I’m an Afro-Latina and found it interesting that the group kept referring to themselves as “brown”. I understand how it was intended, but would’ve liked them to state what they actually identify as in terms of race on legal government forms. Hispanic, or “brown” is considered an ethnicity and not a race. I’d be curious to know what race box each member of the group would select for themselves, especially since “brown” is not an option. Even in our own countries, we must identify as a race….I wonder if they’d feel differently about their selections while filling out a form in their own countries and while filling one out here. Personally, whether back home or here in the U.S., I’ve always selected “yes” in the ethnicity box to indicate that I’m Hispanic and Black in the race box. Therefore, I’m legally identified as a “Black Hispanic”. To be clear, this does not indicate that I’m of mixed race like someone who is white and black(even though we’re all mixed). It means that I’m a Hispanic by ethnicity and culture, but black by race. Hence, Afro-Latina.

In countries like Brazil for example a lot of people we see as light skin black would be seen as either whites or pardos depending how dark, white passing or racially ambiguous they are. What exactly is even a brown person ? Someone with brown skin or anybody with proximity to people seen as brown like everyone in this group

Depending on the census and how it’s written , most people identify as Latino first and foremost but if they’re made to choose, most people who aren’t obviously dark, choose white. Even if they’re not. It’s a crapshoot white supremacist “whitehood” that counts when you’re kicking down the person below you on the ladder but it still isn’t real whiteness imo.

This! I worked at a medical front desk. When people filled out the optional demographics sheet, the spectrum Hispanic and Latinos patients that looked like everyone on the panel (except most of the Afro Latinas that look like the masked lady on the far left) would put white. Even very indigenous looking ones or some who probably could be considered Afro-Latino but were light brown or mixed race. Some Afro-Latino’s would check Hispanic but refused to check black. I’ve personally known many Afro- Latinos to make a point to declare they’re not black they’re * nationality*. It’s always bizarre to me but I am aware of the different reasons. Some people don’t believe in race and feel it’s a conce This! Hispanic people are majority mestizo or indigenous, which is brown. Race is socially constructed. They could include the brown category in the race box tomorrow if they wanted to.

I identify as a multiracial individual because I'm Black, White and Ingenious. Because I was born in the 1940s and in the USA I am considered Black on paper but I am always asked, what's your race? When I travel to other countries I'm never considered as Black. I do speak Spanish fluently for having studied in Mexico for many years. At times it depends on the situation how I will identify, especially going to a doctor -because some of them are prejudice.

Colorism is every where y’all and I had my most blatant experience the other day when I took a client to a French restaurant and the waiter was telling another one in French how he didn’t want our table while stroking his skin. I’m a medium tan latino and my client was black. He didn’t understand what was being said but I lived in Paris two years and understood everything. Now because of the environment we were in I could only politely tell off a manager but if we had been anywhere else I woulda been loud and rude. It’s degrading and had I been younger I woulda felt bad instead of agitated. We need to do better as a society

My girl who’s darker skinned Latina always told me she felt more confident going places with me because she could see how much better I would get treated compared to as if she went by herself or with her family. I don’t feel white among white Americans but I do feel a bit white among Latinos.

do you realize that while a huge chunk of Caribbean origin (and that includes many beautiful black Colombian and Venezuelans) Latinos are mixed or predominantly 'black', most Latinos are not? The overwhelming majority of Latinos are of mostly mixed indigenous and white. That's not to say that there's not African blood in a huge segment, it's not that noticeable for many of us. Take for example Mexicans: while there are pockets where the African admixture is obvious.... most of the people in that country of 130 million are not black. And in the US Mexicans/Mexican-Americans account for almost 2/3rds of ALL Latinos in this country.

I’m Mexican and my moms side of the family is very fair, and they always use the word light to describe someone being pretty. My next door neighbor is also Mexican and she has one daughter who is darker than the others and she’s always saying how her youngest (who is the lightest in skin tone) is the prettiest simply because she’s the most fair in skin tone. Sad.

