This is why I love Neil. Holy shit. This is precisely what I've always told my students: "There are many problems in the world, and YOU get to solve them". And then they would ask me "But who are we to solve such problems?" And I would answer: "SOMEBODY has to solve them. Why not you?"

i am honestly crying right now neil gaiman is one of my idols, and one of the greatest writers i have ever had the pleasure of reading the work of. he's smart, and he's funny, and the things he says are brilliant. i grew up listening to this man's voice on tape cassettes rented from the library, hoping and praying that one day i would be as great a person as him. he's affected my life so greatly, and hearing something so uplifting and wonderful in /his voice/ is just incredible.

If you try then there is a chance you may succeed and a chance that you may fail. There is only certainty if you don't try. If you don't try, then it is certain that will not succeed and it is certain that you will fail. So, if you choose not to try something for fear of failure, then you have already failed.

I'm so glad the career advice this girl received didn't stop at the short-sighted, "Yeah, we have enough artists. We don't need you" discouragement. What jerk would say that to a kid?

Yeah that may be true but time is a factor, you cannot reverse it back when you realize that you use your energy & time for nothing...In life what you give is what you get. You have to give a good amount of time to achieve on something.. And sometimes you must try harder..if you believe you can do, sure you can try. Its a choice.

Try Coraline, or Stardust. But really, though, all his works are beautiful. Each and every one is just so unique and intriguing that it's almost impossible not to enjoy them. Try them all, I say.

I would have liked to have heard deGrasse Tyson's answer to the same question, as he repeated (and rightly) has said there is a deficit in STEM (science, technology, engineering, maths) degrees in the US right now and has lamented the vast numbers of students coming out of college with media-related degrees. As such, I think there is a much larger discussion to be had and that both the initial "enough directors" comment and Gaiman's advice can be situationally both positive and negative.

Almost as sad as people giving up on their childhood dream or career because their parents were against it or because someone said 'that can't be done'. Because the people who tell you 'no' or 'you can't do that' are the people who never tried.

@minakichan Believing in a dream is one thing- but to live the dream you also need to believe in action. If you want to chase the dream, chase it! All those amazing artists? They started out as nobodies- natural talent or no: they built upon what little skill they had by creating as much as they could. And it doesn't hurt to share with like-minded friends. :)

The audience laugh when someone from the panel (not sure it's Neil) says "So we can kill them." (Thanks @elainebelyeu for that information)
@BarriesChannel
@BarriesChannel 12 жыл бұрын
In response to 'Who told you that?" she says 'Errr, this, er...' and doesn't finish. She seemed nervous to name the person - she might have been going to say; 'this person' (as in 'just some person') or 'this teacher' or something along those lines.
@hedende
@hedende 11 жыл бұрын
Nice words..but i think she has concerned about making a living from it.. And the fail issue and risks are strong. Everyone can not be successful.. If a person wants to be an artist, at least he/she has to discover what his/hers capability (or creativity)..

Someone from the panel makes a quick comment that you can't really hear clearly, which is a shame because that comment is what the audience are laughing at.
