We all know about Earth’s magnetic field, right? Well, Neil deGrasse Tyson and comic co-host Chuck Nice are here with another StarTalk Radio explainer to fill you in on the things you might not know about Earth’s magnetic field and magnetic poles.
Find out why Earth’s south magnetic pole is actually in the North. We discuss how Earth’s magnetic field is not aligned with Earth’s rotation axis. You’ll discover why when you use a compass to find North it’s most likely pointing to somewhere in northwest Canada.
You’ll learn about the differences between Earth’s magnetic poles vs. Earth’s geographic poles. Neil tells us how to actually find true North. Neil also explains why the magnetic poles of the Earth flip and have flipped many times. We discuss the “dynamo theory.” Lastly, we take a look at the Sun’s magnetic field and how that impacts sunspots. All that, plus, Neil tells us why there’s no understanding of magnetic fields without quantum physics.

@mvadu my friends ask for a “known” location of my keys... not necessarily the one in which I forgot them. I don’t think if I remember an arbitrary location for my keys,my friends will validate where they are now. (jokes aside I understand... computers have a large database of passwords and I can find one that validates my identity)

It did briefly. Also...in 1989 (March) a HUGE CME hit Earth and flipped the magnetic pole for almost 15 min. Canada had a large area blackout of all their power. The public was not informed due to possible panic but Astronomy magazine did a story on it. Wikipedia still has an article on the main event but doesn't mention the pole flip. Why hide science news from people?

@@MegaSkills9 Think about your source and the answer to your question will become clear. "Wiki" anything is user entered/altered data. Anyone capable of typing and following format guidelines can add, remove, or alter any wiki page in existence. It's not that anything was hidden, because nothing was. The science is there for anyone willing to look. The person who wrote the page either did not know, or did not deem it fitting for their write-up. Or the pole flip was mentioned, but poorly described. Basically, if it is on wiki anything, tread carefully. Further investigate what the page is saying. Because I assure all humans on Earth, wiki themselves care not about accurate information. It's all up to the users.

@shieldcracker
@shieldcracker 2 жыл бұрын
It could very well be. The truth is North and South poles are only references that are releative to each other. You could also say that all compasses point to the south pole and still be correct.
@robinhooper7702
@robinhooper7702 2 жыл бұрын
@@shieldcracker I must disagree. Yes the North and South poles are merely references but realize that natural products like magnetite/Loadstone orientates itself relative to the repulsion and attraction of Earths magnetic field. When you magnetize a metal object to fashion a compass you are orientating the molecular di-poles within the material, knowing that opposites attract and like poles repel. Our earths field is fixed it is our interpretation how this is translated. Case in point: I am a true believer in relative perspective/Einstein. Go ahead, if you have the means. Take a ball, any ball, I used a tennis ball. Using a felt marker I started at the top of the ball and drew a spiral going down clockwise until I reached the bottom of the ball. You will see that once you reach the equator you will now be moving your felt marker in a counterclockwise direction. So from the relative perspective of, let's say, flushing water and or your felt marker. Is it moving in the same direction?...I think yes. But from the point of view of the observer it is going the other way. And this is because the observer is on the other side/upside down. You can further confirm my observation by simply having a buddy sit across from you and hold a pencil on a horizonal plane relative to each others' point of view/eye site. The person across from you will se the pencil rotate in a clockwise direction and you will see the pencil rotate counter to the direction from the other observer. Thanks for you feed back. Have a great day.

North/South is just a label we apply to magnets, so who's to say that the "North" needle on a compass isn't really a "South" needle pointing to the earth's magnetic "North" Pole?
@ASJC27
@ASJC27 3 жыл бұрын
Because it's not an arbitrarily assigned label. Once there was an understanding of magnetism, it was defined based on the direction of the magnetic field. The magnetic north pole is the one that the magnetic field lines radiate out of, and the south pole is the one that the lines converge into. Once that definition was made, the north pole of a compass needle is only ever a magnetic north pole, and the earth's north pole is actually a magnetic south pole. It can't be opposite because that would require a reversed field.

It’s not like this is their full time job. They have a schedule and other responsibilities. NB I like that they’re spreading so much knowledge and especially the intention behind it, but NDT is director of a planetarium and has a lot of other endeavours, so it’s only logical...

Avesta Okay, you’re implying that you know their schedule and that the planetarium isn’t important, can you elaborate with evidence on that or do you want to keep spreading disinformation? Why don’t you contact them to help them? Because: “If you care about something you’ll make time for it”

Fun fact: In aviation, navigation charts are all plotted relative to true north (geographic north), however pilots determine their direction of travel using magnetic north because that's what the flight instruments measure inside the aircraft. So this has to be taken into account when pilots are planning flights. This angular difference between magnetic and true north is called "magnetic variation", and the degree of variation varies greatly depending on your position on the globe.

Some handful of years ago, say 2010-ish, I discovered one day by pure happenstance while just playing around aimlessly with google earth on a tablet that it would digitally go totally bonkers if to the pole regions (this digital phenomenon would occur @ either pole) were too near the dead center of the screen, and would effectively cause the tiny little digital compass icon to just spin out of control! I don’t think that app will do that anymore on any devices now, due to many app updates over the years. Just remembered that because of the last little fun factoid of info you, Neil deGrasse Tyson, mentioned at the end. 👍🏻 Another FANTASTIC episode‼️ KEEP UP THE GREAT WORK ‼️

Compasses are still widely used in today's smartphones and their main purpose is to determine a direction - knowing your position is not enough if you don't know which direction should you go. I think some navigation apps use it as well, for the very same reason. But anyway, just another amazing video of Neil summarizing scientific facts in a brilliant way. And the teacher-student format is great!