Very true. I had genuinely thought that all Latinos were very fair skinned, some even appearing Caucasian until I met and started dating a Dominican man from Bajos de Haina. My first trip to see him, I step off the plane and see this beautiful mix of brown people in the airport and I go "WOW!". I couldn't believe it. Nearly everybody looked like me. He joked with me that the only way they'd know I wasn't one of them is when I speak. I've been taking birthday trips to DR for like 4 years until COVID hit. I really can't wait to go back because I love it there.

@@Nonamelol. okay that's not true! 1st off hispanics like Sofia Vergada, The Cast of Stuck in the Middle, and the 2 hispanic girls from Euphoria, are examples of shows choosing hispanics with more western features. Plus I'm talking about Hispanic and Latino speaking countries that revere white beauty while failing to recognize the darker shades of ppl. Plus America usually does have a diverse cast of hispanics/Latinos; so don't say that. Also for American television they usually depict hispanics with stereotypes, like the Spicy Latina trope or just slap hispanic on a character without elaborating their roots. And it's even sadder that the US as least allows Hispanics POC to at least be represented while hispanic/Latino countries don't do the same!

See that distinction is easy to draw on paper but when you look at the Latinos as an ethnic group where race is intimately tied to so many aspects of this ethnic identity, things start to get complicated and murky really fast. That dichotomy you mentioned between race and ethnicity becomes less and less clear the harder you look and the more you pull things apart.

this topic for me is confusing for me. Our own community will fight over who is "too dark" or "too white" to be considered Latino. This ends up in erasure of all our cultures and backgrounds. If you geniuinely want to call someone out for not being "xyz" enough, then ask them for a time and date to discuss what their upbringing is. Otherwise, stop assuming they're not enough in your eyes. All my life I was very dark. Once I got to my late teens, I decided to take care of my skin. Which meant skin creams, sunscreen, etc. My skin tone went from a mid dark brown to a light shade of brown. People who use meet me dismiss my struggles that I faced and still do to this day because I may have lighter skin. I still have my beautiful ethnic features. White people will look at us all the same at the end of the day.

This really hits me where I live; I have a murky Latinx background, but am definitely Hispanic, but I am extremely pale, with blonde hair. I experience an odd kind of racism; if a white person "meets" me by name first ie emails or appointments or online, they act one way, and if they meet me face to face, they act another. When they meet me in person, after having met me by name, their naked surprise is so exhausting, and at this point, expected. You can then set a timer for how long it takes them to ask what my ethnicity is (or worse, "nationality"). They always think they are being subtle, but they aren't.

Being a hella mixed Latino colorism will always exist in every culture and every race unfortunately. Especially in Latin America where the culture always frowns upon darker skin and native or afro features. It's a shame when most of us are of mixed descent and have abuelas tios etc that look so different from us but still give us unconditional love

It happens in my own family too. My great grandpa who came from Puerto Rico wasn't really nice to my cousins who were fair, but treated my siblings and I who were the same color as him nice. But my grandma who was moreno was the opposite! We would get told to stay out of the sun because we'd get too "negrito".

Completely agree! My (white) grandma didnt want my mom marrying my dad for being too dark skinned (and was afraid we, the children, would come out freckled redheads?? for some reason?); but she learned. By the time I was old enough to understand, he was her favourite son-in-law; and I can't remember her treating my older sister (who is darker) differently than me. While my sister and I are the darker ones on the white side of the family (my mom was the only sister that didn't marry another german-descendant) I never really felt it. My sister, who is "trigueña", I believe has struggled with this in school. As a toddler she didn't want to be told she was darker (she is older, and thinking about it now I can see my grandma/grandpa/their generation commenting on it in a "jokingly" manner, and the "anecdote" is told in the same way). Now tho, many of our white relatives/friends are jealous of her complexion and her ability to tan.

As a white skinned Latina I have had people darker than me tell me I not Hispanic and that even if my last name was Reyes and I had an accent people would not believe I was a Latina and I've had white people tell me to go back to my country and to speak proper ingles so I disagree that light skin Latinos can't face heavy racism everyone can.

