Neil Brand has made a steady and impressive contribution to BBC radio over the last twenty or thirty years, including several dramatisations of ghost stories including The Haunting of M.R. James, which starred Mark Gatiss. Brand and Gatiss work together again here, in the latest of what Brand refers to as 'concert dramas' - radio dramas performed live in front of an audience with an orchestral score that does a lot of extra 'work' within the drama (eg providing atmosphere, 'describing' events that are not the subject of a specific monologue by the cast). Brand is also a composer and a historian of film music, so he's well-suited to the task and here he deliberately channels the discordant spirit of Hammer films and puts it to good use. Mark Gatiss stars as Sherlock Holmes (crossing another item off his professional bucket list, I dare say) with Sanjeev Bhaskar on form as Watson.
MYSTERIOUS MAGPIE is a channel devoted to ghost and horror stories on British radio, and to dark tales of every kind. I have another channel, MYSTICAL MAGPIE, which is all about stories of fantasy, mythology, and adventure: / @mysticalmagpie-wo5fn
