I think you are referring to the idea of a company acting as an HOA as opposed to a neighbourhood volunteer HOA. We had a volunteer run HOA in my neighbourhood in NS, but it was voted out of existence in 2008. I haven't heard of anyone saying they would like to see it brought back.

They said that a new board of directors must be formed in order to fire the management company. I would think that the management companies contract was nullified when the HOA was dissolved in 2007. He has no right to collect or keep their money from that point on. Then he tries to have the state change the HOA status. He is not a part of the HOA or community.

I have seen videos where the busy bodies go up to peoples unit and peak inside their place, and also poke around there back yard, looking for infractions. Some even use Google Maps images and then send people thousands of dollars in fines for infractions, such as having a small tool shed.

An HOA should only be in existence by the consent of the homeowners who should have the legal recourse to expel the HOA with a majority vote to do so. HOA's would be a lot more reasonable if they could be ran off if they got out of hand or didn't live up to their part of the contract.

Something people may not be aware of, these “build to rent communities” owned by a big corporation with over 10k properties are changing $125 a month for “HOA fees” $1.25 million a month, 15 million a yr, but the corporation is the HOA, tack on another 6.6 million in amenities fees and you can see the incentives to do this. Currently battling one that wants to charge us an extra $270 a month in community fees for a community we don’t even live in, our rental isn’t even in their community, now their charging us an extra 300 plus daily fees because we wouldn’t sign the new lease because of these charges!! Can’t afford to move can’t afford to stay!!

I bought land where this was happening. For 50 years a neighborhood was paying dues to an HOA then I bought their main City park. People went nuts saying it was a park, but it wasn't, the county said tax hadn't been paid for 50 years, so it was foreclosed at that time. Someone finally discovered the paperwork and gave me the number to the HOA... they were all dead. So I ended up buying the land after two notices were sent to everyone in that plat, and it was so trashed they passed. I bought it and rented a skid loader and spent a month cleaning it up. It's beautiful now.

All HOA's in USA should have Term limits of no longer then 4 years PERIOD. After 4 Years. A Complete New Board members Must be Chosen. I think that should be like a Federal Law or Have it so Every State Must have that as a Law. btw HOAs do suck. there are just so few HOA's out there that actually do things right. IE have relaxed rules, hardly any fines at all. Friend of mine has lived in a HOA for 15 years now. Only has gotten one Fine during entire time. it was when he first moved into the HOA and Was his fault really and has always admitted that he should have taken care of it alot sooner and that was for having grass way way to long. we are taking knee high grass before a Fine was issued. Fine was only $20 though. He ignored a letter the HOA sent about his grass a month before the Fine was giving. Now he has someone that comes at least every 3 weeks. like what 90% of the other members do. Lot of the houses, yes could use repainting. but, if it looks decent enough they are pretty much left alone.

He got scared and said he only get $20...but the books show $200. How to prove the fraud? Also, another one was about snow removal services. Called the contractor before hearing from the manager of the mgmt company. And the contractor said :$2500....A week later the manager said: $12500...started complaining and found that the contractor agreed to the set up but being scared he reduced the invoice with $5000. Still I demanded proof but then the HOA President forbid anyone to speak with me

Cities love HOAs because the HOAs police properties, freeing City Code Enforcement Officers --which in turn allows the City to collect Property Taxes but not take responsibility for the management of Residential Property. i sitll don't get HOA's. I have heard people say, it's to prevent your neighbor from leaving junk on their lawn. What the heck do you pay property taxes for? That is the cities job to handle that through fines/code enforcement. If you have that many people around you that live that way, maybe that says something about where you live (the area of the country), because i can assure this is not a universal problem all over the United States. Most people want there property value to be as high as possible, so they aren't going to leave broken down cars and washing machines on their front lawns.

I am very split when it comes to HOA’s. I feel as if they could be helpful and useful in some neighborhoods. However, there are plenty of them that go too far. Finding that balance of trying to keep our neighborhoods clean, safe & pleasant vs knit picking the length of the grass or how tall the shrubs are…. I could give so many good and bad points for both sides of this argument. Like I said I’m definitely split w how I feel

If an HOA is well-managed, it is to the advantage of home owners to have one. We had one when we lived in town and it was a good one. HOAs will do things like insist each homeowner satisfactorily maintains their home and lot, grooms lawns and trees, no painting of bright neon colored houses, maintains common areas, enforces nuisance pet and noise ordinances, etc. Our old HOA did all that and more, plus they maintained several large parks and playgrounds and put in a dog park for residents. And it was cheap. $62/month. In other words, they keep the place looking nice, peaceful, livable and keep up property values.
