Pretty Lion yarn colors for that hat. Acrylics or cotton acrylic blends are best for baby items too IMO. Fun socks...also reminds me of elves. I agree, perfect size poms for the hats. Congratulations on your 50th episode - great stuff. I also like to use a non-superwash yarn for some of my projects (most things other than socks). Since I am Canadian, I try to support Canadian producers where I can. These are a few of my favourites... Lily and Pine, Briggs and Little, Topsy Farms, MacAuslands, Ancient Arts, and Custom Woolen Mills. Some of them also sell superwash, so you have to read the descriptions.

As an Edinburgh resident - your pronunciation was perfect, Ray! - we really are pretty spoiled for access to non-superwash yarn. All the local yarn shops stock a pretty good selection - both of commercial non-superwash and hand dyed. And alongside that, I can order from Holst in Denmark or Woolyknit in England, and the yarn will arrive within the week. I also find that it’s a bit cheaper to buy non-superwash, which means I can buy more of it - hahaha! I literally just answered the door while I was watching your podcast and it was the postman with (another) two cones of holst Supersoft. Eep!

Hi! The reason us europeans can knit easily with non superwash is because theres a lot of brands located in scandinavia that only have non superwash. Like Holst, Rauma, Hillesvag. Then there's Istex from Iceland and the UK has some smaller local brands. Because of trade agreements and such within the EU it's really easy to get brands from different countries, here in the netherlands there's a couple shops that stock it as well! :)

Acrylic yarns have come so far from what they used to be. They are great for kids things and hats that need washing. As a cancer survivor myself and losing all my hair during treatment, I would recommend a non Mercerized cotton. I had an array of colors to match all my outfits. great conversation about non super wash yarn, it sees that small businesses and farm producers are the best source of non sw yarn and by supporting them, you are supporting smaller mills and their communities, In NZ, the land once famous for having more sheep than humans, the value of wool currently hardly covers the cost of shearing and so many mills have closed. Seek out the small farms, as they are the ones looking after the land.

Happy 50th podcast. I don't know about Norway but in Britain the emphasis on non-superwash wool has been growing thanks in large part to the Campaign for Wool that was launched by Prince Charles in 2010 to educate consumers and promote all aspects of the wool industry. It was part of his interest in environmental conservation and preventing the extinction of certain sheep breeds that had become endangered as the wool industry declined.

You have Olympia farm right in CT and they do the festival circuit. The Woolly Thistle has an online only shop and they import tons of non-superwash from The British Isles, Europe and Scandinavian countries. But then I find I never wear the objects. I need to knit with colors I’ll actually wear, but they don’t bring me the same joy. Lion brand heartland is one of my favourite yarns to knit hats with. It washes wonderful and is soft and warm. I don’t often knit with wool for gifts as everyone likes wash and wear stuff, no fuss with laundering instructions.
@NeedlesattheReadyPodcast2 жыл бұрын

😍 about non superwash here in the UK, there are many different sorts of LYS and most are basic and don’t stock any wool at all, then some perhaps sock yarn, Opal etc, then some stock a better range, then the more high end stores will have hand dyed superwash skeins and perhaps some non superwash, like Jamiesons or similar. But to shop online, there are a lot of non superwash options available. The Shetland wools (2 companies up there, one sources solely from Shetland, the other Shetland breed fleece, but from anywhere, and I can never remember which is i which ☺️ I *think* the more swish looking website is the one that sources off Shetland) There are also independent mills like woollyknits and John Arbon that ship out and sell at shows, then smaller companies like Garthenor, woolly mammoth, daughter of a shepherd, blacker yarns, that stand at shows and sell online. So it’s there are easily available, but if someone just shopped in their LYS that stocked the common commercial brands, they might never see it 🐑

Great job on all the hats__yours, the gifts, and the ornaments! The pom poms are just too cute! Ray, I'm glad you have your crochet blanket back out. It looks like it's getting big enough to keep you warm while you're knitting it. I think if you get a sheep, Ray, you need to move where there's not so much snow! It will probably need an alpaca to play with! Maybe a yak, too. Kevin, I like you're new yarn dying colors, especially your unnamed one! I don't understand how you can put 2 dye colors at a time in one "pan" and keep them separate. Guess I should watch some videos!

