Charles Malki, Biologist & Plant Expert from ivorganics.com/ discusses the value of Neem oil over all other horticultural organic gardening oils, specifically on citrus leaf curl (miners), banana disease and fig mosaic virus. NOTE: Adding horticultural oils will cause your plants to heat up in the summer sun-- Learn the benefits of following your oil sprays with IV Organic sunscreen for plants to keep your plants several degrees cooler, especially when applying pest/ disease control oils.

Thank you so much for the visual on what to look for on the leaf miner. You're a good teacher. I went out to inspect my citrus and I'm happy to say I don't have any yet. I know this is off the subject, however, I've been having a problem with my container strawberries. When they get ripe and I pick them there are pinholes in them. The containers are on shelves and I don't see signs of slugs and I think it's too hot in NorCal for the birds to come out. I'm a novice gardener (for now :) and only have a few strawberries to pick at any given time and it's becoming frustrating not to enjoy at least one strawberry. Can you help shed light on this? PS. I have your IV Organics but didn't use it for my container avocado trees and the sun fried half the foliage. Will do better next time.

Wow, I just learned way more than watching “this old house” and citrus trees. They mentioned neem oil but that was it; you go way in depth and I subscribed to your channel awhile back and I’m glad I did. They did show how to make tree tea which kept hearing about but I actually thought it was real tea. Funny. Thank you for posting!!👍🏻

I have a Meyer lemon in a large container, although it’s only small with not many leaves, but I noticed citrus leaf miner on a few leaves. I removed the affected leaves. I have a West Indian lime which has a lot more foliage and citrus leaf miner is very prevalent on the young leaves. I am usually removing the affected leaves or cutting the branches. The lime tree is about 3 years old and is producing some fruit.

Hi Charles! Love the videos! Question on my young fig trees. Having a hard time distinguishing if I have under or over watered. Do you know what the difference between a fig leaf curling upward on itself as opposed to it curling downward? Also do you have a comprehensive video on leaf characteristic and the meaning such as under or over watering and nutrient deficiency? Thanks

Hello Ani, Since this publication, I have removed any artificial feeders. Check out this product that I used for a short time: kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3a8hHZ3adSlqMk The best thing to do is plant native plants that feed the hummingbirds, such as California fuchsia. I'll share the results with all later this summer. Thank you for the feedback! Charles :-)

What a beautiful demonstration of leaf miners! Perfect example. You must be in California? Yes? The two products that you classified as inorganic are actually organic nonetheless. But the main point is that these two products are not SPECIFIC to one insect. So they kill ALL insects, life in the soil disrupting any harmony. Benefiials keep harmful pests at bay and in control. I am a pesticide applicator licensed for 30 + years. I am so glad you told people to use this stuff in the evening or at night! I don't care what it says on the MSDS sheets...I keep chemicals like Neem sprayed properly at night only! Our bees are in trouble.

Have a question. I have a young avocado tree, a few of the branches have small black spots. Is this a sign of a fungus of some kind and how do I treat it??????? The leaves are ok. They are last year’s growth and will be dying off to make way for the new. It is March and the new growth is just barely coming out, I don’t know what kind of avocado tree it is. It has fruit already. The flowers are real small. It get these long bushes of flowers. It did it all winter. This is Mexico, so it didn’t get very cold. It is a new tree, I just planted it late summer. First year for me. I white washed most of the branches right after I got it. What I did was not affect with the black spots. Please answer me. You never have in the past. I am hoping.

I first started visiting India in the early 90's. I remember being stuck at a train station, waiting about 18 hours for a train that was late. It was just me and about 3000 other people. I noticed there were people selling small twigs that people would chew and use to scrub their teeth. Turns out the sticks were from the Neem tree and people were using them as disposable travel tooth brushes to clean and freshen their mouths. Who woulda thunk it but if it's okay to chew, it's probably safe and organic for your garden.

