Why does the universe exist? Neil deGrasse Tyson and comedian Chuck Nice answer fan questions about black holes, wormholes, the expansion of the universe and more! What are our options to solve the crisis in cosmology?
Can we answer the question: why does the universe exist? We discuss the meaning of life and get scientific and philosophical with it. Is it all just physics? What happens to matter when it reaches the singularity and not just the event horizon? Learn about Hawking radiation and spaghettification and the mysteries that still persist.
What’s the deal with the green comet? Find out about Oort cloud comets and where the comet gets its green. How big does an asteroid have to be to blow an atmosphere off a planet? What would happen if you pointed a laser pointer at a black hole? We explore gravitational redshift, time dilation, as well as how artificial intelligence will perceive the universe. Could we establish a wormhole for interstellar travel?
Discover the Big Rip and where the heat energy emitted from stars goes. Is the universe getting colder? We weigh the options for resolving the crisis in cosmology, how the JWST impacts it, and whether we are alone in the universe. Plus, find out time travel theories on how the Titanic really sank.
Thanks to our Patrons Fadi Hayek, Kemlyn Brazda, pascale manales, Jules Martin, and Scott Alderman for supporting us this week.

@Greg Lewis what are you referring to? I'm going to guess you might be right wing because I've noticed people who want to be in the right wing team seem to want to stop discussion of politics. Interesting that you've chosen to use ALL CAPITALS and attack a comment that is making a donation while neither the original comment or the reply are political. Back on track. These 2 are great. I really like the super smart Tyson and the funny everyman creating the student teacher situation and walking us through. Hope they do something on Einstein's theory of relativity, speed of light, how that affects so many things and so many ways. Objects approaching speed of light shrink in length, etc. How a photon light particle traveling from 10 billion years ago doesn't experience time. Weird and amazing.

I think the “why” is a more philosophical question than scientific. If Albert Einstein was working on a unifying theory of “everything,” it means that understanding the “why” sometimes May not be that simple. But I like how Neal expounded on why the question may just be an opening to the rabbit hole. 👍🏿

Thanks for this very, varied talk about the phenomenal universe we exist in at the moment. When you mentioned the the big rip, I was a bit stunned because few astrophysicists still talk about this subject. This is just my own thought about the subject, even if it happens very quickly, we will see it from far off, literally at the edge of the universe. All of those objects we see that are so far redshifted, that they seem to creep out of the universe from our line of observation, the literal measurement of the expansion of the universe at accelerating rates, would be the first place we see this "big Rip" occurring. Maybe we are already seeing it in a very slow motion, and we experience it over billions of years, watching the universes horizon slightly and slowly shrink.

Neil dodged the "Why" question. The question wasn't asking the small why's like why does something fall on the ground or why did was I t-boned. It was asking the Big Why, like why are there so many things beneficial to life on Earth that not only can't be explained by scientists but according to scientific calculations would not exist if conditions was one or two points different. The Big Why is the holy grail of questions, and Neil and every other scientist knows this.

I think the why he was asking is not “why did the pie fall” but “why do things experience a force pulling toward the center of another object that increases with size of the other object”? To me, that’s a “why” question that is a legitimate inquiry, whose answer would be beneficial.

An odd thought that is probably not a reflection of the real universe, but here is the question, in the form of an example: Imagine a bed sheet, and it's resting over a hole. There is clutter scattered around the top of the sheet. The bed sheet is being drawn into the hole. All the stuff on top of the bed can't get in the hole, so it clumps above the entrance. The sheet grows more stretched as it is pulled further into the hole. The objects on the sheet that are further from the hole, are spaced further apart. If in this example we were to assume that space was being acted upon by something in the way that the bed sheet was, would an observer think that objects were becoming more distant due to the space becoming more taunt? Would it explain an inexplicable amount of matter comprising a black-hole, if it was devouring space in that way?

I have a different interpretation to the opening "why" question, if one is enquiring about the mechanisms that cause a behaviour to happen. We can accurately reach a distant body because we can mathematically model it. The "why" question could be to establish what causes matter to attract gravitationally to other matter. That doesn't feel like a redundant question because we're not disputing that we can do it. We aren't disparaging or devaluing the maths and modelling, but instead we're seeking to understand the underlying reason why the modelling works. We're asking if we not only understand the maths but the reason, which can be equally scientific. If we can express the reason then we've gone beyond a mathematical proof, and have shown we have a deeper understanding.

