One of the greatest singer-songwriters ever. A very distinctive voice, a hugely successful performer and writer of numerous classics. For me, one of the best things about Neil Diamond is his impeccable phrasing. You can actually understand every word he's singing. If you do another Neil Diamond song, try Brooklyn Roads, Stones, Holly Holy, Dry Your Eyes... You will be blown away!

This song is about a very dark time in Neil’s life. He badly wanted the role of Lenny Bruce in an upcoming bio-pic. He moved to LA, immersed himself into the controversial character of Lenny. He didn’t get the part, and was depressed. The line “not even the chair” refers to the mental health professional he was seeing. This is my favorite song by Neil….but all are great❤️

I saw Neil Diamond at Madison Square Garden. A friend asked me to go with her, and I went because she had nobody else to go with. I'll tell you, I wasn't into Neil's music. I was into a whole different genre of music. WELL! His voice blew me away. I never heard anyone so perfect in concert before! It taught me to be open-minded about different types of music. Anyway, Jayy, try "Sweet Caroline" next, its fun, people sing along.

In a nut shell its about depression, along with all the other unfortunate side effects. Missing home and not being able to settle in a new place, and trying to go home and find everything is completely different and no longer feels like home anymore. Having everything that goes with fame and fortune, but not having the rudimentary basics of life and feeling alone and isolated from everyone around you. Coming home that you worked so damn hard to achieve, but it is cold and empty despite its heavy furnishings. The high voltage electric feeling of being up on stage, but cold loneliness at home once on his own. He seeks help, but even the man in the chair doesn't listen and is indifferent.

Your insight is spot on. His father was a Rabbi and wanted him to study to become a Cantor in the synagogue. He went on to be a main force in the early days of rock.

That’s actually the plot of “The Jazz Singer”…a movie Neil Diamond made in 1980. It’s not autobiographical as Neil’s father was not a rabbi nor did Neil ever study to be a Cantor

Absolutely. So well said. Been a fan for 5 decades. I Am I Said is not only my favorite song of his, but if I had to pick one song period as my favorite of all time…that’d be it. And I know, there are many wonderful songs in this world, by legends. But, if hard pressed to pick only one, this one hit me so deep when it first came out, and stayed with me, so I’d have to give it to Neil. His music was the soundtrack to my life. You’re right, he is often overlooked. Every view his induction to the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame, (finally?!)….classic, an unusually “lit” and irreverent, amusing acceptance speech from Neil, that they so deserved.

@Linda Graveling How wonderful that must have been for her, and for you too of course! My friend is named Neil Diamond, yes...seriously. It wasn't intentional because he was actually born a few years before Cracklin' Rose came out but after his first hit came out in the 60s...but that wasn't a solo. While she was alive it STILL didn't stop his mom from telling people that. When people start to brag about their sons that didn't know her well at functions. She'd be like listen I know we just met and I don't mean to be a brag about my son but just you aware...MY son is Neil Diamond! Then she's excuse herself and walk away from them. Of course they would ask the hostess or others who is that woman who just took off? And they say OH that's Mrs. Diamond. THAT was her way of having the one upmanship with the mothers and getting the final word when she wanted to give him a little dig. My friend was like Ma if we ever wanted these people somewhere and we're together don't you think they're going to be a little disappointed when they actually meet me? I look nothing like the guy! I'm a good 1/2 foot shorter, and I can't sing worth a shit....the ONLY thing is we're both born in Brooklyn. She was like quit being such a warrior, I gave you a nice name. His mother gave him a nice name too. People never going to see again don't know the difference and they think you're famous. I'm sure if his mother was being annoyed at a cocktail party should do the same thing for me. I'm his long time friend from high school out here on Long Island. That's where they moved to & we all used to think it was hysterical! LOL!!! 😂

This song reminds me of a dusty and very dark cellar. The foundation walls built with river stones. It is old house. The mortar crumbles everywhere. Somewhere there in the dark against the far wall is an old porcelain wood stove. On it are the keys to these doors and a light switch.

When I was a teenager, I asked my mother if I could watch the Neil Diamond concert being aired on TV. She wasn't thrilled but said that I could. After about 15 minutes she came into the room and said, "Who's that?" I said "that's Neil Diamond". She sat down mesmerized and finally said "He's so gorgeous! You know, that man could put his shoes under my bed anytime!" I almost fell off the couch because the only actor I knew her to have a crush on was Robert Stack. But she loved Neil. It was hilarious.