Fantastic podcast!! Congratulations on 50 episodes. I’m struggling with the beginning of the Musselburgh hat-I’ll look for the Tin Can Knits video.

Hi Ann! Thank you so much. I’m not sure if Tincan knits has a video on it, I found it on their website, it was written instructions with pictures. I’ll add the link below.

I cast on a Mussel-bruh :-) for my nephew's xmas gift. His swim team works out in an outdoor pool (we're in SoCal, but it gets cold in January)!! Congrats on your 50th podcast!! I find myself thinking each Sunday, "has it been a fortnight?"

In your spare time (IKR?!) read Vanishing Fleece by Clara Parkes. I live in AU now, am originally from CT (born in Waterbury) while cultural differences pay a part in the availability of non-superwash wool, there's many more factors at play. Love watching you both and you guys make me miss CT!

I am in Colorado and we have a few local farms that have yarns done in some small local mills and are in the local yarn stores. There are several bigger names such as Mountain Colors, Mountain Meadow and Brown Sheep in Montana, Wyoming, and Nebraska that have non-superwash yarns. Also on the west coast are a few that we find here. I love their yarns. I would like to try some those that Inga talks about and also Laerka on Fiber Tales. I love your channel.

Thanks Jackie!! What a lucky find! I bet if we looked hard enough, we’ll find more locally available wool. Thanks so much for sharing 🥰🥰

In 2018 when I was going thru chemo I got to looking around the room and several folks were sitting in their chairs with towels on their heads because of hair loss and cold heads. I’m a loom knitter and so put together man colors and women colors and brought them in and everyone would pick what they wanted. I also got requests for certain colors and any hats left over were taken into the hospital and given out. I forgot, Hi boys!!!!

The awakening and becoming are such great books. Awakening needs to be read before the becoming. I am so bummed to have to wait a year for the next one after finishing the first 2 in just over a week.

Your hoodies are SO FREAKING GORGEOUS!!!!!!!! Just beautiful. I found some 100% rustic wool at JoAnn's in Palm Springs. It's called Fishermen's Wool and is made in India. It is in 8 ounce, 227 gram skeins and you get 465 yards or 425 meters. +I got 2 colors for some very simple color works hats and the first one did soften up & bloom beautifully. On the first one, the 'lice' were hidden but after blocking, they puffed up and show better. The 2nd one will be finished today and doing 2 in a row made my tension better on the 2nd one. But either way, they are both pretty awesome. Here's hoping the recipients find them comfortable. Nice episode!

I was in Jo-Ann's a couple of weeks ago (Nashua, NH) and a woman purchased a "cake" same color that Ray is using. She spoke to the Manager about getting more. Seems most stores had a cake or two, with 180+ in the local warehouse. I purchase Holst Garn directly from them , best price that way. The Woolly Thistle, web shop based in NH has a lot of different non-superwashed "rustic" yarns. I watch Eli aka Skeindeer Knits on KZbin, she is a Norwegian living, knitting and designing in London. Getting her favorite Norwegian yarns got harder thanks to Brexit. Luckily she has family still in Norway. Love her colorwork mitten patterns, that is how I've been getting back into stranded colorwork.

Finally, you have pronounced Musselburgh properly. I so proud of you both... Now Yorkshire has to be conquered, remember Yorkshhhhhhh! As to UK yarns, can I suggest you look at Wee County Yarns up in Scotland, their JC Rennie is to die for and although it looks as rough as f*ck, the more you handle it the softer it gets. I knit one of their Advent cowls every other year but you would love their kits, which are just wonderful.

Thank you, we tried to get find the proper way to say it. Thank you for the yarn suggestions.
