One man, making such rich sound with so few drums! Malignant Narcissism is easily my favorite jam from Snakes & Arrows. The first time I heard it, I looked up the title of the song and just howled in laughter! Then, when I saw the behind the scenes vignette of RUSH actually recording the track for the album, I was mesmerized. Just as Neil explained, he _thought_ he was done recording his drum tracks and came back to a separate studio where Geddy and producer Nick Raskulinecz of Foo Fighters fame were recording vocals. It was only then that Geddy and Nick explained they wanted to record one more instrumental track for the album. Geddy showed Neil his shiny new Fender Fretless Bass reissue, which he intended to play during the last track. Neil’s drum set had already been broken down and removed from the studio and they were discussing what do about drums. Neil recognized how challenging a fretless bass can be to play and decided to challenge himself: Neil scraped together a 4-piece drum set with just a few cymbals to record MN. Once Alex arrived after rehearsing the guitar parts upstairs for less than a day, they decided to record MN as a trio, live in the studio. The results are stunning! Even though I’ve been listening to RUSH since the late 70’s, I’d never seen or heard Neil Peart play such a basic drum kit?! You’d never guess it’s such a simple drum kit by the depth of the sound of the drums on this track. Neil also includes his trademark high-hat barks: crisp, fast and loud! Geddy’s bass track is just as phenomenal as the drums. Finally, Alex shares his riffs, sounding as good as he ever has. RUSH simply wouldn’t be RUSH w/o Alex’s thick heavy chops that are generous, but never overdone. Only the best make it appear so easy. It’s one of those RUSH tracks that reminds folks we’re listening to not one, not two, but three *virtuosos* who represent perhaps the very best of their genre. It still amazes me that these 3 incredibly talented (and remarkably down-to-earth) people not only found one another, but joined together to make incredible music for over 4 decades! Even though we’ve listened to RUSH for so long, the music never gets old. I count myself among the very lucky, as I’ve enjoyed RUSH’s music throughout my entire life. I can remember which songs came out when I was a kid, then a young adult in the Army and finally as a middle-aged business professional who often surprises his peers by blaring out some RUSH tunes during social events. To me, this song, an instrumental that lasts under 3 mins, represents all the skill, precision and beauty I’ve enjoyed from RUSH since I was a child.

You all " love" Neil Peart that you see on video everyday, yet you wont notice the people in real life you see everyday, none of them means anything to you, because they are not beneficial to you. The worst thing about Rush are their fans, the blind followers.

Neil Peart always looks and sounds like he just started playing. Something about those stiff arms and hands really brings it home to me. There is really no joy, or playfulness in his playing. There are no interesting rhythmic things happening, no interesting fills to spice things up, it just sounds like putting on a sequencer on 8 or 16th notes,and hitting play. People seem to confuse his well-mannered introvertism with quality playing, which is not the case.
