I had neighbors like this, always a complaint. The wife liked confronting me directly. It always started with "We have a problem..." Once my dog got out a wooo before I shut her up. She saw the kids at the bus stop. It only happened once, and I received the call. God forbid when the leaves fell. After months of bedrest, technically dying and two surgeries, she didn't miss the opportunity to confront me. The first time, I walked around my yard. " We have a problem, the leves between your bushes is unsightly and you need to fix it" I straightened her azz out and never spoke again. Funny the new owners exposed, they weren't so perfect, and some of the botched home improvements could have burned down the house.

I don't understand why the cops even listened to the neighbour. The should have told her it was none of their business.

OP was foolish... The moment he discovered Shirley was spreading Lies about him, she should have called his Lawyer to Sue the Unholy Howling HELL out of her for Slander, Libel, Defamation, Stalking and Harassment... He should have installed Security Cameras to capture Shirley's Trespassing and then call the Police to Press Charges for Stalking, Trespassing and Harassment... I would have...

Move into a new neighborhood and meet the new neighbor, who was there when you arrived and has done nothing more suspicious than offer any help you might need, and accuse HIM of not belonging. Sheesh! Who doesn't belong?

The OP should of went to the solictor when it first happened and not waited!!! There are laws in England that besides libel and slander hold that any communications rhat is done in bad faith that smears a persona name shall be held criminal liable!!!
