Tut's wife was his sister, who was Nefertiti's daughter. So she and any children of her body would have the same mitochondrial DNA as Nefertiti. A mother-child link is easy to establish as long as the DNA is not contaminated or too degraded.

Speaking from the perspective of an amateur Egyptologist since I was nine years old, I am still learning new things and discover yet another first in history credited to the ancient Egyptians. Ancient Egyptian history is as rich as it is interesting, but it goes further. The history of Egyptology itself has much to offer and is as rich and interesting as the history itself. No wonder why a single person could never learn all there is to know about ancient Egypt. I guess that's why I love them so much. Anyway, keep up the great work! What a wonderful documentary! Not only gorgeous to look at, but the arguments are so well presented for the different points of view, along with new work. This is among the best of the many films on Egyptology that I have watched. I have two questions: firstly, what evidence do we now have that Ay was the son of Yuya and (presumably) Thuya? Secondly, and not mentioned here, is the possibility that Mutemwiya (mother of Amenhotep III) was the sister of Yuya or Thuya. These two possible relationships have often been suggested, but I'm wondering whether more evidence has been found for them. I have also seen mentioned that Thuya was descended from the great queens of the end of the 17th and beginning of the 18th dynasties. Given the possibility that Nefertari was descended from the 18th dynasty, I wonder whether there was not a female line spanning the late 17th through the 19th Dynasties which provided a backbone for the royal succession and rule. Just why were Yuya and Thuya the key people of the later 18th dynasty, a bit like John of Gaunt in 14th century England? There were so many powerful queens through that period, and we know so little about their origins. (Nefertari's marriage to Ramses II makes huge sense if she strengthened the legitimacy of the Ramessides).

Perhaps Nefertiti’s mummy is located in the hidden chamber behind the walls of King Tut’s tomb. Maybe she indeed did briefly rule as Pharaoh Smenkhare after the death of her husband.

I think KV21B is Queen Sitamun, the eldest daughter of Amenhotep III. Nefertiti would’ve been in her thirties by the end of the Amarna period and the beginning of Tut’s reign not in her 40s. However, Sitamun would’ve been. Furthermore, I think that this version of Ankhesenamun is not the daughter of Nefertiti but someone who shared the same name and was a daughter of Sitamun or one of Akhenaten’s eldest sisters. I think the mummy is either Sitamun or one of the eldest daughters of Amenhotep III.

I'm with Dr Kara Cooney here, this race to ID a mummy detracts from Nefertiti's lifetime achievements. It is interesting that she raises the case of the mummy currently thought to be of Hatshepsut....those who identified the mummy thought they had a rock solid case, backed by CT scans. They just missed one little detail....the tooth on which the entire identification rests, appears to be a 3 roots molar. And the mummy they think the tooth matches has a molar missing...in the upper palate, where molars have 2 roots. Nevertheless, the international Egyptology community appears to have accepted this very odd identification, and allowed it to distract from Hatshepsut's achievements.

West Valley remains forgotten by archaeological research. Herihor / Menkheperre / Nefertitii / other lost tombs may be there. If Amenothep III and Ay chose this place as a graveyard, others would have followed. It's impossible that there aren't other tombs there. Carter probed this place and found some interesting and indicative leads, Romer thinks the same. You are the best post-modern Egyptologist we have, and you keep getting better

I haven't watched the video yet, but I believe the title warrants a response. This queen and her husband were resented and despised while alive. They are missing. I'm not sure if they were properly mummified. Why would the priests devote the 70 days of careful mummification to this queen and pharaoh? I agree with those who say they were murdered, slaughtered, and disposed of by priests. Question is, did the priests pay for their crime? King Tut and his sister/wife survived. Where are the other sisters?

Well to me it's quite obvious that the mummy that supposedly passed away in their 40s would make sense to be Nefertiti. With that being said with what I feel in my heart with 100%. I would say 21b is Nefertiti.

I LOVE anything Curtis shows up in. I am such a fan. It would be such a treat to get a tour with him. What a joy that he has so much content on his channel. You're such a wonderful presenter. Also, I loved seeing Kara! She's one of my idols, for sure! She has such a lovely perspective on this debate. I remember Dr. Fletcher's investigation into Younger Lady some years ago, and I didn't agree with her then, and I don't agree with her now. I believe 21B is the best contender for Nefertiti...UNLESSS we do find the tomb of Smenkaure (which would be such a delight, I would faint), since I do believe Nefertiti and Smenkaure were the same person. I wish so much we could identify her without a doubt. I hope to someday in my lifetime have that closure. The thought of some Victorian eating her remains or grinding her up to make paint makes every part of my body cringe. I hope this was not her ending. I am so sad that it was for so many. :(

Thats only 4 answer in my opinion,1-after akhenaten dead,she hold on to the power but after sometimes she need to fleed or go exile and never be seen again and stay low for rest of her life,2-after she dead,the old priest smash her bone to pieces and never be seen again,3-tutankamun hide her body in a secret places,maybe inside his own tomb that got a hidden chamber or buried her in a normal burial so no one would know who she was,4-she make an agreement with ay to leave and be a secret

So many questions ! The genealogy of the 18th dynasty is obviously complicated by all the inter marrying . And a lot of information has been lost due to the post Akenaten purging as well . Perhaps K V 21 b is Nefertiti . This mummy seems to be a good candidate for Nefertiti .

Following your reconstruction of Nefertiti, I tend to lean towards a 'possibility'. However, the theory that King Tut's tomb is 'part' of Nefertiti 's tomb (hence its location - the direction - men's tombs would be located in the opposite direction of the tunnel) still raises my eyebrow. Given that King Tut died suddenly and prematurely, it is very logical that they possibly 'cut off' a section from his stepmother's tomb... I just don't understand why they don't send an endoscope through the wall and end this debate...'

