Hi Guys its Julie again In 1887, British Prime Minister Robert Gascoyne-Cecil appointed his nephew Arthur James Balfour as Minister for Ireland. The phrase 'Bob's your uncle' was coined when Arthur referred to the Prime Minister as 'Uncle Bob'. Apparently, it's very simple to become a minister when Bob's your uncle!” now "Bob's your uncle" is a phrase commonly used in the United Kingdom and Commonwealth countries that means "and there it is", or "and there you have it", or "it's done". Typically, someone says it to conclude a set of simple instructions or when a result is reached, hope that answers your question, every day is a learning day xxxxx

Ray, keep the same color order for your granny squares but do half in reverse. That way you use the same amount of each yarn and you get a more diverse amount of color combos, but it's really only one in reverse of itself. :D Can't wait to see what it looks like as you progress! Thanks for another great episode, y'all!

Ray when you talked about socks without toes I nearly spit out my coffee. My 10 year old granddaughter asked me to knit her a pair of toeless socks. I’m assuming she will wear them with flip flops. The Reacher series is fantastic. The actor who plays Reacher embodies everything about the character-physical, mental etc from the book. The books are some of the best I’ve read in any series.

Thank you for another lovely episode. Also, I really love the amount of crochet. I made my first granny square blanket years ago because I got inspired by a friend who had started one and have been hooked ever since. So great for leftovers. And btw I actually do not faff about with a stitch marker on my crochet projects, I just pull at the yarn to make my last loop gigantic when I stop and toss my project in my bag. Then, when I pick it up again, I just make the loop small again and am ready to go. Well, and now I really must make a Jethro, too. So, thanks again ;-)

Ray, sounds like you've landed on the right decision on your Jethro. Just wanted to advise you not to go up a hook size. Remember that cotlin is probably going to stretch a bit over time because of the nature of that fiber. I'm finding last year's summer knits are bigger this spring as I am pulling them out. And you're going to want to have that piece for a while after all the work you're going to put into it. Happy crocheting!

When making granny squares, I've added a row or two of single crochet if some of the squares end up slightly small. Maybe you could do that if the fabric of the square you like ends up being a little small. Looks very cool - especially when you make it a design feature.

One of the beautiful things about knitting (and crochet) is that there are often many ways to get to the same result. Given that, I won't criticize how someone else knits just because I would do it differently, although I may say "here's another option and why I like it." However, I have to speak up regarding Summer Lee's advice to change gauge by knitting more tightly. I have been knitting for over 45 years and I can remember many knitting experts saying to NOT try to change gauge by knitting more loosely or tightly but to simply change needle size. For one thing, there is a limit to how much smaller you can make your stitches by knitting more tightly. Second, knitting tightly increases the strain on your hands. Third, if you manage to retrain your muscle memory to knit tightly, what happens when you knit something in a thicker yarn and want to knit using your old style? This might work for Summer if all she knits is socks (and she does have a beautiful collection of designs so I can believe that she doesn't knit anything else), but for people who knit a variety of garments in various yarn weights, changing needle size is the way to get the gauge you want. Besides, so many of us already have sets of interchangeable needles; why not use them?
@NeedlesattheReadyPodcast
@NeedlesattheReadyPodcast Ай бұрын
That is a really great point, changing needle size can be a much better option.

Hi Kevin, regarding your pistachio colour way. Kay Jones from The Bakery Bears uses a light gold/yellow as a final over wash to slightly tame the brightness and tie the colours together on some of her colour ways. I think it may be Aztec Gold from either Darma or Jacquard, but done quote me on that. Maybe something like that might give your pistachio more of that muted green that you are looking for. That being said your version is beautiful just as it is.

The tattoos are a very lovely tribute to Tarquin. ❤ Love your crochet journeys! I prefer working from crochet charts, too. I often put a stitch marker on the first and last stitch of each row, especially if you’re supposed to crochet into the turning chain-it saves me time and helps me keep my stitch count correct. Ray, I often have to go down a hook size when working with cotton yarn. Be sure to wash your gauge swatches-cotton may stretch a bit when washed.

You have inspired me to start a Jelly Roll Blanket! I am already on my third strip and using the join as prescribed in the pattern. I agree about the previous strip’s color peaking out but, I think I can block that out a bit or just embrace it. This has been super meditative for me to knit and there are just times when you need a knit like that. Also Ray, as far as your Jethro cardigan, I really like that green-gray color as your all over color rather than the black. Also, I would be careful with the placement of the reddish color in the middle of a square so it doesn’t look like a part of your chest anatomy, if you get my drift. 😊

I love both of your color combinations for your granny square sweaters. Looking forward to seeing those come to life. Question: Would you consider putting inspiration project pictures with your yarn in your shop - maybe photos of the projects you're making for your trunk shows? It would be great inspiration of things to do with the yarn (just a thought). I live in the South and have no need for hats and shawls but really want to make something with your varigated yarn but don't have any ideas besides maybe a wrap.

Hi guys!!! Ray, you're adorable with AND without a beard!! Love tattoos!! I have numerous, I'm gonna be one of the most colorful old ladies in the home. 🤣😂🤣 Many photorealistic butterflies & flowers. My artist is AMAZING!! Had a great week!! My BFF who had a stroke in February text me!!! She's slowly becoming herself again. 🥰 Another cute baby sweater is "baby sophisticate". I'm a lifetime "Boye"(boy) hook girl, I STILL use the set my grandmother gave me when she taught me as a child.....I have no clue how I've never lost any! I remember red pistachios!! And the white ones.....with sooooo much salt it would stop a bull elephant!! They were my favorite. 🥰

Love to hear your thought process - and you figured it out as I was typing my thoughts - so hah! Much better approach “keep your comments to yourself”!! 😂 always a pleasure to share a new episode on the fortnight. Yup - small little hooks. I’m making a Battenberg Blanket with fingering on a 2.5mm crochet hook - will likely outlive me to finish it! LOVE the granny square cardis - may inspire me and if only I’d kept the granny clothes from the first time around in the 70s…

Growing up they were they only ones I saw & the first time I saw a color called pistachio & it was green I was totally confused. 😂 And Ray wasn’t being a jerk about the crochet sweater at the end. 🤣 Ray was talking to me. Your crochet hook is inset, you might have better luck with a tapered hook working with the acrylic yarn. Another thing that can effect the ease of using different yarns is the length of the shaft.

OK, Ray. For your squares. You can still do several different color sequences on your squares, but I'd do it like this. Take the one that you like, with the copper in the center - call them A, B, C, D, E. For the next set of squares, do B, C, D, E, A. Then C, D, E A B, etc. Because with 5 colors, you actually have 5! (5 factorial) ways to put them together, which is 120 possibilities. Pretty easy to NOT put those 2 close colors together.
