It’s an important make sure you go though your buddy checks before doing a negative entry. I’ve seen it so many time where they forgot to turn there air on, not enough weight, or didn’t empty there bcd. Next thing is there at the surface waiting and to be picked up by the boat to be re-dropped at the site due to the current pulled the past the site

Never ever suck the air out of your BCD unless you’ve sterilised it. This is how you give yourself a bacterial or fungal pneumonia (really bad lung infection!) Rebreather divers know all about this as cleaning is part of the aftercare of the unit. Otherwise… good advice:)

And be sure to prepare yourself to inflate your BCD once you're under the surface to avoid going down too fast without equalizing! I almost lost an eardrum that way :S

thanks as always! I really prefer negative entry versus bouncing around on top waiting for the group, kind of neat watching everyone descend . I do not recall much being taught on this in OW certification. It may cause some anxious moments for a new diver if not trained.

Totally agree. Most boats we’ve been on where we had to do this type of entry had at least one or two people onboard who had never done it, and you could tell they were a little anxious at first. The divemasters have been good and walked them through how to do it without incident, but we definitely think it should be talked about and practiced in OW certification when you’re learning deep water entries. Ah yeah, also known as the South Florida Hot Drop. That’s how I got on the Miller Light and the Hydro Atlantic. Don’t forget to empty all the gas out of your dry suit too. I almost missed the Hydro Atlantic in 4kt current because I had an air bubble. And for us tech divers, stay vertical for longer than normal before turning into normal horizontal trim - don’t turn until you are below 20ft and really feel the dry suit squeeze.
