Love this bit of advice. Before the travel restrictions I would “hire myself” to go somewhere and shoot for a week. A week in Tokyo shooting street, a week in Berlin shooting fashion, a week in Alaska shooting nature. These where the times when I felt I grew the most in my work.

Best advice ever man 👍 Another great thing to do is buying 2 or 3 (used, cheap) photography books from eBay or from some store. I did this with William Eggleston, Stephen Shore, and Vivian Maier and it really changed me as a photographer being able to see all their work printed.

I’ve recently been investing in printing my work more. It’s a skill I’ve been working on for years, and it really does help put the worth of camera gear into perspective. Cameras with more features and higher resolutions are fine, but I want better photographic ideas to try out and see how they look in a frame, with different paper finishes, or under various lighting conditions.

Even before the pandemic begun, I was already saving for a project. But now, thanks to it, with what I've saved for a project and my personal savings, I'm now in a position to buy my first property and move away from the South East (UK) to pursue places like North Wales, Peak District, Lake District etc. Something I hope to do by the summer of this year. Assuming the economy isn't screwed up more by then...

Give the same camera to two different people, one who has explored life and one who has only stayed in their little bubble and you will get two completely different images. Live, laugh, love, roam, dance freely and take in the personal viewpoints that allows you to express your greatest treasure of all, your ability to create from life experiences with any tool handed to you.

People buy gear because its easy. And they think that they can put a thousand or two in a new camera and the quality of their work will increase without doing anything else except that. From this perspective the investment in to the gear sounds very appealing. But the thing is that any camera these days is more than enough to achieve high end quality demands of any print. So its not the gear that matters. Building a descent portfolio however requires time, effort and money too. And what it gives you is just a set of pictures. This also speaks about how the photographer rates himself. Because if he cant invest time/money/effort in to making a picture it means he values his work very low, it means that those investments look not worthy enough to make even for himself. That way he sets his value to himself.

For sure but it also depends on the work you are trying to create. Gear should never be the first investment as it doesn't improve the quality but it can change the method/approach, which is something you speak about in relation to large format quite a bit. How do you think Lonely Cloud would feel if you created or completed it on 35mm? I'm not having a dig, I just think there is quite a bit more nuance to this than is often portrayed by (very respectable) people online who also just so happen to have all of the gear...
@NegativeFeedback
@NegativeFeedback 3 жыл бұрын
It wouldn’t exist on 35mm, but I’ve shot digital images in the larger edit so it’s not really as much of a problem of gear. And actually I’m only using that film for consistencies sake
@TheCyanideSon

@@NegativeFeedback Fair, I think consistency is very important! @@NegativeFeedback Because there is no reasonable way up (in terms of gear) to go. LF is a de facto standard of fine-art photography. I think it is often overlooked in terms of how much it gives in the perceived quality of an image and consequently someone's project/body of work. Believe it or not, I do get your message, and for the most part, I agree with you.