That’s not racism but xenophobia Edit: in the US, Latin Americans here are stigmatized because the majority come from developing countries and from working class/poor backgrounds and many of them are on the darker side of the skin color spectrum. There is no such thing as a Latino race or appearance contrary to what an American thinks of what they imagine a latine is supposed to look like. But because many of the undocumented immigrants coming from these countries is a brown person of lower resources there’s less empathy and sympathy for them as opposed to economic migrants from places like Europe where the majority of the population is a homogenous group fair in skin color like Ukrainians. It’s a paradox Latino culture for the most part is pretty Eurocentric since the majority comes from a Spanish speaking(euro language) Christian background. So the main factors white Americans judge and look down on Latinos for is that we’re from developing countries with a lot of brown and black people and how much proximity we don’t have to “pure whiteness” . The main conclusion to draw from this is that regardless of your nationality, religious background or language the fact that your a brown or black skinned person your just looked down upon whatever you do and that’s something white Latin Americans like for example Sofia Vergara or Guillermo del toro will never face.

As a white Latinx I feel you I’ve been told not to speak Spanish and faced being accused of not being Latinx/o but I have never had fear of being stopped by the police bc of my appearance or killed or beaten by the color of my skin . Now I have witnessed a lot micro aggressions towards me and other light skinned Latinos it’s wrong and sad but it’s not heavy racism . Heavy racism is fearing for your life ,job security,your safety. I can move throughout USA the most part without dealing with it . I don’t have an accent but I did when I was little and saw how that effected how people treated my mom . so I understand that’s a privilege I have that you don’t . Even my last name protects me bc it is not Latino. Only my passport birth place Colombia gets me searched almost every plane trip . Is it fair no but I know it would be 100% worse if I was dark skinned. I think as white Latinos we need to acknowledge that our brown and black counterparts deal with some scary shit . But trying to equate people being mean to you for being light skinned to what dark skin Latinos go through just comes off petty. We need to acknowledge we are fighting the same fight against white supremacy.bc every dark Latino that says your not Latino it comes from real place of being hurt. White Latinos that haven’t gone through their experiences and I’m grateful that i probably never will . I feel your hurt but just not the same . I think we should try to not to focus on what’s is heavy or light that all this racist shit is not ok and all a by product of white supremacy. I feel to a better ally and dismantle racism we need to acknowledge white privilege .I think acknowledging that alot people face more serious discrimination than I will ever doesn’t take away from my experiences .

Always a great conversation to have since there's colorism in every culture/background. I always find it odd that some people think racism only involves White people. Any- and everyone can be racist. The belief or practice was historically by one race, but it's evolved since then. 9/11 and the recent spree of attacks on Asians have shown that all people can engage in racist behavior.

Racism is largely understood to be systemic. In the USA, there is 1 group that controls said system. Anyone can be prejudiced. Anyone can be discriminatory. Anyone can be a bigot. Anyone can be a white supremacist. Not everyone has the power to wield those things against others, hence the widely held belief that non white people can't be racist. Words mean things, and there are plenty of resources to help you not find these concepts odd.

I think a big issue here is that some white passing Latines have a hard time identifying as white because culturally and through our own experiences we don’t resonate with white/American culture. BUT based on skin color because we can be perceived as white we do have privileges compared to our darker skin toned Latine community and that undeniably offers a different and less privileged experience. I say less privilege because there’s also the issue of citizenship and how that offers privilege compared to undocumented folx.

White Latinos are typically treated better but they still face a level of marginalization and othering by US whites. In my experience European/US white people don’t view them as “also white” despite similar skin color. They clock facial features, names and accents and gate keep better than anybody. That being said it’s obviously more difficult the darker skin you are.