My problem is that Saturday leaves started falling off, even the New Baby Leaves. I have a Water/light/acid level probe ive been checking it with too. So Very Sorry this is so Long. You mention maintaining flowers and monarch butterflies early on in this video, have you ever seen what neem does to monarch pupa? I don’t know citrus flowers to be particularly appealing to monarchs however they do visit many other nectar flowers are on their migration. I would not put neem on everything haphazardly, it should be used in moderation and only as needed. And as neem has systemic attributes, try to keep it away from any plant that polenators visit. Sometimes it’s best to just let a few leaves wilt or manually pick the wilted ones out if you don’t like them. With the risks to our bees and monarchs, many people should do more reading before slathering plants in chemicals, “organic” or not.

He is so passionate about the care of his plants; I recently started using Neem because I wanted something organic or natural and the store supposedly were selling Neem that way, but looking at the bottle I noticed a bunch of other inactive ingredients that were not natural and some even had Glyphosate in them. They only put the main ingredient out there Neem, but a bunch of bad stuff was hidden from the public. So in a round about way, I decided to find out what some of the other inactive ingredients were and I'm glad I did because I changed my mind about buying it and decided I would simply use the main ingredient along with water or coconut oil or other ingredients I have from my essential oil collection. Always read your ingredients and if you don't know what it is, do some research. Those are usually the ones you need to watch out for. I prefer making up my own essential oil recipes instead anyway. Be delight and you and your plants will thrive.

@IVOrganic 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Tx713281832, Neem oil should correct all these problems. However, I am learning from people writing/ e-mailing me that there is different neem oil products on the shelf that are more effective than others (such as more refined and/ or cold pressed, etc). Depending on how the product is manufactured, has varying (more or less) effectiveness. I recommend that you start with neem... watch the results over the next 2-3 weeks, then alternate with a spinosad (bacteria base) product such as Captain Jack. Neem would be the "right punch" on those pests, and Spinosad will be the "left punch" on knocking out those pest problems. With leaf minors, you may need to continue the coat the youngest and tender leaves predominately from April/May- October/November, which is the season leaf minors are most active. Keep me posted on your garden successes! Charles :-)

@IVOrganic
@IVOrganic 7 жыл бұрын
Hello Conrad, Yes. Follow the direction on the label... which generally suggest using it as a drench near the root zone of the plant. In my experience, you will eliminate the ant colony, or more likely significantly reduce the ant populations for a few weeks, or so. Note, ants do have a place in the natural biology of your garden-- So only spot treat those ants you suspect may be causing harm to your plants or home. Keep me posted on your successes! Charles :-)

Neem oil helps with all the chewing insects. Besides the fact that neem oil suffocates insects which are covered by it it also tastes very bitter. Many insects are attracted by fragrant sap produced by the trees. They can smell the plants from far away/ But if the taste is bitter they would rather go somewhere else and leave your trees alone. And as Charles has also stated neem oil contains azadirachtin which messes with insects reproduction ability. So if they consume it a lot they will not be able to advance further or lay eggs. I have used neem oil on my orange trees quite successfully. In my area besides leaf miners we also have psyllids. They are really tiny flies which suck the juices from citrus leaves. After a thorough application of neem oil they left my tree alone. I even watched their behavior for some time. They land and try to bite. But fly away after several seconds as the taste of the fully covered with neem oil leaves is too bitter.

I struggle with this. Ants are in some ways good but they also harbor and protect bad insects like aphids, scale insects etc. I use borax/ sugar. On my citris tree because the ants harvest nectar from the bad insects, i cant get them to eat borax. Neem had no effect on them because if anything it would kill the ones on the plant and not the thousands in the ant colony

Like the native plant reminder, something we should all strive for. I have a narrow strip between fence and driveway never used properly so I put a row of chips down as token preparation for native flowers.

Your energy is really impressive! One for you now: when mildew affects plants neem oil is effective. Rice starch fermented for 10 days (Oh! It really stinks) is very effective.

Just found your channel. Love it! I squish the buggies before throwing away the affected leaves. When my tree is sprouting new growth, I cover with a thin mesh bag to protect new leaves.
