The Day Before You Came is one of the most stunning cover versions and songs of the eighties or indeed the last forty years. I love the Abba version but the Blancmange version is better in my view. The vocals are first class and really convey the sense of drama of the lyric. The video blending footage of Agnetha from Abba is masterly. The change of lyric from reading something by Marilyn French to Barbara Cartland, with the author's name enunciated in a Lancashire accent is a great twist. I think I read that the change was because the UK audience would not be as familiar with Marilyn French. Waves, I Can See It and Why Can't They Leave Things Alone? are also brilliant songs. Seems so unfair that Why Can't They Leave Things Alone was not a hit when it was remixed for the single in 1986. I saw them live in Liverpool in 2012 but they did not do The Day Before You Came. Oh, well. The TOTP performance of it is excellent, quintessentially 1984. My wife, who is not a fan, concedes that the scarf worn on TOTP by Neil is very stylish!

As a 61 year old heavy metal fan from Peckham in S.E.London(mostly English/british heavy metal which to me is the best) i first heard blamanche just after their 1st album came out and i was and still am very impressed...in my opinion its gary numan, depeche mode and blamanche who are the tops...Neil is an extremely talented geezer-great writer, great singer and has been consistently good over the years and still is...and he comes accross as a lovely fella...have always meant to see them and i DEFINITELY will soon-2023/24...another reason to be proud to be british, does anyonw know how theeir received in america cos depeche mode became massive in the states?

Another great interview lads. Really interesting. Neil comes across as such a down to earth bloke. I was a big fan of Blancmange back in the eighties. I bought the 2011 come back album 'Blanc Burn' when it came out but was really disappointed by it. Then I heard Stephen had left the group due to ill health. I haven't bought anything since by the group apart from 'The Blanc Tapes' boxset. However the newer tracks that you have played snippets of throughout the video sound really good. So I might have to check out the more recent stuff in greater detail. Thanks for more great content.

I was just at the Islington Assembly Hall gig in London last night which was absolutely brilliant. It was the last night of the 2022 tour too so it's no wonder Neil's got a gammy knee after all those dates! It was was a really great show though although no 'The day before you came' (slap on the wrist Mr Arthur)! The first time I ever saw Blancmange was when they were the support act for Grace Jones when she did her One Man Show at the Lyceum in London in the early '80's. That was one of the best concerts I've ever seen but I'd never heard of Blancmange at that point, I liked what I heard though. Then success rightly came their way & I've followed them ever since. The London, Hammersmith Palais gig was one I remember as being particularly fantastic at the time. I do miss the backing singer girls though I must admit. They definitely added that extra something to the Blancmange sound as well as to the live shows. Whatever happened to them? The new album is one of their best methinks with some great tunes that really grow on you. It was so good to come across this interview after last night's show explaining where Neil is at right now. He must be absolutely knackered after the long tour now though so I hope he can put his feet up, slippers on & have a good rest over the holiday period. Thanks to Neil for keeping Blancmange going strong for over 40 years & long may he continue!! Thanks to you guys for another great interview too. You must be having so much fun interviewing so many major artists of the 80's electronic scene. It is very much appreciated!

@@electroniccafemusic I very much look forward to seeing what's coming next year. I know Electronic Cafe is basically set as a review of the 80's scene but there is one album from '79 that was a precursor for a lot of the 80's output. That being the amazing Sparks album 'The Number One Song In Heaven' produced by Giorgio Moroder. Sparks were the first rock group to go electronic disco & they've influenced many of the 80's bands with their stage act of singer & weirdo on the keyboards. Pet Shop Boys, Erasure, Soft Cell & Blancmange for example. If you've mentioned it before I apologise but Sparks are finally getting the recognition they deserve after last year's successful documentary about them. They continue to make relevant new music still & are doing two nights at the Royal Albert Hall next May which is really quite incredible after over 50 years in the business. An interview with Ron & Russell Mael would be fantastic & I'm sure they would be open to it as well. Just a suggestion, fingers crossed.

Brilliant interview with a lovely humble guy who has no rock star coolness - just a lot of talent, a capacity for hard work. and a very big heart. I would deeply urge people who have not done so to explore the blancmange renaissance there has been since 2010 - there have been some absolutely brilliant tracks as well as some vintage dead pan blancmange humour (I am thinking of tracks like I'm having a coffee on Blancburn) To just take that album there is also the wonderful Western which is really an undiscovered dance hall smash. (The same is also true for acid tongue off Semi Detatched) God Bless you Neil Arthur and keep on with the fantastic work.

@@andymcnab6848 My utter pleasure. It is groups like Blancmange that help me through life. I remember when blancmange were on top of the pops in 1982 with living on the ceiling. I was ten years old and I immediately thought this song is absolutely brilliant. I found the use of the Indian instruments so exciting. This was at the time when I believe Neil Arthur had to sing "I'm up the cuckoo tree" because "I am up the bloody tree" was considered too risque by the BBC.
