Darlene, be proud of yourself. As a retired registered nurse I have given many amps of D50. It can be very scary when someone's blood sugar bottoms out. You literally saved Joe's life. The old bitties trying to tell Joe how to handle his diabetes just don't understand what a " brittle" diabetic goes through. Give yourself a big pat on the back and just continue to enjoy being true to yourself.

My 67 year old mother just broke her ankle and is bedridden. This has been the hardest thing I've ever had to do. I don't know how you took care of your mother for decades. You are one strong cookie, Darlene. My mom has diabetes and I'm the one responsible for giving her medicine and checking her blood sugar. Damn, what a full time job! As I was typing this, her alarm went off with a 60 blood sugar warning. Then I give her root beer and chips, mow it's 201. It's a neverending battle. What's totally freaking awesome is when that sumabitch alarm goes off at 3 a.m.!

Hi here! I’m a caregiver to a diabetic also & I follow a bunch of diabetics who share their diabetes reversals stories. Is that something your mom might be interested in? The people get rid of a bunch of other diabetes complications when they slowly (or quickly) start to reverse it. If she’s interested, Dr Eric Westman, Dr Tony Hampton and Dr Ken D Berry turned to KZbin to share what they’ve learned after seeing almost all of their patients reverse type 2 diabetes over and over. They were shocked at first because we’ve always been told it was a progressive disease. The number of people feeling better and getting off meds and the blood sugar rollercoaster schedule is astounding. Sending all the best and of course feel free to respond any time. I just didn’t want to waste your time so I figured I’d send ya the doctors names. I also follow detailed stories of hundreds of patients who are still in shock of their healing so they share their stories. I also follow nutritional scientists, engineers, cancer specialists & studies, heart surgeons & cardiologists, and hard to say what else. After dabbling in diabetes care I ended up down the rabbit hole of all of those risks & complications so it’s never ending I tell ya. The only relief for me was with continuing my education to find something that worked. 🤪

Especially since he lived alone by himself with no one to be there when he has these episodes. That is so scary. Y'all remember the nosey neighbor on Bewitched Mrs. Kravitz? 😁 When I still wore a bra I'd do the old hook the hooks and spin them around to the back then slide my arms into the straps. At 72 I no longer torcher myself with bras, wear very baggy shirts, and let those saggy puppies swing low. Yep, could tuck them into an elastic waistband if need be. Y'all have a good day.

I know what you mean. I live with roommates and would probably go braless if I lived alone except I feel weird doing that with them around. I go for sports bras. They are practically like putting a T-shirt on. I recently got a real bra, it's been years and I always do the hooks from the front and spin it around. I haven't been able to hook those from the back since my younger more slender days lol.

Darlene - my brother is a type 1 brittle diabetic and I we have used several things at home to bring him back from an episode like that. The first is a Glucagon shot - it is not given in the vein, it is given in a muscle (usually arm or thigh). It is a little more complicated to use because you have a small vial with powder, and a syringe full of saline. You inject saline into the vial, shake it up, pull it back into the syringe and give the injection. What we use now which I recommend highly is Baqsimi. It is basically like Narcon, but for diabetics. It it a dry spray, you put it up to their nostril and push the plunger. It is MUCH easier to use when you are having anxiety because you cannot rouse them. We've been where you have, have had to call the ambulance MANY times when he was younger. Now he is doing great, but does occasionally have low blood sugars so we keep these on hand. If he doesn't have insurance, Baqsimi has a patient assistance program where you can get it for free. Hope this helps :)
@darlene.michaud8 ай бұрын
I will read ask Joe about that spray. I would love to have that on hand. And he does not have insurance so I'll look into Baqsimi too. Thank you!
@jendangelo82258 ай бұрын
@@darlene.michaud You should be able to get either on patient assistance! He will need a doctor to work through to get the scripts, but it will make you feel SO much better to have it on hand. It gives so much peace. My bro has been diabetic for 20 years now, and while he is more controlled now, he is still a brittle diabetic, and it is absolutely NOT because he doesn't take care of himself. You're a great person for taking it on and caring so much!!

One thing that helped with the mornings lows for my mom (insulin dependent 50+ years) was to split dose her long acting insulin, but that's a conversation to have with the endocrinologist. Looking forward to Joe's sewing journey between blood sugar swings!!
@terryhenderson4248 ай бұрын
We split the long acting by 12 hours; have for years. We continue to fine tune the number of units but less at night than in the morning has been a constant. We switched up the fast acting dosing with 1 unit per 25 points starting at 150. The standard dose given was 2 units per 50 points starting at 150. This results in 1 unit for between 150 and 175, 2 units from 175 to 200, 3 units for 200 to 225.

Darlene, Joe can get glucagon and you can just draw it up in the syringe and he will snap out of his sugar stupor immediately. Maybe D15 is similar, sure sounds like it but glucagon has saved me many trips in an ambulance...They also have glucose tablets, they look like sweet tarts but are orange in a bottle and when Joe feels or you notice his sugar is dropping, just pop those and suck on them until he eats. Also, that damn pump did not work on this brittle diabetic either. I have had it for over 60 years now. Good luck. It's a pain in a diabetics ass and it's exhausting.....