“I think it's much more interesting to live not knowing than to have answers which might be wrong. I have approximate answers and possible beliefs and different degrees of uncertainty about different things, but I am not absolutely sure of anything and there are many things I don't know anything about, such as whether it means anything to ask why we're here. I don't have to know an answer. I don't feel frightened not knowing things, by being lost in a mysterious universe without any purpose, which is the way it really is as far as I can tell.” ― Richard P. Feynman

Theory of time dilatation is amazing. The other day I watched Interstellar movie, and I remember that occurrence of a guy orbiting the black hole was not going to experience the flow of time. Then, that theory made me though of what happens here on Earth and it's also mentioned by Neil and Chuck. So then, the peak of Mount Everest is the oldest part of this Earth?.

7:38 to 7:54 is something I've been trying to articulate to well meaning but perpetually unnecessarily inquisitive people my entire life. People who take their preconceived beliefs and assumptions, or they make something up in the middle of that conversation, and then want to debate the merits and considerations of something that isn't a real thing. It matters to them, so they wanna argue on terms like it matters to you too I'm with Neil and Chuck on this one, it has to stop and we have to move on to other things. Curiosity is the most important personality trait someone can possess, but there is a line where it's no longer curiosity and it becomes something closer to compulsiveness. At that point, I can't help you

Nice episode. Clear matter is a fascinating mystery. When listening today, I thought about how much of our own solar system is hidden. (at least per what info I seem to find available) We don't have a database of every single object in our solar system and their projected paths and until we do, I feel some hesitation. Not about theories or math or the search. Hesitation about what "clear matter light years away" means when matter is also non-detected right in our neighborhood. I'm still looking for info about the creation of the solar system itself. You mean, all the matter in our solar system was already here and/or came from a supernova that kick started our area? ALL the matter in our solar system was already here or brought here and it was in the right form to combine or early processes in the solar system kicked started fusion processes to make ALL the material? Can't wait to learn more. Wonderful topic matter. :)

few corrections if i may: 1. subatomic decay is expected in 10^40 years - far more than 200B yrs as mentioned 2. jwst was put 1M miles away because of that's where one of the important Lagrange point is. the distance doesn't have much to with the heat / light from sun

I thought the "official" time was kept here, and the satellite time signal corrections were the satellite checking its time synch so it can correctly determine its position (and in turn, your receiver triangulates those locations to find your location).
@wayando
@wayando Жыл бұрын
But the clocks keeping the time are fitted on the satellites themselves up there ... That would mean they keep the time up there and relay it to us. Even though we also have accurate clocks down here ... They keep us uniform, so we have the same time everywhere.

Bjorn asked; "We seem to focus for obvious reasons on the What and the How of the universe. The Why never seems to get much scientific attention, because it assumes i imagine, that their is a purpose which physics does not really need. With that in mind, is not the Why an important factor for human curiosity, and should we not then seek to not necessarily find a reason for the universe but encourage those who seek purpose and thus understanding?" So the answer with common sense 😅n my mind...is Absolutely Yes. Asking why is an important factor to human curiosity especially beyond a scientific format. We should seek deeper answers to life the universe and everything. And it does not have to be science that has all the answers because it doesnt. Neil basically answers a different question than what was asked, the question he wanted to answer not the one being put forward.

Wow, I really don't know why Neil assumed that the question "Why does the universe exist" refers to philosophy or religion and assumes the existence of a creator. This is a completely normal question that can be answered scientifically, or at least tried to. Hawking asked the question "why is there something rather than nothing?" He also gave a scientific answer without imposing his beliefs about life on others. This is also what I expected from this channel.

If we don't know what's collected and stored at the singularity, how can we be confident a black hole has kept an exact inventory manifest? We haven't gone to a black hole to measure it completely. If Hawking Radiation is true then it seems everything's crunched down (to just energy?) and can only reform as those matter/anti-matter pairs (whatever they are supposed to be).

Hi, so the youtube channel Kurzgesagt made a video explaining how there could have hypothetically been insanely big stars that had a black hole as their core in the early universe, I think that's what the question about black hole stars was referring to :)
@captain_crunk

RE: blackhole stars, I also saw something about that. If I'm remembering correctly, it is theorized that extremely large 3rd generation stars may actually have a blackhole at their core. The motivation behind the theory is that such blackhole stars are a possible explanation for how the largest blackholes got as big as we see today.
