I'm saying this as someone who in the past have read (and enjoyed) a lot of Neil Gaiman's work (Sandman, American Gods, The ocean at the and of the lane etc.) but his creepy (very creepy) nature has been one of the biggest open secrets in the literary world for years. It is very similar to the Harvey Weinstein situation where everyone in the business knew about him and what he did but just decided to look the other way since he was so famous and made so much money for his publishers. The "rumors" about him stalking conventions and writer's symposiums looking for young, impressionable and submissive female fans have been around for a long time. Once these stories became more and more persistent I found myself not being able to enjoy his work anymore. It was the old "no smoke without fire"-thing, I guess, and it just felt weird reading his work. You could never shake the feeling "Is this just imagination or is it based on something... more". The fact that he over these last 10-15 years have become more and more outspoken about feminism and LBTQ-rights also felt weird. I mean, there is nothing wrong supporting these causes per se (and Neil has always been very supportive of these causes) but the fact that he really ramped this narrative up as the rumors about his other side started to become more prominent just gave the impression that he was trying to cover something up. In hindsight, you have to wonder if he ever cared about these causes to begin with (even as a young man) or if he just saw these women as very easy to manipulate. If he pretended to be a feminist he could integrate himself into "their circle" and score some emotional points. It also made it so that a lot of his fans - once he got famous - dismissed these rumors for him, thinking it impossible that such a famous "feminist" would abuse his power that way.
@thehacker401213 күн бұрын

@@thehacker4012 that's not what he said. You really have no business acting so arrogant if you can't even quote someone accurately. I still think to this day that the Dr. Destiny diner chapter in Sandman is one of the single most depraved and interesting pieces of comicbook literature I've ever read (save for maybe Ennis). She eventually left me, and I started to despise every little thing she loved, including Gaimen (petty, I know). I didn't watch dead boy detectives club, didn't read anymore sandman or hellraiser comics, I was done. Then I heard about all this and a small part inside me cheered, NOT because any of this has happened to anyone, but because I'm sure my ex was reeling from this. All that being said, what is being depicted in these descriptions of his assault on that woman, seems to be so comically despicable, that it's kinda difficult to believe. Don't get me wrong, shit like this DOES happen to people and to say it's terrible would be an understatement. Instead of hoping his works get thrown into some vault to never see the light of day, we need to find some way of living with his library of works; because they’re not going anywhere. Because good art can come from shitty people.

I do admit, as someone whose mental landscape and interest in fantasy writing as a young adult was profoundly shaped by his works - no, I don't want or expect every artist I like to be wholesome,much less angelic,but I do expect a modicum of dignity and self-respect that justify why I think their ideas are important enough for me to give them the time of the day, when there are so many books out there I won't ever have time to read. He could have been a great many things, even a criminal, perhaps (meaning, not the kind of criminal he's being accused as) and I'd still want to read him. But I can't suffer knowing how pathetic and ridiculous he is, even if he's not legally liable. His past works, I'll just have to reconcile myself with loving them nevertheless.

I'm not really surprised, but he's never given me the impression of being that sort of person. Though who we are thirty years ago isn't the same as we are now. Never put people on a pedestal, and I try to separate the art from the artist. I tend not to care too much about their actions as a person because I don't exactly believe people are fundamentally good or bad. We simply "are" at our baseline. We're animals with higher functioning minds, and the mind must be trained, used, and disciplined, lest the lesser animal mind take over. And if the allegations are true, like so many people, he has lost that battle. Sandman will always be my favorite comic book, and I loved Coraline. If it's true, I hope the people he's hurt find help and peace, and I hope he learns and grows as a person. If not, then it's just the same old story. People are trying to besmirch the name of a good man for profit.

I know about the "Halo Effect", I love Nietzsche's quote saying, "Many times behind a great artist hides a mediocre man and behind a mediocre artist a great man" and I'm used to accept many people I admire for WHAT THEY DO are just shitty people. There are plenty of them But in this case it's hard for me to believe it. The scale of the accusations are just so big and the scale of the cover up so wide that is hard to believe that a WRITER, that started as a COMIC BOOK writer, and, as far as I know, never was in any executive position ever, as rich as he is, had the influence to cover it up for so long. He was writing for DC when those things happened, apparently. That's not like a singer, a rapper, an actor, a Hollywood director or something. I don't know.

Sorry to tell you this, but "innocent until proven guilty" hasn't been a thing since the Left ignored it, when the people on the Right, Center, and even their own friends and family were hit with allegations. They didn't gave those people any leeway or grace to prove their innocence when the accusations were piling up. They were warned that if they keep doing this, they'd get the same treatment when it was their turn on the hot seat. Instead of heeding this warning, they doubled down with the "BELIEVE ALL VICTIMS!" narrative. And even when the accused were proven innocent; they tripled down by perpetuating the lies and continue their harassment, instead of acknowledging their mistake and apologizing. And knowing Neil's politics, he most likely cheered on from the corner when it was the people he disliked were being hounded and accused. I do agree that we should wait for solid evidence to surface. And that's the only thing that should matter. But I'm not gonna play dumb why Neil is getting this treatment or why the public has this reaction.
