Just Got back from Nashville TN. Many people saw fantastic shadow bands and a beautiful chromosphere. I was near the Grand Old Opry unfortunately, a nasty, dark cumulus cloud passed in front of the sun just before totality and I saw only faint glimpses of the corona. A shorter eclipse is actually better for seeing the spectacular red chromosphere. I met Joe on the Canberra in1973. I used my ham radio set to get weather information after poking a small antenna out my porthole and got it to the ship's meteorologist. The Canberra was a great ship and the trip was a great adventure.

I was in Sumter, South Carolina and despite predictions the weather was perfect. Clear sky for the entire event. I am very grateful to Sumter for being so welcoming to me and my family in allowing us to experience this spectacular event with them. I was super excited about seeing the eclipse and it still surpassed my expectations(I was an eclipse virgin until last Monday). I am already planning to travel to Kentucky in 2024 to see the next one!

I was one of those people who lived within 500 miles (actually, 530) of the eclipse and used Interstate 5 to get to Oregon from California. It took me 15 hours to drive home in 530 miles of bumper to bumper stop and go (sometimes stopped for minutes at a time) to get home. Rush hour traffic for 15 hours! IT WAS HORRIBLE. However, the eclipse was worth it!

We drove from Austin to Nashville 1,700 miles round trip. We camped at a local families backyard ( found them on Craigslist)the weather was clear and we were in the path of totality ....It was akin to a religious experience for us... The next big one April 8,2014 will be much closer for us and a minute plus longer(about 30 miles away) of course you must keep an eye on the weather!! Be ready to truck it to clear skies....

Bad Moon Arising -- Creedence Clearwater Revival It may be a very prophetic song considering our upcoming solar eclipse Aug 21 2017 Some whiz guys and math geeks say that unprecedented earthquakes and wild weather will proceed it and follow it due to the tremendous forces the moon and sun's alignment will put on the earth's crust. Just in the past 72 hours an increase in seismic activity has been noted. Listen carefully to the lyric's and tell me I'm wrong.

I was looking at the size / distance ratios of all of the gravitationally round satellites of our solar system (using the distance/radius figures from Wikipedia), and plotted out the ratios of sizes to distances and only 2 satellites had a ratio of proportionate size to proportionate distance that was less than one (meaning disfavorable to total eclipses): Earth's moon, and Iapetus (a satellite of saturn, which was really small and very far away from saturn). Earth's moon was pretty close to 1 though (about 0.97). Anything greater than 1 means possible total solar eclipse. This means every gravitationally round satellite in our solar system can potentially eclipse the sun with the exception of Iapetus. This is, of course, assuming the satellite lines up with the sun.

13:45 What about Jupiter?? While it would be hard to stand on the cloud tops, Jupiter has total eclipses almost constantly from the Galilean satellites. They can be seen from Earth. (the shadows on the clouds) What makes these eclipses so common is that Jupiter rotates and its major satellites orbit very close to the ecliptic, and, of course, Jupiter is really BIG..

gulgaffel the rarity is not the eclipse itself, it's the amount of people that are in the direct path of totality. It's rare that so many people will be able to see it so easily.
