The first man said "God helped me get through the suffering and my belief is stronger". The second man said "I can not understand why god let such horrible things happened to his chosen people, in the end my belief in god is there is no god". As a Portuguese, that read and watched many stuff about the 1755 earthquake, he could have added: -After the tsunami water receding, fire from candles and lanterns lit up an out of control firestorm, for around 3 days, destroying even more than the quake and tsunami. -One of the less damaged building was the city prison, but a wall collapsing let loose many criminals, adding up to the looting, murdering and raping that followed the disaster. -The least affected area of the city was Alfama, a neighborhood full of taverns, drunk sailors and prostitutes, kinda like of a red light district of the day. (Nowadays the most charming place in the city, don't miss it if you visit Lisbon.) All extremely ungodly stuff, but even though we still one of the most catholic countries out there!!! 🤦‍♂

I worked in the Casino business for almost 10 years as a dealer and Pit Boss. There is no such thing as luck. The odds of winning are always the same. 50/50. You either will or you won't. That applies to each hand of blackjack, roll of the dice, or spin of the roulette wheel. Just like with the coin toss, sometimes you'll win several times in a row. But then you can lose several times in a row just as easily. Yes, there are some strategies that can improve your odds of winning, but they are not guaranteed. Here's the thing to remember. You can't win if you don't bet. This also applies to everything in life. You cannot move forward unless you take the chance.

Love this. He took the words right out my mouth. I love it when a survivor of a major incident like a plane crash is interviewed and they thank their god for their being saved, and their family thank their god for the grace it has shown them and how such a miracle could only be divine. Yet, that god clearly gave zero sh!ts about those who perished. We can’t interview those who may have prayed just as hard, or more so, and met their fate.

The Earthquake in Lisbon was the reason why Voltaire wrote Candide. "All is for the best in the best of all possible worlds," as Pangloss says, which was a nod to something that Leibniz had said, which obviously can`t be true. It`s a great book, an easy read, hilarious & I`m amazed it`s never been made into blockbuster movie. If you haven`t read it or any Voltaire, you`re missing out. Stick it on your bucket list.

Things with A.I have progressed significantly, but deGrasse Tyson's point still stands. Even generative A.I, the closest to all purpose intelligence, is very limited ultimately in what it can do. The reason for this is because all these robots/A.I need significant power so it's impossible to combine them all into one machine like a Cylon and will likely remain that way for a very long time, if not ever. It would require some massive energy breakthrough of a huge amount of energy in one small space.
@AJPemberton
@AJPemberton 10 күн бұрын
I'd add that a humanoid, generalised robot like a Cylon is also very unlikely to be common because we are not restricted in its form in the way humans have been restricted in our evolution. The only job I can think of for a robot that would benefit from looking like us is a sex/service robot, which does put a different slant on the Terminatior !

I don't quite agree with your energy or time scales. Hardware, firmware and software continue progressing (to date), minimizing energy needs and computing time, while improving potential and results. @AdamTondowsky
@AdamTondowsky 10 күн бұрын
@@VicVelez-tf8rd You're right, but to have an intelligent robot, you still need to combine several things: dexterity, senses and intelligence all into one body and all powered by some capability that isn't so heavy or big that that itself prevents the robot from operating. Maybe it's wishful thinking on my part, but unless we get to things like quantum computing that itself has been promoted by hype for many years, I suspect that diminishing returns will kick in before this highly intelligent robot is possible. Moore's law has been significantly slowing down.

I first became aware of Neil deGrasse Tyson long ago reading his column in Natural History magazine, the replacement of Steven Jay Gould as their resident philosopher-scientist (Well, actually they overlapped some), and was impressed with him then. I've seen quite a bit of him on KZbin, and though I'm not always in agreement, I'm still impressed. Interestingly, neither Gould nor Tyson spoke much of religion (Gould more often than Tyson, but still not often) and both called themselves, not atheists, but agnostics.

There are subtle but significant philosophical distinctions between classic philosophical definitions of atheist and agnostic or scientific agnostic. In truth, the scientific agnosticism is closer to the actual scientific method itself. No theory is absolute. Any theory may be updated or oven overturned pending compelling new scientific evidence.

If you don’t witness something in person, with none of your senses obscured, you are trusting the people who are presenting the evidence to you. Even if that is the case, if you are witnessing something beyond your personal knowledge and experience, like an mri image of a brain, you are still trusting the expert who is explaining to you what it is you are seeing. Truth is a difficult thing to assess.

I've heard him explain many times this very logical idea that if we, as a species can or could terraform Mars, then we can terraform Earth back to being Earth... but I've never heard him explain from a technological stance, how close or far he thinks we are from being able to terraform anything, that geo-engineering he explains so well, is it something attainable or not?, are we remotely close to having that capacity?. That should be interesting to know I think.
