I have immense respect for NPH, as I do Larry Kurt, John Barrowman, Raul Esparza ( I saw his performance live) however, all I can think of was Dean Jones rendition as captured in the Pennebaker/Hegedus documentary of the Original Cast Recording of Company. It was the definitive rendition. Dean’s singing was magical. It was as timeless as Sondheim’s genius. Pure perfection.
@billcook4768 Жыл бұрын
Dean was famously going through a brutal divorce at the time, which might have given him that extra edge over a happily married NPH.

I don't prefer Dean's version, and... it's hard to describe why because I don't know the words for it, but the way he says some of the words, especially those with "L"s in them, are very "tonguey". He says them like his tongue is heavy in his mouth.

I think it would be easy to interpret this scene as a man mocking marriage by asking what you get, but from this performance at least what I interpret is a man who’s genuinely asking. He doesn’t understand why people are so pro marriage, but he wants to. So he tries to ask without asking through the guise of mockery. And over the course of the song, he slowly begins to finally understand. Idk if that makes sense or if others agree but that’s my take on this performance. Absolutely amazing subtle acting from NPH

all the youngsters from Groff to Rannells should take note this is what a moment before a song is (neither G nor R comprehend this important factor in a song), what being in the individual moments as well as conveying and never losing the entire arc of the songs meaning, acting the song with your vocal instrument totally connected to give the maximum performance you are capable of is what Neil Patrick Harris did. He rode a magnificent roller coaster of a song and drew you into his world and told you about his problem of what or not Being Alive and all that it encompasses means to him at that point in the play. I have watch so many substandard versions tonight from Groff to Rannells, that when I watched Neil, he gave me hope (that their are Broadway professionals today who are very competent and amazingly talented) allowed me to escape and partake in the world he created for his character through the script and song.
