 'why we don't see it used by Elites, and mostly Grunts, Brutes, and Jackals. And for Jackals, I think even they would see the overall ineffective nature of it, however, they wouldn't have a choice in what they were armed with unlike the Elites.

Also, it's worth noting that while obscured targets (i.e. behind cover) and targets at range can't be tracked with projectiles... those projectiles can still hit them and do the same damage if you hit. If you have ammo to burn, just use the Needler's insane rate of fire to dump lead... er... crystal... in the direction of the enemy. Here is a pretty good theory about the T33 SuperCombine GML "The Needler." Though the operation of the Needler is similar to it's larger predecessor the Needler Rifle the theory of operation and use couldn't me more different. The NR has a much faster projectile velocity than the GML, but the GML has tacking unlike the NR. The weapon has a module at the end of the barrel. My theory: 1. That the Needler uses a data link system, but doesn't require it in and uses magnetic fields in order to steer the projectiles towards it's intended target. 1a. Because it would use magnetism to steer it's range and speed are very limited. 2. The Needler atomizes the crystals and expels them as a hot gas that turn makes them predictably magnetic and can be accelerated with no moving parts. 2a. The crystals are Piezoelectric in a solid state, magnetic in a semi gas state and at high temperatures and are reactive to electricity which causes them to fragment due to the differences in tensile strength inside each or the following crystals. (Similar to Prince Rupert's Drops) 2a1. Between being piezoelectric the crystals feel an impact which starts the chain reaction. The electricity generated further turns some parts into a semi gas which causes the "pink mist" that you see. (Unrelated theory; the real reason why jackets carry shields and the reason why Elites and some brutes have personal energy shields.) Idk if this all is actually canonized 🤷♂️ not a lore expert. How it works with no moving parts or power theory; it uses magnets, a capacitor, a semi active data link system, and IR. When you push the button it sends power to a magnet that atomizes a small part of the crystal and gets sent down the barrel which the violent movement activates the Piezoelectric properties that simultaneously power the the tracking module and charges another capacitor, in a very specific order, to minimize recoil, and doesn't strain too much of the wielder's arms. In theory if we has access to a crystal like that, making a real life needler wouldn't me an issue, and the price for this ammo would be super cheap, which is why the Covenant used a ton of them. Another one of my theories on the Needler is that an Engineer seen a broken NR and "fixed" it and made it better, much better.

I'm not either. When I first played Halo CE back in 2001 I was blown away with The Needler and was always fascinated by it's homing capabilities. I have went through a ton of lore as well and the few rgu fs that I know is that they are loosely based off of Forerunner designs like most Covenant technology. Which in the books stretching from 2526 to 2552 the humans has always been the underdog and never understood why because technically does dictate strategy and vice versa. The main reason why they lost that war was because they never truly understood the technology they had, and didn't truly appreciate it. One book that supports this is "Halo: Silent Storm." Great read, and it's on Audible if you don't have time. Troy Denning's work is probably some of the best Halo Books written... besides my peeve of him referencing the thing that contains ammo that goes into a weapon that is closed from all but the top end as a "clip" instead of the proper word which is a piece of metal that holds the back of the casings for ammunition that only covers the back... I can't help but to picture Spartan's and Marines with M1903s shooting aliens. 🤣

Wonder if the crystals after impact have some sort of harmonic resonator that ramps up their frequency until it reaches such extreme vibrations that the crystals literally explode. Like the crystals start singing whenever a bunch get in proxi with each other until their are enough to attain explosive fragmentation. Idk about FoF but if you could get them attuned towards attraction to bioelectric fields you could get them to home in on biological target. A time dilation field (to grow the crystals in extreme acceleration), a ambient humidity extractor (as a medium to grow the crystals in), and a power core of some kind, to run the whole thing.

@Furzkampfbomber5 жыл бұрын
@The Lonely Rogue Well, I did not want to start a philosophical discussion, but assuming the techological gap between a visiting species and the natives of a planet is big enough, chances are good the culture of the native species would be most likely destroyed anyway. Just google for "cargo cult", an effect that could be just as devastating as a violent invasion. _"And who's to say we're hostile to these aliens?"_ When we talk about games, especially _FPS_ games, and story writing, well, then one party _has_ to be hostile, otherwise there would be no "S" in "FPS", since you would be lacking a reason to discharge your weapons towards anyone. And if we start from a scenario where the humans are the technologically advanced species, then _we_ would have to fill the role of the aggressor, since a species travelling lightyears only to attack a species that is way more advanced and could mob the floor with this attacker would not make that much sense. But to come back to your initial question, yes, of course you are right. There are millions of interesting, riveting and thought-provoking stories to find in such a scenario. You can even write stories for more traditional shooters that deliver all of that. One of the most fascinating shooters I have ever played and which is still sticking with me after years is "Spec Ops: The Line", which starts like a normal shooter and ends as a complete and utter mindfuck that was messing with the player all the time and tells a story about war and what it does to the human mind. Absolutely brilliant and also quite the rare exception. And when we talk about a franchise like "Halo", then the background scenario is pretty much a given. Humankind needs to be struggling and with the back to the wall, the enemy needs to look intimitading and almost impossible to defeat. Humankind needs to be the underdog here, simply because it makes the more interesting story _in the context of a shooter._ Sure, you could for instance tell the story of a soldier that is part of an invasion force and later in the game defects, but then again, I see nothing wrong with the classical "underdog vs. overwhelming odds // small Gallic village vs. entire Roman army" scenario as long as it is well told. :)

