If you shim evenly around the circumference of the bushings then they will be centred, so clearly, the answer is to wrap them in PTFE tape. You won't need much, just use a bit of what's left over from sealing the cylinder head, hop rubber, and packing around the barrel.

Don't forget to get the JB weld to push out enough to grab the gears so they get bonded in place, that way you know they will be shimmed perfectly 😏. Then use 75% of a tub-o-grease I mean dip those gears in the tub like you are dunking cookies in milk😅. Then when assembling make sure to alternate stripping heads and cross threading all the machine screws.

Thanks for the video! There are too many videos were bushings/bearings are glued and I was asking myself why the heck they do it. It just doesn't make sense, they can't go anywhere when the gearbox is closed and your arguments are perfect regarding the potential angle offset of the bearing/bushing.

99.9% of the time the bushings/bearings fall out but have nearly 0 actual side to side play. Rarely anyone uses JB weld, they use retaining compound. That is designed to still be removable, however keeps them in place solidly. Also, you can use Laylax centering pins. You'll know the bushings/bearings are perfectly aligned when the steel shaft in the middle moves 100% freely. In almost all cases, gluing is mandatory, especially at higher J output. Did you know the UK is not the only country on the planet? Here in Canada people want 30rps+ at 1.5J. Even bushings that are held in tight in gearboxes eventually come loose, and then grind away at the gearbox overtime making the hole bigger. Gluing is mandatory for any quality tech work, provided the gluing is done correctly.
@rogerborg
@rogerborg Жыл бұрын
You've seen side-to-side play once in a thousand cases? Interesting, Skylar.
@FrozenByFire3
@FrozenByFire3 Жыл бұрын
@@rogerborg the only time I had actual side to side bushing play was in a BOLT that I recently worked on. Literally every other gun I've worked on in the last 5 years did not have side to side play. In Canada, there's pretty much only g&g, VFC, KRYTAC and a couple other brands. All of them have pretty good bushing hole tolerances. I've had some quite loose, but the side to side play is less than 0.02mm meaningless in these crooked cast gearboxes anyways. I also primarily do high end stuff, and always use high quality components. The CNC bushings I use are a tad oversized by like 0.02-0.03mm so they tend to be a nice fit in otherwise slightly loose gearboxes. If a gearbox shell is too garbage, automatically delete it and install a retro arms if the client wants to go all out on that.

@@NegativeAirsoftTech here in Canada, I know of maybe 1 tech who glues in their bushings lol. I have indeed seen like 1-2 gearboxes with very poorly glued in bushings, but that was from someone who never did tech work either. Gluing bushings in is good, if done properly. Just like most things.

@@FrozenByFire3 and I see it all the time... I don't recall mentioning other techs though. My channel is for anybody who wants to see it & I'm trying to show people what not to do, that's explained within the video bud. I've not seen ANY pro techs in the UK JB welding bushings, never. But I do see chancers & "reddit experts" who have & that's why I end up with the AEG - cos it am fucked. VFC superglue their bearings in. Terrible idea because their gears are shit & when they break, they can bust the bearings along with it. I'm not trying to advise people who know what they're doing, but I am trying to stop new people from making an expensive mistake. Oh, the UK never had a "legal" power limit for decades and I'm very used to building 5-7j AEG's 😉

Honestly, I'd prefer to be able to push out my bearings or bushings so that way I don't mess with the shimming if I ever have to open up the gearbox for any reason unless I'm changing the gears anyways. I have no idea how I'm going to do that with my LCT because One of the bearings likes to get stuck on the axle of the sector gear and I have no idea how to get it off because it would seem that LCT gears are slightly off spec

Optimal bearings with J-cage can be around $40 for a set of 6 on the cheap side. Bushings however are around $10 for a basic steel set and last just as long. Really depends on preference and gearbox specifications. A lot of replicas still use 7mm and bearings for those are ALL bad.

@@NegativeAirsoftTech okay then tell me what wears out faster, casted random metal/7075 Aluminum gearbox shell or rotating steel bushings. I agree that there is a very real chance that bushings/holes can be so over/undersized that there is potential for errors if you glued them in, but the counter point to that argument is that is a relatively rare occurrence (generally happens when loose bushings have rotated over many tens of thousands of rounds and increasing the hole to allow serious movement). Having a loose bushing in that scenario wouldn’t made the situation better and arguably would increase stress due to allowing the axle to have serious play. As a completely random example, I have a 249 shell that has either the spur or sector bottom bushing hole drilled out at a angle thus meaning it has to be shimmed way looser in order for it to not make contact. The original gears saw at minimum 70k rounds through them before the sector axel got deleted due to the bearing blowing out. After replacing said sector/bearing with a bushing, it saw another 35-50k rounds without having a issue related to said misaligned hole (I am assuming we are generally referring to issues of gear teeth meshing/breaking, gear axels, or completely burning motors).