I still remember the Afro-Latina host of Noticias on Telemundo getting harassed a couple of years back and she’s one of the few. Tbh, these conversations will get harder when it comes to jobs at the makeup counter, receptionists and media where Afros and Indigenous have been hidden from whether due to perception or Adelante de la raza. @@Marcusjo18 not really. Let me explain why. When I taught school as a paraprofessional for 10 years, my boss asked me why I was an instructor. He flat out told me my people belong in custodial and if I didn’t like what he said that I could take it up with administration and see if they cared. And he was right, administration didn’t care. I used to live on a predominantly white town in Oregon. White people constantly clocked my indigenous features. They always made sure I understood my place amongst them. So, even those of us who are white passing or lighter skinned than our darker skinned brown kin, we still get discriminated against due to our race, therefore it is racism. I’m 30% Native American according to my DNA profile. I do NOT consider myself to be white. I most definitely suffer from racism. I know I have it better than my darker skinned peeps. But that doesn’t mean racism doesn’t affect me too.

I live in a weird realm of not being accepted fully by either culture. If I didn’t say anything I could pass as a white Latina or just a white person. Other Latinos will recognize me and my name and assume I’m Spanish and white people will look only at my skin and say I’m white. Being a no sabes kid means that I get called a “spicy white person” or not a “true Hispanic” and both white people and Latinos discount my experience of growing up in a half Spanish family. From other stories I’ve heard, I definitely feel for mixed people and their struggle of not being fully accepted from either side.

As a white Mexican I’ve personally never experienced any actual racism or discrimination. Though the colorism I experienced isn’t as bad as that of darker skinned Latinos, it still doesn’t feel great to be told I’m not Hispanic or people denying my heritage simply because I came out a shade lighter. When being biracial it’s always a 50/50 shot when it comes to which side you look more like. It’s not something we can control. Hell I have cousins who are less Hispanic than me but they still look more Hispanic than me. I was never raised around the culture or community, because my mother wasn’t either(not something she had control over). But I’ve done my best in recent times to learn the culture and try to be apart of it. Regardless, no matter my efforts to integrate the culture into my life and how much pride I have of my heritage, I still don’t feel accepted into the community. I’m 50% Mexican and 50% white, you’d think someone of two races would be accepted into both communities but that’s hardly ever the case. That isn’t just limited to half white people. In general, I wish I could’ve grown up around the culture because it’s an amazing culture, and many times I wish I was just a tone darker just so I could be accepted into the community. I know looking white has given me benefits, but I wish I could just feel accepted into my own ethnic community because I am nothing but proud of my Hispanic heritage. But it is what it is I guess.

I'm an Afro Latina but was raised as a Black woman. I don't know my Dominican roots because I was given up for adoption at 4yrs. An Italian and Black-American raised me. Because my DNA is so mixed up people don't see me as Black and can't figure out what I am when first meeting me. I can pass for Egyptian, Middle Eastern, Jamaican, Guyanese, Moroccan or Native American. The craziest label I've ever gotten is being call Swedish or Bulgarian. The darker one might get racism in the US but the brighter one everywhere. That's my experience.

Nah, racism has a lot to do with power, the closer you are to whiteness you’re not going to experience racism the same way that other racial groups may go through. White people may experience Prejudice, bigotry, or xenophobia but not racism

Im light skinned and i have experienced racism at work, stores, subways, and im really sick of the latin race problem being between afro latinoes and the rest of us. Most of us are multiple ethnicities and you hardly ever hear about indigenous discrimination and erasure and moat latinoea have more indigenous anceatry than african. By skin color he is white. If anyone can’t see that then they are blind. Now genetically, he still most likely is white dominant given his phenotype but still has native admixture since it also appeared in his facial phenotype. But I guess we’ll never know for sure unless he takes a dna test. Also you don’t have to be 100 percent a certain race to be that race just have the physical features and be that race dominantly in terms of genetics. Since thats what race is, shared physical characteristics among a group of people.

A conversation that needs to happen more in our community. Colorism leaves deep scars that last a long time. People definitely need to admit and check their privilege. These conversations are difficult, but necessary. The more we talk about it, the more we normalize acknowledging how wrong it is and call it out more.

These people are most likely Americans thinking that they come from Latin America, that’s the reason why they are so obsessed over race.