Maybe I missed it but I believe you forgot to mention that the explosion from multiple needles only occurs on organic targets and not on anything else.

Ah the needler. The only weapon that makes running around a corner for cover useless.

It's not based on Forerunner technology? The Sentinel Enforcers if Halo 2 are armed with their own version of the Needler though.

I would have vastly preferred a version of the Needler that has no homing effects, but has greatly increased velocity. The Dark Eldar from Warhammer 40k utilize toxin impregnated crystal shard projectiles to great effect. Replace the toxins with the mysterious explosive aspects of the Needler crystal and I'd be very afraid of such a weapon. Or just combine the toxins with the explosive crystals... Yeesh.

I think a needle shotgun would be an effective weapon. Needler with extended barrel, still tracks targets but the needles fly slightly faster. It would either fire a bunch at once or fire on a burst setting, shooting 7 needles at something upwards of 1,200 rpm. You could just shlcklhkclhkclhkclhk BOOM click click shlcklkclkclkclckclk BOOM

My head canon is that the blamite crytal shards are electrically encoded with data gathered from a heat signature sensor at the front of the weapon this data makes the crystal decay/propel more quickly from specific sides of the shard guiding it to the position of the target where it was when the weapon was initially fired. But that doesn't explain how in game the needles track you when your moving. Maybe it receives constant signal from the needler as its mid air to its target? I'm not sure. If I was making the halo games I would ret-con most of the tracking stuff cause it doesn't make a lot of sense. Especially the charged plasma pistol bolt that doesn't make sense at all. Atleast with the needler you can say that its the exotic ammunition that does the tracking.

@Usze 'Taham I think that's a bit more advanced than the covenants technological abilities. That would be something the precursors or maybe the forerunners could build but def not covies
@smangy54425 жыл бұрын
@Usze 'Taham I know they didn't make the crystals they were a natural mineral in one of Sanghelios's moons. All I'm saying is I don't think the covenant had any control or understanding of neural physics. "The workings of neural physics were completely beyond the conventional technologies of younger races, even the Forerunners"- From Halopedia And I thought the needler was originally developed by the San 'Shyuum after they made contact with Sangheili. Shyuums were more adept at building advanced tech at least more than the Sangheili
@smangy54425 жыл бұрын
@Usze 'Taham do you have sources for it being pure sangheili tech? I read on the wiki that both human and sangheili scientists were studying the needler and it's functionality post human-covenant war if they are still studying its inner workings then that doesn't sound like they designed it themselves. I think a better explanation is that its pure san-shyuum tech and that only they know the inner workings of it. However given that the San shyuum are pretty much extinct now, those secrets died with them. hence sangheili and humans studying it post war.

Do certain types of Covenant weapons come from different races? Or were they just all developed by the the Covenant as a whole? The reason I ask is cuase theres a fair variety of different types of weapon, plasma, fuel rods, needles and spikes. We know the spike weapons are from Jiralhanae origins but where do the needlers or fuel rods weapons come from?

Love the channel and love the detailed content about rarely discussed topics. I'd love to see you do a video analyzing the blamite crystals themselves and your thoughts over how the material works. Hope you're doing good and keep up the great content!

Is there any way you can cover a theory video of SPARTAN-Vs? I know that you mentioned them in your: "How Master Chief Should Die" video. I don't know if it was intentional or on accident, but I would like to know what you think S-Vs should be IF they ever do become a thing. Like for example, what would make them so different compared to the S-IV program? Or other previous Spartan programs? I thought long and hard about what a S-V program would be, but have ran into many problems. The big thing that I thought of was clone spartans. But, how would that go? Who will be determined to be cloned? Costs? Secrecy? Service number designation? How far has cloning technology come since the flash cloning of the S-II candidates? So many questions, hard answers, interesting theories. Love your videos.
