Rest In Peace Neil. The world has lost a great musical and intellectual giant in 2020. Both of these kits are works of art and belong in museums. I don’t get some of the comments, these DW kits sound amazing. Neil became a more efficient, solid drummer in his later career and did away with the epic drum rolls and other flashiness. Maybe that’s why people romanticize drum kits of the past. At his level, Neil’s kits were always the best, no matter which company made them.

The drum tech was playing it during the intermission of the show I attended, and when he was hitting the toms they were so beautiful to hear, and were DEAD ON in tune with the music playing over the PA at the time (Radiohead? In "Anatomy of a Drum Solo" Neil talks about his early days in high school when he was in his first band called "Mumblin Somthin". The band was playing at the local YMCA, when during his drum solo his snare and high hat went sliding across the floor. "It was a disaster". He said he found some rope and tied the kit all together and convinced his band mates to let him try it again. He got it right the 2nd time. I believe this influenced him to bolt all the hardware to the riser.

The last kit that I truly loved the sound of was Neil's double-bass Ludwig Super Classics (they went from white with pink sparkles to a deep plum color). His BEST sounding kit was the brown Tama Superstars (6-ply birch) used on Moving Pictures and Permanent Waves. His DW kits have all sounded terrible to my ears.

agreed on the "fire" kit, although his overall sound from "windows" to "presto" was my favourite sound production wise. i liked the concert toms from the brown kit, but not the overall drum mix on those two albums :-( regardless, it didn't reflect on the music, lol. i too was never a fan of the dw's. still. got to see them on their final night at the LA forum a couple of years ago and EVERYTHING sounded magical. very "lump in throat" show......

I don't care what anyone says, the DW retro kit sounded awful. How anyone with ears can say otherwise is beyond me. I understand that he (Peart) was more than likely prevented by contract to use anything but DW's, but one need only compare the sound of them to the original Slingerland's used on All the World's a Stage. I've always said that DW's are just fine for some applications but for older Rush tunes, they just don't have the "throatiness" or character for those classic songs.
@funkster0078 жыл бұрын

mont de wally de honk I, like you, don't really care for DW's. When they first came on the scene, they made it their goal to garner as many high profile endorsements as possible and it has paid off in spades. That doesn't make them sound any better, though. How could this guy STILL not know how to pronounce Neil’s last name after FORTY years? It’s pronounced “pEAR t”... Good grief. And what’s with the rack toms being so spaced apart on the black kit? Very strange...

I don't understand how you get "Pert" from "Peart." It really isn't difficult at all.

Why does the material(s) of the whole drum set need to be such high quality if they're not going to be played???

Way back in the old days..we didn't know exactly which pronunciation was correct. But today there is no reasonable excuse for not getting it correct especially since we have heard from Neil himself and the band as to how it should be pronounced. It's disrespectful.

All the DW bashing is strange to me. Every Rush concert attended, when they were "soundchecking" and during the solo, the toms had the most resonance I ever heard. Tama are nice but my 1972 Rogers (maple) sounded better than my old Tama kit
