Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary I used to have ducks (Muscovy ducks) and they were absolutely adorable pets... it pained me to see these animals having to re-learn what it meant to be ducks because of human neglect... that they were actually AFRAID of the pond at first... it sickens me that people can be so cruel as to deny an animal its very nature.

I had a few peking ducks(the typical white ducks you see in parks) that I bought from a live poultry market. I doubt these birds had any water experience before I got them, but I had a little fifteen gallon bird bath in my yard and they loved that thing. I eventually took them to the local park, released them at the shore of the pond, and they hit that water like gangbusters and never looked back. These ducks would have went in the water if the people weren't trying to chase them in. Once one bird entered the pond, there would soon be all of them in there.Almost all birds love water, because it is good for their plumage.

I adopted a 9 month old puppy that never walked on grass. She was tied to a pipe so she could not get off of 5 feet of news papers. Fortunately I had an old dog who helped her learn to be a dog. As with the ducks here, some people should not be allowed to have any kind of animals.

Is there a reason you didn't just put them in an enclosure with water and let them figure it out on their own? it seems a bit unneccesary to force them in the water, even if they end up liking it

+rathmiron I was thinking the same thing. I had hoped a "sanctuary" would know better. Those poor ducks have suffered all of their lives so let's harass them for a few minutes for our own entertainment? No need to let them feel safe in their new home if we can get a video that will brighten peoples day. Also if a duck was not introduced to water at a young age it will not properly develop it's waterproof coating. That's why they look soaking wet at the end. A duck can sink and drown in those situations. Hopefully they handle their other animals better.

Awesome video! We just had our rescue ducks have their first swim as well... What is now years later than your rescue flock. We only have 4 ducks, so far the 2 new rescues have had a good integration with the one older one. The other is a rebel, loner, and well... Broody to boot lol.

I wish you were closer to where I live! We rescued two pekin ducks last month that were abandoned at our pond. We called everybody and not a single person was able to take them, so we kept them with us for a while and had them swimming in the bathtub haha! They settled in and started laying eggs for us, which was cool. Fortunately a woman from animal control who has had mallards before was able to take them a few days ago, and now they have access to water all the time. :)
