When you have brand new releases for Kindle that are more expensive than a hardback, you know there's a problem. The fact is at one time piracy was dropping as e-books became more accessible and not insanely priced. But year upon year the prices have started increasing to crazy levels. Plus, you only need ONE version of an e-book and you're selling that "licence" again and again. If they want to pull that book and you've paid £15 $15 for it, you won't get a refund. @BenjaminAeveryn5 күн бұрын
Just a 2 cents on blurbs from an indie author -- I can't speak to their efficacy on book covers/selling from the shelf, but I can attest from running ads that they are super powerful when compared with other forms of copy. Even without attribution, a simple blurb of the "This is an amazing book!" type does result in more clicks. It creates a kind of implicit social proof with the benefit of being able to hand-select precisely which quotes you use. Human brains are weird, but it really does work.
@shelbyr145 күн бұрын
@BenjaminAeveryn "implicit social proof" is definitely a factor. If I find an author I like blurbed a book, and it sounds similar to their style, I'm going to assume that I may like it. They do need to actually describe the book instead of just 2 or 3 words. That doesn't really help give the feel of the book. Is this book going to upset me? Is it uplifting? Is it disturbing? What is it? I do find pages of reviews on the inside more helpful with making my choice because they give actual thoughts on the tone. Author blurbs can be done really well, but 2 or 3 words is not enough. Reviews give more detail.

The issue with piracy surging because of a difficult streaming landscape is exactly what I'm afraid of as tech companies start getting more into e-books and the possibility of exclusive titles for some devices. It's honestly feeling like we're going backwards as someone living in Australia - piracy of TV shows was huuuuge here before streaming picked up because it was the only way to actually watch shows (either at all or in a timely manner). A lot of people genuinely would've paid to get hold of things if it was at all possible, but it wasn't. It feels like we're heading right back to that time, but globally.
@blunderswish71215 күн бұрын
Companies are removing media, relying on cumbersome drm practices, consistently increasing their prices, and throwing licenses out to some of the most random places. Oh and the plethora of media arbitrarily inaccessible in certain locations. So we have at least 2 instance where piracy would actually be legal due to inaccessibility to the product in the market. The cumbersome DRM pushes people that have bought it to get the non-drm version; and convince others not to buy it because access to it is so restrictive on the customer. Prices are increasing, while purchasing power isn't.

It's never going to stop the market from trying to have both their exclusivity hell-scape AND zero pirating, because as long as legislative remedies exist to prop up these content fiefdoms, you better believe the platform holders will avail themselves of them. Every time one of these things pops up I am reminded of a vintage scifi series which had a species the humans called "land prawns". Title is Little Fuzzy by H. Beam Piper if you are interested.

Same, I never really paid attention to blurbs anyways. I always just assume that they're getting their friends weren't going to say anything bad to do them, it's never squared me to read a book

I don't think Daniel understands how hot a take his DMC opinion was.

I don't think anyone here does. Daniel and his audience aren't gamers, which is fine, of course, but when they do venture to play a game, it's usually something like The Last of us or Red Dead 2, games that could have easily been movies/TV shows. Devil May Cry is a _game,_ and apparently, that's a "dated" thing to be, according to Daniel.

I loved that he thought to drop the hard g sound for gumiho in an attempt to pronounce it accurately, when it wasn’t necessary 😂😂 14:26

Piracy is a symptom and not the actual "problem", and this bill is honestly not going to do much at all. The people that outright don't want to pay for it still won't, and the people this is aimed at that are aware they're pirating will still have to make the same choice as before, which is usually: Would I rather pay to watch this, or not watch it at all? Also, I don't think outperforming Disney+ is too difficult in my opinion. Everyone I know who has a recurring sub to Disney+ has young children, everyone else buys a month here and there to catch up on releases. There just isn't enough regular content to warrant a Disney sub.

I've been having a rough week, and this ep of Fantasy News has given me lots of laughs. I also just feel joy watching you fan over incredible cover art. Thank you so much for doing this and making my day feel better. 😊

I don't like piracy but when it comes to anime there often is a problem that you can't find it legally. At least here in sweden

4:05 lol no joke, I picked up the farseer trilogy because of the blurb on the front by George RR Martin. That’s why I like them but if people want to get rid of them, I’ll survive

I've definitely been partially influenced by a blurb before, and even when I'm not I still like to skim them.

I don’t think I’ve ever actually read a book blurb, or if I have, it was so unimportant of a factor in deciding to get a book or not. 03:20

Ya see.... This has really confused me. I always thought book blurbs were the little summaries on the back not the author endorsements elsewhere. .. I thought those were called endorsements, lol. Are y'all SURE that is how you use that word?

I used to know an author who was high-enough profile to get asked for blurbs, and indeed, he didn’t even read the books, he just sent back some marketing fluff. That said, I literally started reading Strangers in Paradise because of Neil Gaiman's blurb on the first pocket book 😭😭😭

The only time I pay attention to blurbs is when an author I do not respect at all (ex: colleen hoover) has blurbed a book I'm interested in. Then, I am not longer interested in that book.
@justanotherpiccplayer35115 күн бұрын
So stupid question, I thought the blurb was the bit on the back of the book that told you what the books about? Not quotes from authors?

I apologize if someone has already said it because there’s already a lot of comments but Del Toro’s Frankenstein isn’t an adaptation of the novel unfortunately. It’s a sequel to the original story.

I hate reading blurbs on covers, but even more particularly, on Kobo when it recommends a book to you and you click on the description and all you see is an author’s generic blurb and not the actual description of the novel, it makes me absolutely crazy.