The head of Tiye at 3:43 is not the actual head its features appear photoshopped. I can see you have the actual head in your other videos. The head looks prettier and less severe than it actually is. Not that the actual head is not pretty but she looks stern and very much a ruler in the actual head.

There can also be the question about 22c the male mummy along with 5he two women. Why should this mummy be included together?to have this piece of the consideration fit would require some means of a relationship. With the exception of the bones in the cave from the civil war period of the middle kingdom, there is no evidence of unrelated mummies being entombed together. Especially from the 18th Dynasty. While there is the evidence of such occurring with the sanctuary tombs of the 19th Dynasty.

If the younger woman had been Nefertiti the priests of the pharaoh after Akhenaten would have had her mummy destroyed. They've proven that Nefertiti and Akhenaten were thought of as traitors to the accepted religion before and again after them and that the priests of that religion and the pharaoh following Akhenaten destroyed every monument they could find to Nefertiti and Akhenaten and attempted to hide them within the walls of the renewed temple to the original supreme god of Egypt. Apparently this is a continuous theme through the history of Egypt as new pharaohs attempted to erase their predecessors they didn't agree with and hated. They spent much of their wealth and power attempting to out do their predecessors that they respected! Incredible documentary and it would be wonderful to see the mummies of Akhenaten and Nefertiti discovered and restored.

There is one method of obtaining conclusive DNA sampling, it unfortunately is invasive in that it requires the extraction of teeth. The other method while not as good, is what seems to have happened, the extraction of deep bone samples from the femoral hip ball. To complete the genealogical picture, it would be needed to locate from which wife was Aye born so that he was passed over for Akhenaten. To become Pharaoh. It is generally considered that Aye served Akhenaten’s father as a Vizier as well as Akhenaten and Tutankhamen , before usurping the throne for himself. And with the consideration of Ankhesetamun’s letter in the Hittite court. Basic inferring that Aye was a commoner. As with all investigations, all the pieces must fit to come to a best fit of the truth.

Nefertiti wasn't Tut's biological mother, instead, she was his step mother.. Akhenaten and nefertiti had up to 6 known daughters together.. Their 3rd daughter princess Ankhesenpaaton (who was prolly the oldest surviving princess of the Royal family) went on to later marry her half brother Tutankhamun

I thought that was a tour de force of Egyptology Curtis. Not going to lie, I was a bit distracted by Dr Aziz with her beautiful Egyption eye makeup. I was kind of nodding my head and going "uh ha" without really listening (please don't tell my partner Curtis 😉). Dr Cooney made a lot of sense to me. We can sometimes "chase our tails" looking for evidence that doesn't exist anymore. Anyway, I will have to watch it a few more times to absorb all the info in this wonderful documentary. I have thought kv21b is Nefertiti and for exactly the reasons you give. kv21a being the mother of Tut's children is therefore Akhesenamun and if kv21b is the mother of kv21a and she is as dna tells us then she is Nefertiti as Nefertiti was Ankh's mom. So sad that some lunatic tore off Ankh's head in the 1820s after her mummy had survived for 3000 years.

Interesting documentary. It could be so great if Egyptology and science someday found out where the mummy of Nefertiti is. There are so many questions that we would like answered. Personally I would like to hear what happened to Nefertiti after Amenhotep IV or Akhenaton died and was no longer King of Egypt. There´s so much in ancient Egypt that would be interesting to know. One example is the list of the Pharaos. There are so many questions we don´t know about some periods of their reign. Who reigned and for how long and did this King really reign in this period? Some questions are simply unanswered unless we are able to find the answers by finding traces. One thing we might be very curious about is the question about whether or not the Scorpionking is a myth or not. Some believe he was from a period before dynastic History, others that he could have been King Narmer. And again this raises the problem whether King Narmer was King Menes or not. Another interesting question was why a Pharaoh was named after Seth and not Horus as was common practice in Egypt. Was this Pharaoh a heretic like Akhenaton or was there another reason? One thing that has surprised me is that the whole 8, Dynasty should have been made up. So some Egyptologists say. But is this really true? It makes me curious when they don´t mention the list of names that should have been made up, because I would like to hear what those names are. They also say that some list of Kings that should have reigned are uncertain. Still they have been mentioned. The problem is probably because that the names have been found somewhere, but there are no other traces or great archeological discoveries that can confirm, prove or support the existence of these uncertain lists of Kings that should have reigned.

Hi there Gaetan, there have been surveys done by different teams using various techniques in regards to an undiscovered chamber in Tut's tomb. The results vary a lot. Some have concluded there is, some have concluded otherwise. There are anomalies for sure, but we should remember the valley of the kings is a spider web of tombs and tunnels. Also, far from being an undisturbed tomb, there were multiple attempts by robbers to access Tut's tomb who dug tunnels and are thought to have actually got in. Amongst others, I think these reasons account for any anomalies. But who knows ?...there could be 😉

Nefertiti was absolutely amazing as a pharaohs wife and queen, hated for reasons that made her an outlaw! I think her beautiful face was robbed of her right to join her husband Akhenaten in the after life just for the fact they changed the game during some really messed up times then. Hopefully I'm wrong and they find both of there tombs intact so she and he can join there son Tutankhamun in glory, may they live forever, she will remain my most favorite queen and he Akhenaten will be the greatest of all Egyptian history in my opinion

Hii. Actually her eye on her bust it made from quartz with black paint and glazed with beeswax. So the closest to that is dark hazel eyes.
