The house from A Christmas Story was restored and the interior made to look like it was in the movie. They offer tours for a small fee. Take all the pictures you like, just don't shoot your eye out.

People that buy that sort of house would probably much rather have some peace and quiet after making a lot more money at their real jobs than whatever 20$ tickets you can sell to give tours lol. The last thing you want is to come Home after a long day and Joe dumbass and his family are in your living room repeatedly asking “is this the window Marv came in!? omg Sharon come look at where marv came in! So the ornaments would have been right here!!! 🤦🏼‍♂️ But I get your joke and laughed lol 😁

I think what really made this house iconic wasn't just that the movie itself happened in it ( there are many movies in which that happens and the houses are forgettable ), not just because Kevin used its rooms as death traps lol but in my opinion it was because it really transpired the family vibe right off the bat. The introductory scenes with people running around, the big dinners, uncles, cousins and brothers being obnoxious... We all experienced that in our own way, most especially during Christmas time. Kevin wanted to protect all of that when he waged war against those bandits, it wasn't just about the house itself but what it represented for him.

I was told that they decorated the inside of the film house to match the inside of the real house and build the house on a sound stage

Most likely. I’m sure they were limited with the things they could do in the real house.
@bellthandian
@bellthandian 3 жыл бұрын
Yes they did. Only exterior shots were used for the film, though they did mimic the inside layout of the house. As far as decor goes, a lot was done more over the top than the real interiors, as they chose to use a color palette of greens and reds to fit in with the overall Christmas vibe. From the last listing when the house was for sale, you can see that the layout was almost 100% the same minus a few details. I believe the entire house set was all built in a gymnasium from a behind the scenes clip I saw a few years back about the making of. Would’ve risked too much damage to the real house had they used the interiors for many of the shenanigans in the movie

Fun fact, when they were filming Home Alone, they set up their production offices and the sound stage in New Trier High School. That’s where both my uncles, my aunt, and my grandmother went to high school.

So the people who brought the house had no interest in its story and has no interest in the fans, but they undoubtedly paid well over the market value for the house because it's such a famous house so I don't know if I'm missing something..

Exactly!! People are saying it’s their house, their privacy, etc. But seriously? Obviously they paid more for this house knowing it was in a famous movie. And they don’t want a bunch of people looking at it?? Maybe should have thought of it before buying a famous house?

i work on a show and we have people called "location managers" who have to find the locations that is described, check with the surrounding neighbors if filming will be okay on certain dates, look for spots for lunch, dinner, trailers, etc the week before shooting, and when actually shooting, anytime theres an issue or someone needs to find out where something is, they call for the location manager. ive had to call the location manager for a Karen who changed her mind about us filming a scene across the street. she would only change her mind if her three teenage "roommates" / friends ????? (she was in her late 40s) can come eat with the cast and crew when we call for lunch. instead, we gave them a plate and then told them all to fuck off when it was time for us to eat, cuz we were done filming anyway that felt SO good lol this was my longgggasss story time with the answer to your question hidden somewhere in there :D

It fit their budget, their location, and fit their floor plan needs. But I'm pretty sure they didn't buy the house because of the history so that they could hide it from the people.

I liked Home Alone 1 more than Home Alone 2. Home Alone 1 is set in Chicago. I went to school in northern Indiana. I developed a real fondness for Chicago. It had a real big-city feel. I liked the architecture. The tall buildings. The lake front in the summer. I can always recognize a Chicago accent. John Hughes set most of his movies in Chicago.
